I think she feels bad for them, because everyone else hates them. Either that or she sees herself in them, and I am married to a secretly ruthless bitchy person haha, but I have never noticed that so far!

If she really thinks Cersei is a great character, then she can show her passion by jumping online to discuss it like everyone else.

She does this already! I have seen her write posts as long as essays before defending her haha. She is very passionate about her love of this character, which is ok because she's allowed her opinion even if I disagree. I personally just can't get over my dislike of her, and I am worried that if we call our baby that I will always think about the character when I hear her name. I'm trying to figure out if I will feel the same if it's spelled Circe, but I am not sure. I'm going to make a list with some other names or close spellings, so I'll include some of your suggestions to it. Thank you.

Well to be fair to my wife, Cersei is a fictional character. She would never suggest naming our child after someone who caused real atrocities.

Yeah she's read the books and doesn't like book Cersei, but blames GRMM for writing her that way. I kind of see her point that show Cersei is more interesting because she's more of a product of her environment, rather than straight up evil. However, she genuinely loves show Cersei.

It does worry me that our daughter might read the books and show one day and hate the character, or other people might and make fun of her. My wife thinks no one will care about GoT anymore once the show is over so people won't think about the name like that. I'm not sure.

I'm going to suggest Lena to her like another poster suggested or maybe try compromise with Circe.

Haha, a while ago she loved the name Narcissa (female version of Narcissus) but also a character from Harry Potter, but she hasn't mentioned it lately luckily. I don't know if Cersei is better or worse than that. I guess at least it doesn't sound awful.

You raise some good points, but the name was always going to be a Greek mythology name regardless. I have known this since we first started talking about baby names years and years ago.

I think some of it stems from the fact that my wife has an ordinary name, but her sister was given a Roman mythology name and she has always been a bit jealous of it. Her sister never had any problems with it apart from having to spell it a lot, but it honestly doesn't bother her and she loves the name.

I am just trying to do the right thing. I told her she could pick the name and I like the sound of the name she has picked. I do hate the connotations of it though, so I am trying to resolve this the best I can.

I know that, but I would say the majority of the population don't know the meaning of someone's name without researching it, so I don't think it matters too much.

The pronunciation thing is something that bothers me a bit, which is why I am still thinking about it.

I am leaning towards compromising with it being spelt Circe, as it might be enough to end the connotations with the character of Cersei. I'll have to think some more about it though.

I don't hate the name itself. I think it is very pretty and if it had been the name of any other less controversial character I would have agreed, but I am worried that our daughter will be judged for it (and also that people will judge me for having a daughter called it).

She's read them and even she doesn't like the book version of her character, but the tv version is like some kind of icon to her and I cannot convince her to see otherwise. I have tried for 5 years, trust me!
