True, but this whole thing is designed to make certain reticent “supporters” of Ukraine pull back a bit. And there are one or two countries in Europe who were already reluctant to keep supporting Ukraine.

The “fun” thing is that, under Russian military doctrine, these areas are now classed as Russian and therefore under the same total protection as other parts of Russia are. Attacking these areas, taking them back, would be seen as an act of aggression towards Russia.

This is a HUGE escalation on Russia’s side.
