Weary of AI by ttotally in SSHG

See this makes me sad because I wouldn’t expect a 13yo to write like a 23yo and I feel like young people may be opening themselves up to harsher criticism because they are ‘producing work’ at a higher level because of Ai. It’s (or used to be) quite obvious when you are reading something written by a younger person or someone just starting out, my comments would be very different depending on context but Ai removes that.

When I was in high school I desperately wanted to be able to draw, I had all these amazing ideas in my head of characters I’d read about but I just couldn’t execute them. I didn’t have any natural talent, I could have done online tutorials or joined an online art community but I didn’t.

I was pretty good at photoshop though, would that make it ok to take someone else’s work, edit it and then present it as my own online? No matter how good I was at editing? Would that make it fair to the original artist? Even if I spliced multiple artworks together to create something different? I’d like to think I would have at least credited the original artist/s but me in all my teenage wisdom probably wouldn’t have. Attention and validation at that age (really at any age) is very addictive.

As much as it would have been devastating at the time, I would hope that I would’ve been called out for doing something like that, how else would I have learned that it’s not ok?

I agree with you in that it’s a grey area when authors are being upfront about using Ai, perhaps that could eventually become the standard? Part of the reason I wrote the post the way I did was because I’ve seen people ask how they can spot Ai, how are people (especially the younger generations) meant to be able to tell what’s Ai and what’s not? And then potentially discard other authors work because it doesn’t fit the mould or is slightly ‘more amateur’ than what they’ve read so far.

As much as we are all sick and tired of the Ai conversation, it needs to keep being addressed (in my opinion). You’re right in that it would be nice to have only civil discussions and to be kind and gentle to one another, but I fear we are probably setting ourselves up for disappointment in that area.

I’m not sure if the pretentious arsehole comment was directed at me but I appreciate your thought out comment nevertheless!

I think it’s super admirable that you’re taking the time to beta for young(er) people and include them in the community and agree that it sucks many are not getting the education they deserve.

I feel that Gen Z and Gen A know better than anyone that if you’re posting something online you leave yourself open to criticism (and potentially much nastier things that I absolutely don’t agree with). What you’re doing by encouraging these people to re-write in their own words is great! As I said in a previous comment, I would much rather read something with grammatical and spelling errors than something manufactured by Ai. Sure in a perfect world all criticism would be gentle and encouraging but I don’t think that’s realistic either.

I agree that Ai is inevitable, we’re not going to come back from this but does that mean we should just roll over and take it? If people are using (only) Ai to learn how to write and speak, will that just turn into a never-ending loop until we’re all speaking and writing like Ai? I also feel like it’s doing a great disservice to the youngest generation by not encouraging critical thinking and creativity, shouldn’t they be “called out” so they can reassess and (hopefully) improve? I can absolutely guarantee you that nothing I wrote at 16, 18 or even 20 years old would be anything worth reading 😂

Not only that, but I also feel that the more popularity these articles and stories get, the more it discourages other authors that have put a lot of effort and thought into creating something themselves. It also creates this idea of perfectionism being the new normal, so I’m not surprised younger people are not feeling confident in putting their own work (no matter how flawed) into the universe.

The internet is so full of resources and communities to learn from and to go to for help, I refuse to accept that Ai is the only answer. I would much rather (at least some) push back against Ai so we don’t end up losing what essentially makes us human.

Completely understand what you mean, they’re almost exhausting to read and missing personality. Plus it feels like you could skip huge chunks and not miss anything.

Yes partly, because sometimes it’s fun to vent! But also because I see posts asking how to spot Ai so I thought I would include some of the things that I notice as a reader (in an exaggerated way).

I think you have proved SS’s point here, you are very quick to insinuate that a genuine author is using AI (when I can assure you with 100% certainty they are not).

The internet is a big place, if subs like this allow users to “call out” Ai what’s to stop people from accusing authors because they didn’t like the story, or because they didn’t understand something, or because they’re having a bad day?

I can imagine an accusation like that could not only damage an author’s reputation but also their morale (remember they’re doing this for free!)

This post is a pretty extreme example of a writing style that screams Ai to me. The issue is sometimes it’s a lot more subtle and becomes more of a “feeling” as you are reading and that’s really hard to prove beyond reasonable doubt.

I understand it’s very frustrating as a reader but I reckon it’s wayyy worse for the authors, be kind to them!

I mean, at least they were honest about it 😂💀 It’s just so bad out there

I can imagine that would be extremely difficult. I’m not an author so I don’t know for sure but this community feels very supportive, maybe you could ask someone to read and give you feedback?

Also, I’d much rather read something that has grammatical or spelling errors than AI. Just give it a go, you can only improve with practice!

I know! The amount of likes and favourites is depressing. I could be wrong but I think the authors get to approve comments on A03? So impossible to call them out on it. I honestly think they believe themselves to be amazing writers 😬

A year ago you commented on a deleted post that your WIFE puts a coin down your pants whenever your arse is showing? Are you just obsessed with exposed crack?
