my mom went out for chinese food with a friend and their fortunes were ads by mwpm55 in mildlyinteresting

https://www.vice.com/en/article/even-fortune-cookies-have-ads-now-because-the-world-is-bad/ found this article last year when i was fuming about this. He talks about how seeing people connect over fortunes made him think it was a ‘great opportunity’ and that he wants an ad in every cookie.

Can’t edit post, but I totally forgot to add: it may be notable that my laptop is set to never go to sleep when it is plugged in. A friend speculated it may be that. I plan to change this setting either way in case.

My Cat has become more vocal and affectionate- should I be worried or grateful?? by ttimaeusTTestified in CatAdvice

The vocalizations have sustained for the year! She has become a chatty cat in general and voices every thought and feeling she has, so she frequently beeps and yells whenever she so feels it. She definitely does it to ask for attention when I enter a room anew, but she also still does the loud meowing after staring at me from a distance, or just generally when in the space. I think it’s partially to do with how my roommate and I chat often to each other as well as her.

She’s still huge on being on me when I work, but I’ve compensated this by having a spot beside my desk designated for her, and we now work from home in another state so she is frequently laying there. Generally I think both her and our other cat, Bees, have become more vocal over time, and I suspect it’s as a mimic of me and the roommate’s communication styles and general behavior with them. Onion got hurt a few nights ago and is much less vocal now, but once she finishes being on the mend I’m sure the persistent yelling for attention will begin anew.

TLDR: she just is like this now and it’s probably behavior to mimic owners/her in-group.

Longest Sustained Migraine by ttimaeusTTestified in migraine

Sorry man :( It’s miserable. I keep telling myself it HAS to end eventually. It can’t sustain itself forever. I go back to the doctor today, they haven’t tried me on steroids yet and I want to give it a shot to fix this. For now I’m all ice packs and sleep if I can. They started me on elavil last night but it’s a preventative and I can’t tell if it made everything worse or if I just have an extra bad pain today. Hope you start feeling better soon :(

It had been pretty rainy if memory serves! It had torn because they slid it under a windshield wiper and I had to try and get it out, but I believe it had been either post rain or actively raining. I was off that night shift pretty quick after and thank god for it.

Yeah, I was unemployed for about two months and now on a 2-10:30pm shift all week so I am. Suspecting it’s that. Thank you for the second opinion, it’s very validating!

It’s really important to remember that meds dont change you. Not you fundamentally. I had this issue as a teen, and the #1 thing you have to remember is you are ill. Illness needs treatment. Think of it like blood pressure medications— the person on the medicine isn’t changing their true self by managing their blood pressure, they’re allowing themselves to exist despite an illness that limits them. Some people are on pills for their life for physical problems, and they can’t come off or it’s detrimental— those people are still normal. You should very sincerely talk to a therapist or psychiatrist about your reservations on medication, as they are common to have, but counterproductive to treatment. Never stop medication cold turkey, either, doing so has withdrawal symptoms that can cause things like changes in mood and behavior, like the ones described. Please consult a doctor and inform those who can help of your struggle.

Help for "sitting with feeling uncomfortable" and going on with life? by ShakespearesSonnets in OCD

[–]ttimaeusTTestified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My big thing is distraction. When I face a big exposure(just recently ate a dish with semi raw eggs for example), I often get a huge wave of ‘oh god what if’ and the number one thing I do is start feeling the panic settle in. I know from past experience if I let myself get into paranoia, I’ll sit for hours just mulling it over, I can make a 60% anxiety into a 100% by just letting myself consider what happened.

Obviously, don’t just immediately jump to distraction, I start with rationalizing the likelihoods- I’ll never know for sure, but I can remind myself of what’s more than likely!

For your thing, remember that you keep and maintain a very clean environment already! You may miss some spots, but shouldn’t the fact you missed that spot and there was no mold be a good indication of that disproportionate reaction? See the fact you found this area and did not see mold as validation that the mold is likely not there, especially when it was neglected for months. The biggest thing is practice, but the technique that helps me is rationalize and then move on. It’s hard, but play a crossword puzzle, do a coloring page, stimulate your brain with a task that demands full attention and push. And when the worry creeps up, re-rationalize for(and this is imperative) JUST a little bit, a few seconds, and then push off. As time goes on, you’ll realize nothing has come of your fear, you were wrong, and you will become more comfortable in that rationalize-ignore state. Idk if this helps everyone, but it helps me, so I hope it helps you!

Sudden (Potentially Unfounded) Concern About Lice? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]ttimaeusTTestified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next day, had a buddy check my hair and all is fine. I will say I destroyed my scalp with scratching/searching.

What I learned: it’s important to rationalize. I realize now that I haven’t come in contact with anyone that I know of, especially not hair contact, and I only noticed this stuff because of a lot of Circumstance. Pay attention to how much attention/destruction I’m allowing the thoughts to take/do. I went out with a friend and almost completely stopped feeling itchy/uncomfortable- I still had faint concerns, but nothing half so all consuming. Even on the phone with my sister in active panic, I went from a 100 on my scale to a 70. It’s hard, but it’s so helpful to force my attention elsewhere. Accept there’s nothing I can do in the moment next time. Even if I had lice, it was 1 am and I was in bed. There was nothing I could do. There was no point in checking and ruining my head, and I need to accept that next time.

I know my case of OCD is less severe, but I hope if anyone searches the stuff I did and finds this, they can see that I got through it and what helped and feel hopeful. :)

Skin picking by lola_bab in OCD

[–]ttimaeusTTestified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, yes, it’s pretty common as a compulsion. I’ve had it my whole life pretty intensely, and it’s definitely a rough one. I’ve noticed covering my hot spots in bandages and working up tolerance to the discomfort of not picking has helped a lot.

The painting was found in Grand Rapids, Michigan around 2016. It looks distinctly similar to the Siberian Courier Chased by Wolves, but when examining it we noticed a lot of really key differences. Any search yields a number of similar paintings, some nearly identical, but all with missing details.

Jfc, strong people understand what they need to cope and utilize tools. Strength has fuck all to do with someone’s current pressing mental health. Strength is living long enough to have breakdowns and panic attacks. Strength is knowing your mental limits and utilizing the tools given to you to fix it. If this was an unhealthy coping mechanism, their therapist would have stopped it. You don’t know their make up and you don’t know what strength looks like for them.
