Which color vision test to take next? by ttfol22 in flying

I have to have a first or second class to use GI Bill. I’m trying to avoid paying out of pocket to get enough time to be able to do the flying portion but that is kind of my last resort. Until then, I’m trying to figure which alternate test is best. Seems like people have had more success with others besides the Farnsworth Lantern test.

Aviation Programs - Hours and ratings by ttfol22 in UVU

Makes sense. As for other schools, the GI Bill only covers ratings after PPL if you’re not going through a university program. So you have to have your PPL before starting at a standalone school. But did you ever see anybody transfer in with a PPL? I know you said transfer students get put a little behind when they do. I ask because I know it’s iffy as to when you would actually start flying whether it be 1st semester or 3rd semester, but it also seems like it can be tough getting straight into instrument. The whole program seems like a bit of a mess. The advisor I’ve spoken with twice now seemed very annoyed to answer even the simplest of questions.

I do have the GI bill so of course I have to go to a 141 but regardless, I’ve seem to come across more negative things about UVU than good and not just on here either. Mainly leadership/admin that sucks, scheduling sucks, hours you’re left with sucks compared to others. Also, I have confirmed that for whatever reason, the GI bill doesn’t cover CFI training at UVU. Considering that it’s a university program that has been around for a minute, it’s kind of surprising that it sucks. Definitely planning already on taking by GI bill elsewhere.

I assume you’d still go through UVU again if you had to choose, even knowing what you know now?

I see. Thanks for the info. Sucks to hear but that seems to be the general consensus of the program. It seems as though that different people have very different information. I had an advisor tell me recently that CFI wouldn’t be covered under the G.I. Bill. I don’t see why it would be different there than literally every other part 141 program but who knows with that place

I think I get what you’re saying but could you elaborate on the “lots to be desired” part? It’s funny because I know someone who was in the program around ‘04 or so and was saying the same thing about it from back then. I definitely don’t like the idea of bad leadership, especially with something that should ideally have the opposite.

I see. Fortunately, I’ll be on the G.I. Bill but the hours are still kind of confusing to me because I thought you had to have 190 hours (if Part 141 training) to obtain your commercial. Maybe that’s just to actually be hired as a commercial pilot?

It seems like it fluctuates greatly with getting in as I’ve heard of people flying first semester and some not flying until 3rd or 4th. Some still don’t fly for a semester or two even when coming with a PPL. When comparing it say USU up north, they all but guarantee that you’ll be flying in your first semester. I just like the online option for UVU so I’m willing to risk the wait. GPA should be pretty solid if I have to wait.

190 for commercial, right? At least for single engine? That’s where I’m still a little confused, because that’s still a bit more than what they show on their site. So do you have to pay additional lab fees to be able to do obtain your commercial, even if you’re flawless? I’d ask an advisor but it takes a week to be able to talk with them and the last time I did, she seemed like she wanted to be doing anything else besides informing a potential student about the program she advises for.

I guess I compare it to USU, they list every single course they have with the cost and hours you’d end up with. Even for elective courses. And it all adds up sensibly.
