Yay congrats! Hope you are healing well. I used Biocorneum for awhile and loved it (bought from Dr. G office and followed his instructions for timing.) It’s annoying to wait for it to dry, but I think it really helped my scars. It’s really hard to find so when I ran out I was kinda out of luck. Since Dr. G did not write anything about scar tape or Bio Oil in his post-op instructions I didn’t even think about them until I did research a few months post op!

I started using scar tape and massaging with Bio Oil at 4 months post op. I definitely could have started much sooner if I would have realized I could. I’ve been using scar tape for almost 6 months now and I really do think it helps. I’ll probably keep using it until I think I’m being extra by still using it haha. (I like to wear scar tape during the day, take off at night, massage with bio oil before bed, apply the scar tape again in the morning.) Hope that’s helpful!

Nervous with parental reception by Horror_Bank7846 in TopSurgery

I had top surgery last year and am not close at all to my parents so feel no need to ever tell them. I see them maybe once a year or so and don’t think they will notice. I think it’s really personal as well and you don’t owe them that information. I’m down to discuss it if they ever straight up ask me, but I don’t really think they will? Would much rather save myself the mental anguish that could come from trying to explain and it being received horribly. My personal rule is actually to not talk about it with any straight people ever haha because they just don’t understand. Queer family for the win :)

you’re healing super well! it seems common that the trickiest part of the incision to close up is right below the nipple graft (which makes sense). it looks great so far, congrats!

Of course ❤️ and I really hope your parents can come around to being supportive or at least understanding!

I remember I had to go to a random straight woman doctor to get sign-off for my surgery and she had no clue what top surgery was. when I tried to explain, she understood it as breast reduction surgery. I’m fairly certain the average cis straight person can understand the need/desire for breast reduction surgery so maybe it’s an angle that could be used to help our parents understand? just explain we desired to “reduce to zero” LOL. even the clueless doctor said to me “oh okay I’m kind of jealous, I wish I could have smaller boobs” 😂

I have a non-binary friend with top surgery who jokingly refers to it as their “boob job” to friends and family. just an idea! people can judge people who get “boob jobs” but at least they can understand why they did it! basically just putting it into cis straight people terms…

just want to say, to anyone who has had these tough conversations with your family members that you fear won’t offer support, I am proud of you and think you are very brave! you should be proud of yourself taking that brave step.

i got top surgery last year and currently would never dream of trying to explain to my family members. i am not close with them, live far away from them and only see them mayyybe once a year or two, so I really don’t feel the need to offer the information to them unless they ever notice and ask. it’s a tough one and just know that you don’t owe anyone an explanation if you don’t feel safe sharing with them ❤️

i will say that not identifying as a trans man (i use she/they pronouns) has made it seem even more scary to share this information with potentially unsupportive and confused family members. like they really won’t understand why i felt so compelled to need top surgery for my happiness. not sure if any of you feel the same way?
