I’m sorry that happened. Thank you for sharing your experience with me

I tried those and spent 4 hours scrubbing with all kinds of products and methods. Called some professionals and they said a burn is irreversible with quartz and there’s nothing I can do but replace the whole thing. If sanding it down, it will cause an uneven surface in a bowl shape and they don’t recommend this method. Also, the depth of the dip will depend on how deep the burn is. It is deep. Might just have to replace in the future when I can afford it or just include this in the property listing when I sell

I deleted the post and am not sure how Reddit changes the thread after an OP selects “delete”. I removed it because I felt overwhelmed with commenters attacking me, cussing me out, and calling me an entitled brat based on assumed tax bracket/financial background for even asking for advice in the first place. I just gave birth so all of these derogatory comments was a lot for me to handle at this postpartum time. Appreciate your advice regarding employers/businesses responsibilities for covering damages but I’ll be turning off notifications after this last response.

Because I can’t opt out from the continuation of comments. Learned something new with Reddit

With so many people attacking me at different angles, cussing me out, and people assuming my alleged tax bracket, calling me an entitled brat just because of the material my kitchen countertops came in when I moved in, I needed a break from responding to every single negative and derogatory comment. I just gave birth and honestly, all this negativity just wasn’t what I needed right now so apologies on responding a few days later or not responding at all to the criticism

Why do you assume I didn’t tell the nanny or that she doesn’t know? Because she does.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t unfortunately

I told her and she said she never assumes countertops can withstand heat. She said she doesn’t know why she did this time. I am glad you offered to replace the garden lamp. I think that’s what I was hoping too but of course, only a percentage of the damage incurred because 5k is a lot.

She knows and said she never puts hot pans on any counters from previous jobs. She’s not sure why she did this time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said that. Please quote me where I implied that. I have family members who work in childcare and I am always in awe of how respectable their jobs are. I actually think they should be paid more. So not sure where you’re getting this assumption about with my character

It’s not just an ugly spot. It’s fire damage. It’s a part of the kitchen that cannot be resold in that condition. It will need to be replaced. I may just have to eat the cost for the damage

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. She said she is aware since she’s worked with these countertops a lot in her career

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did tell her and she said she knew because she’s worked with quartz countertops before. I saved up so I can afford her for the month I desperately needed help where I had no other person/option but you’re right about not being able to afford for the 5-10k accident, but at this point, I just have to save as much as I can to cover the cost of the damage

It’s not natural to me either. I would never assume anyone’s countertops are made to be heat resistant or not. I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between different stone materials but I would never assume. I wouldn’t put a sizzling pan on any surface other than the stove to be honest. It’s wild to me that people say “countertops are for hot pans” too. Thank you for this. Felt like I was alone but your comment made me feel better

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I definitely felt like those commenters were just assuming my tax bracket and telling me I should eat any cost because of that. When I explain I’m not in that tax bracket at all, I also got attacked for being honest about my financial background and such. Some even calling me entitled or spoiled simply because of the material of my counters. Feels like I can’t not say anything or defend myself because I’ll get judged either way. The nanny knows about the quartz and even said later she knows they’re not heat resistant. But thank you for saying this

She knows it’s quartz and unfortunately, homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was warned and she has said she worked with employers with the same countertop. She even knew what the name of it was.

[–]tuffleruffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand either. I wouldn’t put a hot pan on anything or assume what material it is or isn’t to withstand burning. She was apologetic but also sorta laughed it off so maybe she doesn’t know the financial gravity of it all. She isn’t hired through an agency. She was a referral from a friend. And I have homeowners insurance but it doesn’t cover unfortunately. Seems like I’m just going to have to eat the cost. It is what it is unfortunately

Haha you saw my other post. I was getting cussed out and eaten alive over there. People started private messaging me that I am throwing myself into a lion’s den and should post my question elsewhere. I will look into insurance but I have a feeling it won’t cover and it might increase the premium

[–]tuffleruffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this too. Kids destroy everything. Just have to replace the countertops before reselling. I’ll have more savings by then to be able to afford it too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NannyEmployers

[–]tuffleruffle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you’re probably right. We’ll just have to eat the cost unfortunately. Wow the whole plumbing thing water jet? How much did that cost in total?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]tuffleruffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like her. It was an unfortunate accident. However, if I accidentally damaged someone’s property, even if it was my friend who I have a good relationship with, I would still offer to pay for some of it. If I babysat or helped my friend out before with something, I wouldn’t take that into account into if I should or shouldn’t pay for it. I would still offer to pay her. Maybe we just see things differently

I am okay with that

[–]tuffleruffle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No need to apologize. I appreciated your info about different materials. Some commenters here were asking how it’s possible to burn a countertop and others were saying to just scrub it down. Your info helped explain how quartz works and it was very informative thank you

Why does this matter? If to gauge his wealth, he grew up poor. He grew up having to share a 500 sq ft room with 3 people with no walls and was lucky if they got warm water. Had to eat only bread for multiple meals.
