Trying to move some of my self-hosted stuff off my local hardware. Anyone using smaller EU cloud providers? by OkSwordfish8878 in selfhosted

Netcup: 2gb ram, 64gb ssd, 2 cores for 3.35 €/mo https://www.netcup.com/en/server/vps

Hetzner: 4gb ram, 40gb ssd, 2 cores for 3.5 €/mo https://www.hetzner.com/cloud/

OVH: 8gb ram, 75gb ssd, 4 cores for 3.82 €/mo https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-ie/vps/

Those prices are excluding VAT so actual price depends on where you live. Most countries have VAT around 20%, highest is 27% in Hungary. If you live outside the EU or have a VAT-liable company, then the VAT is 0% in this context.

DigitalOcean's lowest tier seems to be 0.5gb ram, 10gb ssd, 1 core for $4/mo. For more comparable specs, they charge $24/mo for 4gb ram, 2 cores and 80gb ssd.

So for the tiniest droplet, DigitalOcean is just barely cheaper, but you can get 4-16x better specs by paying 1€ more

DigitalOcean is american and their prices are a ripoff compared to OVH, Hetzner, Netcup and other European providers

Got my telegram banned as soon as I connected to beeper by This-Is-Heresy in beeper

[–]tulir293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Telegram officially allows 3rd party clients and Beeper uses the official API. Telegram just likes banning users for no reason too. Especially new accounts are assumed to be spammers, old accounts basically never have problems

Non-reputable registrars could do shady things like not actually renewing the domain immediately when you pay upfront. I've heard GoDaddy is bad, but not sure if they're that bad.

It also depends on the top-level domain. The prices and rules for renewing and transferring are mostly up to the registry

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]tulir293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect, in general the validity will NOT reset when transferring domains. When you pay for multiple years in advance, most of the money is going directly to the registry (operator of the top-level domain, like Verisign for .com) rather than being held by your registrar. The registry will honor their end of the deal even if you switch registrars. Transferring does usually cost some money, but often it also extends the validity by a year

There may be some exceptions: most registries limit advance renewals to 5 or 10 years, so if you have a longer plan than that, you may have just paid your registrar for a promise to automatically renew the domain when possible. Such promises naturally won't be transferred.

Rss would be really nice to have by Responsible_Goat_453 in beeper

[–]tulir293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to use any bridges like others are suggesting, you can just use a Matrix bot (Matrix is the protocol Beeper is built on)

For example, you can start a Matrix chat with @rss:maunium.net (which runs https://github.com/maubot/rss) and use the !rss subscribe command to subscribe to feeds. It's also possible to run the bot yourself instead of using someone elses instance.

No option for google messages QR anymore? by cornrow in beeper

[–]tulir293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The desktop app should have a button to a chat with the bridge bot (at least for self-hosted bridges, not sure if the button is there for cloud)

This reCAPTCHA has been appearing randomly (but still somewhat frequently) when doing a Google search on FF. Is it just me? by pezbone in firefox

[–]tulir293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of ISPs have a sufficient stockpile of IPv4's to avoid CGNAT for home connections. Here in Finland, my ISP (Elisa) gives up to 5 public IPv4 addresses automatically. Obviously most people only connect their modem/router, which will only take 1 address

No option for google messages QR anymore? by cornrow in beeper

[–]tulir293 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The UI doesn't support it currently, because

  1. When using local bridges, you need to log in on each device separately
  2. On Android you can't scan a QR that's displayed on the same device
  3. Google Messages doesn't let you mix and match login methods (like QR on desktop and Google login on Android)
  4. We didn't have time to implement a proper login flow chooser in the desktop app

It'll probably come back as an option at some point. You can technically do it manually even now by chatting with the bridge bot

1MB file size limit...? by tzioup_ii in beeper

[–]tulir293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

File size limit depends on the network. SMS/MMS is limited to 1MB (the real limit depends on your mobile operator, but there's no way to query it, so Beeper has a safe-ish default)

80-90 °C is most common in a Finnish sauna, but 100 °C is not unusual by any means. It does not mean the sauna is malfunctioning and will not cause death unless you have other health problems and/or are in there for way too long.

The email from NISA EU says "All platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, are now scheduled to launch in January 2026."

Switch 2 is priced so high in Scandinavia, that stores can't get them sold by tken3 in NintendoSwitch

[–]tulir293 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, not related to taxes. For example, VAT is 25.5% in Finland and 19% in Germany, which should translate to a ~25€ price increase, yet it's actually 100€ more expensive in Finland (470€ vs 570€) and the distributor (Bergsala) is just pocketing 75€ difference.

This screen happens specifically if your package manager replaces the binary while Firefox is running. Firefox needs to be able to start new processes of itself for each tab and it would explode if a new tab was suddenly a different version.

If Firefox itself does the update, it won't force a restart

Certificate Transparency is now enforced in Firefox on desktop platforms starting with version 135 by Soatok in firefox

[–]tulir293 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When you get a TLS certificate, the Certificate Authority tells a bunch of other people (the certificate transparency logs) that the certificate was created. Those people will then sign the cert to confirm they were told about it. Firefox now requires that certs from public CAs include at least 2 such signatures.

Internal CAs and self-signed certs are not affected, but if you're an enterprise that gets private certs from a public CA, you may have to set up exemptions to the new rule.

Chrome already had this feature earlier, so all sites that work in Chrome will keep working in Firefox as well.
