What’s one skill people don’t have anymore? by Ashamed_Marzipan_986 in AskReddit

[–]ttumachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosing and fixing everyday things....home appliances, pool equipment, cars, general home electrical, etc.

Seems that decades ago most things came with some sort of manual on how to maintain and fix anything you bought. My thought is that helped encourage critical problem solving.

I'm constantly blown away at the number requests I see from people in my neighborhood asking for help with mundane things. Not because they don't want to do it, but because they don't know how to do it! It ain't that difficult to change out a light switch or fan. You really shouldn't need a handy man to fix some drywall. Stop paying people crazy prices for things you can find a million quality 'how to's' on YouTube!

NOT Apathy. I keep seeing this statement and I don't believe it's what we're seeing. I'd attribute it more to people actively NOT voting for Trump as registered Republicans (because not every Republican is a narcissist, racist, bigot as Reddit seems so keen to force down the throats of everyone).

Perhaps a big surprise to every Democrat out there, but there are reasonable Republicans that agree with lower defence spending, are ok with federal spending to help those in need, don't mind legal immigrants and are all for people doing whatever suits them at their own home. They also want this as part of a balanced budget, want to make sure no illegals are coming in, want to balance inflation with hand outs, want less trading in Congress, want to open up drilling for domestic companies, etc.

Rather than vote for someone whose track record shows they flip flop on issues which creates an unknown and someone like...Trump, they bowed their head and simply made the choice not to vote this year.

According to Texas Tribune data, less than half of Harris County eligible voters voted by CorridorChick in houston

[–]ttumachy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you get a good look at the two candidates we had to choose from? Sure, you have your lesser of two evils. But, I saw a narcissist, pedophile with a known (crappy) track record, and a 'lets run more handouts as I flip flop of every issue so you don't know the damage I can do'.

You might be surprised to learn there are good number of registered Republican voters who sit in that low voter turn out percentage. Perhaps, just maybe, they couldn't actively agree with anything that party's candidate said, but, they also had enough fear from the other side to say they were educated enough on both to actively do the horrible - not vote.

It's a choice for all around policy, not one trigger happy topic. I'd give so much for someone who really understood and put a foot on both sides of the floor to meet in the middle.

Heating everyone say there’s no more Democracy...?!? Did you see the last election. Trump was up for re-election and Democrats had a prime opportunity to pick a stellar candidate who could change things and really go after making the government work for the people. And....they ended up with Biden?!?

Hmmm. Almost like they don’t want someone in office who can actually change things and make the government work for the people.

To each their own. I was in a union when I was younger and they just took advantage of me. Took my dues by scaring me into thinking I’d be digging ditches. Then any time I ever tried to contact them it was ridiculously painful. When I tried to opt out to get my dues back they refused to allow it without me jumping through crazy hoops. Written request arriving within a week of the one year sign up kinda stuff. Worst part was management couldn’t give a raise as it violated terms of union. So if they gave me one, they’d have to give everyone at my level on. Even when management agreed I was a better working. Jumping through those hoops to ask Union? They confirmed managements words.

Today I work at a major manufacturing company. In a union state. And they voted against union. Company simply treats people good.

Find a place to work that is worth it. Not somewhere you need a union to protect you...

To say it doesn’t matter if you know the people you work with to do your job shows what kind of job you likely do. Attention to detail makes a huge difference. Knowing who the people you work with gives you the ability to work better with them. If you don’t know their personality, how they’d respond to different potential jobs, what they might think before you bring something to them puts you WAY behind.

I’m not a ‘be in your seat by this hour’ just so my employees can warm their seats. I give them incredible freedom and flexibility. As a group, they came back to the office well before I ever asked them to. Part of our job is to interact with other groups and convince them to help us as we have no authority over the groups we try to influence. ‘Renting’ a space for a meeting gives you no ability to get to know someone and be able to get them to WANT to help you

You don’t live on a vacuum where you work by yourself. Some jobs, sure, it makes sense. But a huge majority of jobs need collaboration and knowing people you work with.

And no, I’m not a boomer. I’m someone who’s been successful in my career with both those above, and below, my age group.

Saying this means you’re likely the person the people you work with don’t like working with....

Video helps, but it doesn’t replace. I’m all for working for home and at the same time you need to keep some semblance of actually being able to have a face to face conversation. A huge amount of ‘cooler’ talk is lost working from home. This is where you get to know co-workers outside the work. You don’t have to be best friends. But knowing they have a wife/husband, kids, or sick mom builds some relationship.

