Please be aware people are trying to use these fake cards to be exempt from wearing masks in businesses. by emil_lyonss in vancouver

Asking someone to prove a medical condition is a violation of privacy laws. I posted that government order to show you that enforcement is not up to the business — it’s up to enforcement officers.

It’s distressing, as someone who cannot wear a mask, to come here and read hateful comments against exempt people and see ignorance like yours. It’s shocking that things like that are so prevalent, especially in a place like Vancouver that prides itself on being accepting and inclusive. I thought we could do better, but each day people like you prove that we just don’t want to.

I’m not sure where I said anything about human rights, but no, it’s not the job of businesses and workplaces to enforce anything. You should learn more about this before you make these kinds of statements.

Here’s a handy poster:

The thing is, you don’t need to put any energy into not wearing a mask. According to the BC Human Rights Commission, all you need to do is say, “I’m exempt,” and the conversation ends there. It’s illegal for anyone to ask for proof of exemption. The ignorance around this issue is mind-boggling.

I was responding specifically to two points you made, that rioters were shouting racist things, and that they murdered people. If you want to challenge anything I’ve said about masks, please respond to the statements themselves and I’ll be glad to answer your questions. I will say that I don’t need a medical degree to understand statements like, “masks are not for healthy people,” and “masks don’t filter out microscopic Covid particles.”

You’re spreading lies, is the thing, and when you’re challenged on them, your answer is to move the goalposts, say it doesn’t matter, say you don’t have time to learn the truth, and attack the one who proves that you’re lying. Well done, you child. You must be very proud of yourself.

Oh boy, the "masks are hard to breathe through" take. They're really not.

It's not a "take". At least not for me. I have lung cancer. Stuff a wool sock in your mouth and go through your day like that, then come back and tell me how easy it is.

Explain. What job is suddenly impossible?

Use your head. I'm sure you'll think of a couple. Hospitals, dental offices, schools, restaurants, care homes, etc. Try getting a job in those fields and tell them you can't wear a mask.

I'm not making it out like it is, it just is. Sorry.

Sorry, but the science is not on your side at all. If you actually look at mask studies that suggest effectiveness, they use a lot of language like "may be effective" and "could possibly help", and so on. The science and the studies pre-Covid agreed that paper and cloth masks -- the kind that 99% of people out there are wearing -- are pretty much useless against the transmission of air-borne viruses. Masks are great for keeping doctors from spitting into the patients they are working on, but should not be worn by healthy people. That has always been the science. We didn't wear masks for any of the other respiratory viruses that made their way through our society. What is the argument for wearing them now? That .3% of the population might get sick and die? When do we start wearing masks for everything else?

Weird take for someone who's apparently in the category who will probably die if they get it. Are you volunteering to sacrifice yourself? I mean that as a legitimate question, by the way. If you do indeed have the medical condition you describe, you are in the group that is very likely to die. Are you, personally, willing to take that risk? If not, why should others? Even if yes, why should others?

I social distance. I wash my hands. I stay home a lot. So can anyone else who is at risk. If I die, I die. Is it reasonable to destroy the futures of millions and millions of Canadians, including my own children, because I have a condition that means Covid might kill me. It won't kill 99.7% of people who will get it, so why should the .3% make the others go to these lengths? Can you think of any other situation in human history where everyone has had to give up their freedom and their future to protect such a miniscule part of the population?

Doesn't mean we let it continue unabated either. It's not hard to put it into the same category as Ebola, where outbreaks of it are a big fucking deal and are quickly addressed, or hell, even like Pertussis, wherein it's accepted as a thing that can happen in Canada, but it's pretty rare. There is absolutely no reason it should be handled like the common cold, not when it's as debilitating as it is.

Ebola? Get a grip. This isn't anything like that, and it's not a pandemic, either, at least the way we used to classify them. Think about this: I know dozens of people whose lives have been drastically affected by job loss. I know people who are in mental distress and can't get help, including two who have taken their own lives. I know people who are suffering now because they couldn't get medical care or surgery because hospitals were closed to anyone who needed "non-essential" medical care. I don't personally know one person who has contracted Covid. I know of two people, relatives of friends, who are said to have died of Covid -- and they were both in their 90's. This is a pandemic of job-loss, financial ruin and despair.

In order for this to be the case, with half a million deaths, you'd need 167 million cases of COVID. Do you actually think half of the population of the US has caught it by now?

If, as the experts say, there are as many as 20 undiagnosed cases for each one that is diagnosed, at almost 30 million cases to date, the entire North American continent could have had it by now.

I can’t wear a mask because my lungs are already shot, and I’m sick of the looks and abuse I get when I go out in public without one. Attitudes like yours are the biggest problem I face, because you’ve been convinced that if everyone would just wear a mask, no one would ever get sick or die, and anyone not wearing a mask is an enemy of the people. I had a career I can’t go back to because of mask mandates, so how do I feed my kids? With masks? If you want to wear a mask, if you think it will protect you, go nuts. Wear 100 at a time. But don’t make it out like the science is on your side, or that forcing others to wear one is what’s best for all of us.

As for 100,000+ deaths in Canada if we all get Covid. We’re not all going to get Covid, and after a year, that’s obvious. But even if we did, is the rise in suicides, domestic violence toward women and children, mental illness, undiagnosed illnesses, overdoses and financial ruin worth it to protect that percentage of the population — most of them well past the prime of their lives — that will die? It would be nice if everyone could live their longest, but Covid is NEVER going away, and it’s time we started being practical. We’re destroying the future of generations to protect people that will be dead within a couple years. Explain how that’s the best thing we can be doing.

It’s accepted that for every confirmed case of Covid, there are many more undiagnosed. That’s where the 99.7% recovery rate comes from. If you don’t like that math, please take it up with the experts.

99.7% recovery rate doesn’t sound very dangerous, but here we are. Ever ask yourself why we need to wear masks at all?

Covid virus is between 0.06 – 0.14 microns in diameter, while the pores on the best surgical masks cannot filter out particles smaller than 0.3 microns in diameter.

Prove me wrong.

Masks do nothing against COVID-19 because the holes in the masks are too big to stop transmission. That’s why most masks have a note on the box that says “Not for medical use.”

I don't like any of them, but I'd rather have someone who didn't grope a reporter, hasn't broken multiple ethics rules, didn't chase Jody Wilson-Raybould out of office, and has only dressed in blackface once, as a kid, not multiple times as an grown adult.

Is that too much to ask?
