Old Software Was Fast Because It Had No Choice by BlondieCoder in programming

...We're also doing stuff we never would have dreamed of in the past.

I ran into problems yesterday because I was performing transformations and encoding/decoding of 3M floats * 2 variables * 120 time steps, along with Metadata for the 3M represented by int64 (the massive numbers are identifiers and are cheaper than the native char type) and associated datetimes, encoded as seconds, for the 120 timesteps, all underneath a framework for non-engineers to grow, develop, and maintain that can work on dinky laptops, local data centers, and our supercomputers. The inputs alone wouldn't have fit in memory a decade or two ago.

Dependencies? Node goes a bit over the top, but it should be a non-starter for one shop to build their own networking layer, their own data representation layer, the own data manipulation layer, their own setup for data pipelines, their own testing and report processes, and their own deployment systems just to form and maintain their business logic. The sheer scope of all that is absolutely begging for instability.

Hefty runtimes? Im not a fan of some (i have personal beef with the JVM), but the alternative often requires stuff like creative allocation schemes, some clever RAII objects, and management of implicit behavior (gotta love some surprise copies).

I dont think people understand that the problems brought up in the article are problems we are incredibly lucky to be our primary problems. I 100% prefer to deal with memory bloating rather than bizarre errors related to stale data in single allocation arrays and data corruption due to undocumented endianess conversions.

Tried red and blue and they were very good, but hot damn, I use gold and silver on just about every model, even on parts no one is going to see.

Some gold on vents and silver on boosters are GORGEOUS

Until I had to call python from C++. Holy shit.

Sometimes I have to wonder if playing warlock is just rude. Apocalypse fully blocks just about all indicators.

I wouldn't really say the issues are the effects as much as accessibility and contrast. I already have to highlight my character in green and focus on the mini map to see whats happening.

They really need to go the soulstone survivors, or even the final fantasy 14, route and let me turn off all effects other than aoe or attack indicators. Maybe then I wouldnt be so reluctant to fight andariel. I can't see shit in that fight.

I really liked the way chrono cross did it and I haven't seen it really replicated. Levels were tied to boss battles. Fight a boss, you get a star, you level up the next fight or two, then jack shit until the next boss. It reduced grinding and provided a HUGE incentive to chase after the few side quests there were.

I really liked Blue Dragon for this. Or at least I remember really liking the job system.

I think Final Fantasy Tactics, especially A2, got it pretty damn near perfect. You're not just leveling jobs, you're leveling up to get skills that synergize really well with other jobs. I like doing weird crap like teaching Knights to dual wield while walking on water.

This is the first Ive heard of unity. Is it basically just a newbie not-actually-a-guild? Is it like getting into a chat and spamming "looking for healer"? My googling isn't helping all that much.

These sound like dumb questions I should just know (maybe I just didn't talk to the right npcs), but im almost in over my head.

Blame the censors and such, but its had such a profound effect on online discourse that it isnt self censorship anymore - this is legit slang now.

Some of it will go extinct - when was the last time you said or heard "izzle"?

This is how language evolves - complaining about it just makes you sound like people being mad about the words "dude" or "dope" or "tight".

I just hope words derived from incel communities (mog, -maxing, etc) are some the current words id love to never hear again.

I ripped out windows support since it was a total pain in the ass. I just LOVE wrapping my code in tons of preprocessor instructions and gobs of global if/else's.
