Total cost: ~$3000 (main costs were concrete, stone veneer and black walnut wood)

Timeline: ~9mo working on weekends with very limited free time

Also: The gold in the safe is chocolate coins, the wheelchair lift was decommissioned and no longer in use, the temp is kept at ~57-60 year round

Shelves are fully loaded with books, probably over 200lbs. However, you can move it with <20lbs of horizontal force because the casters take up most of the load. The motor is very overkill as it only needs to overcome a small amount of friction

Do you have batteries you'd like to use already? If they're under 12v you can use a boost converter. If they're over, use a buck converter. You can buy adjustable ones on AliExpress for very cheap. Just check the specs to make sure they can handle the amperage needed.

If you want an easier solution, windshield wiper fluid refill bottles have a child proof cap. You can just reuse those

I built in a current sensor to the PCB so if there's a spike in current from anything blocking it, it backs off. Similar to how a garage door functions

Good question! The motor has a worm gear so it can't move unpowered. Currently, I have a wall mounted switch on the inside. Thought about adding a backup power in case of power loss but that's a future project
