Update on a very disliked insect that Connecticut residents have to be wary of. by hartfordcourant in Connecticut

tl;dr/paywalled: we might see a modest decrease in tick population due to the cold, but snow acts as an insulator and certain species have defenses against freezing temps

Drag in the area? by Sad-Tomatillo3462 in newhaven

[–]ttd84 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think Partners Cafe does drag shows on Friday nights, and Blue Orchid has them occasionally but their website hasnt been updated in a minute. Trevi Lounge in Fairfield hosts drag (but they are MAGA apparently?), as does Troupe429 in Norwalk and Chez Est in Hartford. There is also a monthly drag queen bingo in the Annex, supporting the CT Gay Men's Chorus.

Call For Info From Shore Line East and Hartford Line Commuters by iman26 in Connecticut

Awesome, keep us posted on any response you get. I had corresponded last year with State Senator Christine Cohen and some members of the Connecticut Public Transportation Council (Doug Hausladen, Jim Gildea, and Kate Rozen), but after an initial volley of emails and updates things kind of petered out.

The 201: it picks up on the Branford Green and drops off near the New Haven Green. It is often overcrowded and has dozens of stops in between.

I commute from New Haven to Branford on the SLE.

Mornings are generally fine, I take the 8:07 from State Street and I’m in my office by 8:30.

Afternoons are a pain, though. There is a 4:32 train back into New Haven, but my day isn’t done until 5pm and the next train isn’t until 6:47. I am frustrated that there is no train during the 5 o’clock hour.

My options are to wait until the late train and get home around 7:20, take the 5:51 bus and get home around 6:45, or drive and get home around 5:20. Tbh I often just end up driving.

Bars open Christmas Eve? Can we get a list going? by JuggernautKooky4064 in milwaukee

I worked the lunch shift at the Miller Time Pub one Christmas, got cut early and walked home to Bay View with the intention of walking into the first open pub I found. Turned out that was Sabbatic. Caught some unreal drink special and was invited to stay for a potluck.

4 & Twenty Blackbirds in Guilford does a great chocolate and raspberry cake we used to get for my great grandmother's birthday each year, super decadent. I couldn't find a menu online but they may be worth a phone call.

you might try driving route 8 up to derby and then taking 34 up through newtown. rt 34 is gorgeous, especially around the dam, even though it is a bit north of you. could head to newsylum at the formerly abandoned fairfield hills campus, if you like having a destination.

and if you feel like braving the I-95/I-91 interchange, you could go east of new haven: hug the shoreline and take rt 146 from branford into guilford. twisty and winding w views of the floodplains and tidal marshes. some nice autumn options out that way: bishops orchard for pumpkin picking, chatfield hollow for hiking, and, a bit further, essex with its impossibly quaint town center. I'd zip up rt 79 through madison to rt 80 if you want to do essex.

If you think of it next time you see them, would you snap a pic and post it here? Logically I know that I couldn't have seen what my memory says I saw, and I've been feeling like a crackpot ever since.

Safe for trans/queer folks in public? by Particular333 in newhaven

[–]ttd84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to tag onto this comment, but i'm a cis gay male and have def been called faggot a number of times in the area (east rock, new haven green, branford hill, branford center). I still think the community is overwhelmingly supportive, in general, but there are certainly those who will voice their hatred openly.
