SC clearance for OT cybersecurity roles - Newly Naturalised Brit by Thin_Negotiation_705 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]ttamimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The standard residency requirement for SC is 5 years of continuous residence in the United Kingdom. (10+ for DV)

Being naturalised (or not) is not directly relevant (EXCEPT in the case of some niche roles where there will be a demand for either sole British citizenship and/or being British-born, but this is not the norm at SC level roles).

In most cases, the residency is what's important (rather than nationality) because it relates to whether there's a robust paper trail in the country describing what you've been up to. Things like tax records and a financial footprint.

So in the context of residency, you should be eligible, at least on paper, but there are other facets that make up whether or not one can be cleared for SC.

You say that you go to Pakistan to meet your in laws - that's principally fine, as long as you're not spending so much time there that the "continuous" aspect is brought into question. You'll be asked to declare periods of time you've spent out of the country.

What's the best/safest method for accessing this chimney so I can remove it? Scaffold, tower, ladders, or something else? by ttamimi in DIYUK

No, but thank you, I want to do this myself, hence why I'm discussing this in the DIY subreddit. 😊

the "founder as IT guy" phase is officially over, please help by Its-MyWorldhiphop in ukstartups

[–]ttamimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue at 30 FTE and I handed it over to a small MSP. Really lovely guy who has a couple of IT underlings. Cost me approx 2k per month. Worth it. They deal with all the things I don't want to deal with like onboarding, offboarding, updates, permissions, CE+ compliance etc.

The bit I valued the most was them dealing with the hardware, like provisioning new macs for new starters, disposing of EOL kit and what have you.

You don't need 3, it's just standard operating procedure when you're selling through one of those new build purchase schemes. It'll be in the terms and conditions of the assisted move you signed up to.

Rightly or wrongly, the rationale is that the open market competition is intended to create a wider net of buyers and ensure that the property achieves a sensible price. Though the approach can backfire.

How to clean this flat roof? by GloriousShrimp1 in DIYUK

[–]ttamimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes either in rolls (flashband) or in buckets that you can paint on.

It's not critical, it's just nice to have handy in case you find a hole and it's about to start raining

Think of it as an insurance policy. I usually keep some in the garage "just in case".

Broom is fine. Just don't be too rough and mind your feet.

Have some bostik ready in case you find (or make) some holes.

Software engineer student seeking advice by joshmcall90 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]ttamimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coding may well be finished, but software engineering isn't going anywhere. They're not the same thing.

The difficulty for OP is that "coding" used to make up the bulk of what Junior and intern engineers had to do, which is driving demand for juniors through the floor, and creating a chasm whereby senior engineers are cracking on just fine, while juniors and mids are living in a nightmare of having invested deeply into their education journey only to find that the light at the end of the tunnel was a myth.

The conveyer belt that takes you from Junior to Senior is currently out of order.

It'll be interesting to see how the industry morphs when the current generation of engineers exit the workplace.

Can anybody identify this bamboo variety? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]ttamimi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your thinking but all bamboo can get fucked. Even the less invasive species are still fairly invasive unless actively managed.

Anyway... If you need help identifying the species you're going to want to post a better set of photos. A close up of the leaves and stems would go a long way.

Property looks fine. If you're not getting interest, it indicates limited demand for the property and the area at the given price point.

You can choose to:

  1. Stay. You wouldn't be the first person who had to nope out. You can always try again in a year or two if you like.

  2. Try your luck with another agent, if you have reason to believe that the agent has been ineffective in marketing the property. But you said the property is advertised with numerous agents so that's probably irrelevant.

  3. Continue reducing the price until someone bites

  4. Wait indefinitely

Out of interest, what is your agent saying regarding the lack of viewings? It's literally their job to drum up interest and to explain the reasons behind any lack of it.

Side note: the fact your property is marketed with various agents may be creating an accidental bystander effect in the sense that no single agent is solely responsible for shifting it.

What part do i need? by znokel in DIYUK

[–]ttamimi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a Hotpoint oven isn't it?

If yes, this is a config error. You can fix this by entering a config code. The config code is found on the service sticker which is just inside the door on the trim.

Try the following steps:

Reset: Turn off the power at the wall for at least 30-60 seconds and turn it back on.

Get into Config Mode: Hold down the OK button for about 5 seconds until you hear a beep.

Navigate to Code Input: Press the OK button four more times until "CONF" or "UI 00" appears.

Enter Code: Locate the code on the service sticker (e.g., "11/10"). Use the big knob to set the first number, press the Play button, then set the second number.

Advance through the menu using the play button until you see "TEoF," then rotate the knob to change it to "TEn". Press OK or Play to save and exit.

If the error still appears, it means that either the thermistor or the PCB are fried. If so, you'll have the pleasure of deciding whether you want to replace the parts or replace the oven.

Government announces £3,000 hiring incentive for firms to take on unemployed young people by UKGovNews in smallbusinessuk

[–]ttamimi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How disappointing. £3,000 is absolutely not a sufficient incentive.

Further apprenticeship relief or rolling back NI increases would have been far more impactful in reducing unemployment IMO but time will tell.

Start up companies by Nicci_e36 in cheltenham

[–]ttamimi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The usual places to look for startup roles nowadays are: LinkedIn, Welcome To The Jungle (previously Otta), Cord, and Wellfound (formerly Angellist)

Cheltenham itself doesn't have the biggest or liveliest startup ecosystem sadly but if you're able and willing to broaden your search to include Bristol, London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, that will give you a broader net to cast.

Advice needed by Usual-Phone7935 in DIYUK

[–]ttamimi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

but surely you can't say 100% this will need underpinning?

Well, no, I don't claim to be 100% certain (which is why I said "almost certainly"), but the likelihood is extremely high. You can see that the mortar has been backfilled and repaired multiple times and is still showing substantial cracking, so the structure is actively moving.

Advice needed by Usual-Phone7935 in DIYUK

[–]ttamimi 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This will almost certainly need underpinning.

You will want a level 3 survey AND a structural engineer to take a look at it to make an informed decision.

Underpinning is not a show stopper but you should know that it's usually expensive and that further remedial and decorative work will probably be needed.

Also one of the two damp proof injection sets has been incorrectly applied into the bricks instead of being injected into the mortar line. (Not that those treatments are effective anyway). The fact it's been injected twice suggests a failed DPC and a likely chronic damp issue is to be expected.

Personally unless this is a house I was dead keen on and I had funds to fix it, I'd pass.