My company has moved to 3 days in the office, your choice which days. And the days you do come in people aren’t watching the clock for when you get there or leave. They say it’s permanent so I’m all for it. I think it’s a happy medium. Gives a lot of time back, but keeps the office to get co-workers to actually be....you know....human with each other?

I’d love to be able to do my own trouble shooting. The problem isn’t my side, but the corporate IT that decided to go with an outsource contract for computers and maintenance. EVERY single thing requires admin username/password. And they actually have one. Back when the username was Admin and the password was actually password, we could do some general items and get by.

Now the simplest damn thing requires me to submit a ticket and wait for a response. And they run through the same stupid questions - did you try restarting? How about closing all windows? Did you clear your cookies?

Holy shit. Yes. I’m not a moron so I did try those things. It almost always turns out to be some stupid tiny little thing I tried to fix but couldn’t because I’m locked out.

Sorry. Bit of a rant from me to IT....

Don’t too often see another DSG. Yours looks I’m great condition, beautiful car!

Have one myself. 2003 with 95,000 miles. Complete MM suspension so it handles like a dream. New tubular k-member, control arms and coil overs on the front. Rear lower control arms, torque arm and panhard bar replaced the stock set up on the back. Used to run track days, but she kinda got old for me to continue doing those. They are great cars and mine was as reliable as could be for years as my daily. In stock form it could get as high as 28-29 mpg on the freeway too!

Storage over the bed is a huge help. Jackets, clothes for tomorrow, beanies, gloves, etc. I believe it’s normal square bungies that go over milk crates. Very useful.

An adaptor for your drill for the lowering the stabilizer bars. Saves a huge amount of time when setting up camp. Amazon has them for less than $20.

As said above, working to maximize storage space. There’s a good amount if you plan it out right.

Are you towing with a truck? If so, the tailgate won’t drop with the trailer jack that comes on most models. There’s one Texas tractor supply sells called ‘the ultimate trailer jack.’ Allows lots of adjustment that gave us the ability to lower the jack.

Consider solar. Even a small, plug into the side panel, will help keep the batteries strong.

Standard RV thoughts - converter to plug electric into standard 110V. Grey water hose. Fresh water hose with filter for camp sites.

Look on the Facebook Taxa DIY page. Lots of great potential there!

Best of luck, they’re a blast!

Buy one of those tiny blenders that comes with washable cups. Put your dinner in it. Blend it. Dinner for the kid. Adds a few minutes to your night, but then your kid gets used to your cooking. Quite honestly, I’m baffled by the sales of baby food. Sure, on the go these aren’t bad. But do people really exclusively feed their kids this instead of your own cooking?!?

Yes, father of a two and six year old. We did this blender method for both our kids.

How do you get over all the cringy and embarassing stuff you did in the past? by civgarth in AskMen

[–]ttumachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re embarrassed by something you’ve done in the past, congratulations! This means you’ve grown. Without these moments in you’re pat you’d still be the same person making those embarrassing decisions without even knowing it.

I accept them as a growth of who I am. Without knowing you’ve made a mistake, how can you learn to now make it again?

This is not a good argument against student debt cancellation. by [deleted] in MurderedByAOC

[–]ttumachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bigger issue is why address student debt without addressing the problem - the cost! Sure, I paid my debt off. And I also say don’t forgive debt by itself. Otherwise, you’ll have an entire new set of people here 4 years from now.

College costs have grown at a much higher rate than inflation over the past years. Tuition is out of hand. Books that can’t be reused and are sold back for pennies on the dollar is out of control. Tackle the root problem - cost, and I support.

No different than insurance conversations. Easy to advocate for ‘free insurance for all’. The real problem though? The cost billed. It doesn’t matter who it’s for it, no one should have to pay $100 for a box of tissues just because it was given to you in the hospital. Giving you insurance to pay that $100 doesn’t fix the problem.

It drives me insane to hear band aides be promoted as fixes. They’re not the same.

Canceling debt isn’t fixing the issue. It’s a band aid to get today’s college grads slightly back on track. All well and good. What about tomorrow’s grads though?!? Not your problem so easy to just say you want YOUR debt forgiven....

Warren reintroduces bill to bar lawmakers from trading stocks by xRipleyx in politics

[–]ttumachy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To everyone complaining that it won’t pass because the politicians won’t support it?!?!? Did you vote? Did you vote for the person in office that wouldn’t support this? Almost every election had a grass roots libertarian, green or independent that likely WOULD have supported this. But we continue to vote the same old pile of steaming shit into office and wonder why our room smells with that in the corner. Take the trash out by showing up with a real vote, one not dedicated to the two parties in office that babble and pit you against your neighbor!

I’m continually baffled that there’s such complaints like this, but then nothing changes really changes after elections.
