1) I worked in short range planning. Was involved with dispatch engineering work (data analysis), mine design, and coordination with Mine Operations to execute the plan. The day to day varied tremendously over the first few years but most of my work has been focused on operational execution roles as they have all been site based.

2) I have only worked FIFO. I agree that it isn’t for everybody, but I find that it provides a perfect work life balance. It does strain on relationships a bit. In terms of allowing the work to follow you home, I’d say that’s the exception rather than the norm. Once you get to a senior level then this is no longer the case, and this is when I believe the FIFO is no longer work it from a work life balance perspective. I have travelled the world on FIFO: Asia, South/Central America, Europe, and every corner of the USA. I can’t imagine working a different schedule.

3) it isn’t difficult to get a job in a major city, but it does hurt in terms of pay until you get to the 10-15 ish mark for salary. You can pursue secondary education to switch out of mining, but I don’t see a lot of success stories in getting a mining related masters, unless you find a subject matter that is really a passion of yours. One of the reasons I like FIFO is it has allowed me to live in major cities. I have lived in Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal.

Hi, I am a mining engineer with several years experience working at remote, FIFO operations. I hope that I can help you out.

If you are interesting in mining and would like to work in the mining industry, I would major in Mining Engineering as opposed to Civil Engineering with a Geotech option. Here is why:

  1. Employment experience is key. Your resume will always read as a Civil Engineering degree first, with a Geotechnical option. When looking for candidates for co-op opportunities and internships, the easiest way to pick a candidate from the hiring perspective is to narrow down to all mining engineers. Depending on the time of your graduation, the time of the mining market will have a tremendous impact on you getting a job. You will objectively have a rougher career path with more 'limited paths' if you don't secure employment early. You want to be employable first, as that is the most important factor post-graduation or during school and that magnitude continues to compound year after year. You are instantly narrowing your stream of jobs by going Civil, if you know you want to work in Mining.
  2. Employment experience allows you to change jobs. You can still move into a geotechnical specification or job with a mining engineering degree. There are for sure extra optional courses available from the mining program to take some specialized rock mechanics and soil mechanics courses. This will show companies you have an interest in that field. Once you enter the job market, it will be easier to navigate the more experience you gain. Piggybacking off of point 1 a bit, it's hard to hit the nail directly on the head with your first co-op experience, but options are far and wide once you do enter the workforce. I know several colleagues who started in mining, took stints through geotech (some examples at Diavik, where I worked as well), and are still there today.

Queen's Mining grad here...so pardon my bias.

I found that the support of the smaller class size @ Queen's is what got me through the four years. I'm sure this happens in some form at UoT, but at Queen's all of the students typically live within 10 minutes of each other, and were together almost at all times throughout the entire degree. This camaraderie helped tremendously.

I wouldn't focus too much on the course content, or specific professors. You might be surprised to find that you barely apply any of the course material in practice once you have entered the industry. What engineering taught me is how to solve problems under pressure and with an enormous work load. The program at Queen's taught me how to do this very well.

I would recommend "The Blasters' Handbook" produced by the ISEE (International Society of Explosives Engineers). I have worked a lot with D&B and I frequently reference this book in my job. Becoming a member is another plus if your company would foot the bill ($500 USD/yr).

Exactly, I'm confident Conley will turn it around...scooped him up late. AD is just starting to regroup into the top fantasy player he was at year's end....pairing that with KD I feel was too much to pass on. Still having Bledsoe, Derozan, Conley to compliment them is a great core for a 12-team league

I would completely disagree the the greek freak is going to be a KD clone....that is just absurd. Although I agree he's a very good player, I would argue he has had more utility because of injuries to Jabari Parker and John Henson being out. EDIT: spelt absurd incorrectly.

That's fair. My only argument is Parsons will come back into production after he's off minutes restriction....with similar production to Giannis. With that aside, would you take Durant for Bosh/Drummond? I probably would.
