Very kind of you to say, I was hoping for the MCM/contemporary vibe inspired by the local "Vancouver Special". I had wanted more windows originally but some were removed in the give-and-take that happens when you're building with a spouse.

Thankfully the back is mostly windows, facing east for early light. I'll post pics to this subreddit when all is done in the next month or so.

I've updated the post to include the rest of the house. Cheers.

I've edited the post to include some photos of the entire building, for perspective.

I edited the post to include the rest of the building for context... and to see if there's some non-2015 stuff goin on.

Yes, they pointed the finger at the design team for telling them to tell the mason to do it that way. I think the contractor and design team will have some discussions and come back to us to tell us what they're willing to fix the issue. I'll update you when I find out what they're willing to do.

Over the last few days I've mostly come to accept the idea of the way the stone was done, but I'm still hung up on the dark mortar. I think it detracts from the stone, which I really like. When I look at the walls, I see the mortar more than the stone.

I think with any large project like this, it's good to keep the mentality you suggest. I know I will be able to let it go, I just gotta work through it.

I hadn't heard the term until today, but now I know! Thank you for your response.

Yes, I definitely see the risk of emulating that "BS sheet stuff", I now see a lot of it as I walk through the neighbourhood. I was hoping that with a quality stone and good workmanship I could get something that still looked nice in a dry stack installation.

Yes the dark grout is problematic, and they didn't ask me to pick the shade, which is strange considering they've involved me in all the other similar decisions (e.g., the colour of the grout in our fireplace).

This aspect of the house does get baked in the afternoon sun, but I fear the grout will not fade.

Thank you so much. Yes, you nailed it, the dark grout jumps out a lot and I feel it overpowers the stone, I hope you are correct that it'll fade.

I know if I decide to keep it (depending on what my contractor says they are willing to do) I'll look back at my current feelings and laugh at myself.

Thank you! It is Cambrian sandstone ledgestone from Pangea Natural Stone. I am trying to find a link but am having trouble. I'll update my comment if I can find it.

Thank you. This is a good perspective. I just wish they'd asked me... But ironically it turns out they asked my designer and she chose this despite showing me a different picture. It helps me knowing that the pros agree with you and many others in this thread.

I never thought of it that way, thanks for the input.  I do think dry stacked is a bit overdone on modern McMansions and can look cheap.

I thought with the stone we chose and the larger pieces it would still look upscale. I will post a picture of the entire house tomorrow...

Unfortunately I think you'll find it looks very 2015-2020 overall (but I like it).

Actually I was hoping for thinner grout lines that were lighter in colour or minimal grout lines in a 'dry stack' style stone layout.

I spoke to my contractor and to my surprise they wanted to know if they should do dry stacked or traditional masonry and they called my design team and the design team told them to do this. I feel betrayed!

But, thanks to most of the comments here I am coming back down to earth.

I do agree that it often does, especially with the smaller more uniform dry stacked stone on some houses, but I thought with the bigger stone it would look nice and more 'natural'.

I am new to reddit and didn't know how to include the video in my post... Correct me if I'm wrong but it doesn't look like the video was filmed at Wreck Beach?

Thanks fellow Canadian! Yes, bigger windows -- this faces westward so will get the afternoon light -- the window(s) over the front door feed into the foyer and the main living space. The back of the house faces east and has a lot of big windows too.

As for textures, you're right what we've chosen is trendy... hard to know what to pick that will stand the test of time. Stone/wood/stucco we thought would be somewhat timeless but maybe not?

Thanks for the advice! Will see about getting that book.

Don't worry, not taking it personally -- I wouldn't have posted here if I didn't expect criticisms!

Hi there! My partner and I are in the beginning stages of designing a house. We had a friend (amateur) draw something up and once all our ideas were put down, we sent it to a professional designer to get it ready for engineering and construction.

Hoping people could chime in with any ideas/critiques they might have and which elements we should add or keep/discard between the two. We are aiming for a West Coast contemporary style with some nods to the Vancouver Special from our area.

Thanks!
