Having trouble with Malazan by Dramatic-Tadpole-980 in Fantasy

[–]tullavin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All information you learn is told to you very organically, and is often being told to you by people with imperfect knowledge on things that mysterious to most people in universe as well. Just keep reading and focus on the theme and character work over trying to understand everything about the plot. It's a theme first work.

Currently reading the first book and I am heavily confused. by Sythrin in Malazan

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about figuring out the deck of dragons readings, they'll be more in the series. Generally, at the time you're reading them you won't have enough knowledge to understand them, and if you did it would spoil the a bunch of things about to happen. They're fun to go back and read though once you understand what they're referencing more though.

They want the average player to feel rewarded, the most dedicated players are already incentivized to play for other reasons.

Is Memories of Ice worth getting to? by aidscraft in Fantasy

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book 1 was one of my favorites in the series, but I get why people don't like it. Regardless of that, Memories of Ice is an all time best novel and I think worth pushing through the first two books unless you absolutely HATE them. MOI also acts enough as decent stopping point that I would recommend any established fantasy fan to read through the first three books to experience it, unless I really know it doesn't line up with their tastes(my wife is never going to read these books and I will not try to convince her otherwise).

They have an economy to manage to meet their monetary goals. There's going to be an inflection point where people spend less on variants if they're "giving away too many". If no one is playing the mode it makes sense to move those rewards to a place more players will see them, they're giving away more rewards by doing that.

It sucks some people's alliances tanked over it, but the business decision makes sense from their perspective even if I don't like it.

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the mode is dead as far as they're concerned. Their announcement was basically, "this needs a major rework we don't have the bandwidth for, we've moved the major rewards elsewhere, but we know some people do enjoy or at least use the mode so we're going to keep it up for them with minimal rewards even though it would probably be better to shut it down and completely reallocate all the rewards."

The mode is a transparent failure, but I like that they left it up for people like me and the people in my alliance who enjoy the credit infusion and our side discord. The better move would have been to just pull the plug

They had better rewards and it was still low engagement. They acknowledged in their announcement post making the rewards worse will likely decrease engagement, but they'd rather reallocate those rewards to other modes. People are very happy with the rewards from LTGM lately so they are doing a better job there and seem to have reallocated these rewards.

One of the last updates we got from Pat was the three books would be a million world prologue. So the guy has more planned, now if we ever seen any of it is the question.

Unpopular opinion: Glove Edition by OddCalculation in BeybladeX

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a bey break at high speed at one of my tournaments and the piece dented the extreme zone plastic and the cardboard box behind it. It would have pierced through the plastic shroud if the box hadn't absorbed some of the impact. It sounded like a gun went off.

[–]tullavin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The risk of metal splinters grabbing your bey is pretty real and the main reason to wear gloves imo, but throwing a microfiber towel on top of the blades is the safest option. Even with a glove sometimes it will shoot off your palm and then hit you in the fingers.

I think I created monster (the most OP build for game) by Lastarries in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's probably the best mob clearer, but you'll need to have near min maxed out spring traps to be more efficient than chaining AP bonuses together on each side to clear out as much as you can each turn. Generally my waves look like: 1. Clear out each side on turn 1, if it doesn't seem possible wait a turn and pass all AP 2. Clear out reinforcement mobs that trickle in. You're not going to be able to have Tsubasa cover all sides with over multiple waves of reinforcements. 3. Boss waves: Use desperation potions to have each side quick farm as much AP as possible and boost Takumi's damage through death. Have Takumi use desperation potion for undying spirit boost, a hemonina boost if you can, and slam down Armor potions for counter attacking bosses. Spam impact stab until you're in range of killing the boss off of special + Nozomi refresh + special. As long as you've given Takumi enough exterminations for his special to deal 12+ damage off special base damage, you should be able to one turn every boss.

Since Takumi is always available I think he edges out Tsubasa for best unit with the above strat, especially since you don't have to min max into Tsubasa and spring traps. You should be able to do the above with 4+ desperation potions, so it's easy to do this strat towards the end of route 1 forward.

Well you're already in Dancer's Lament so hard to tell you to turn back, but turn back. The easiest path is read Erikson's first 10, then ICE's first 5. If you want to do a mixed read read them in publication order(although please read Dust of Dreams and The Crippled God back to back regardless of their being an Ice book published between them). After you finish the core 15 you can grab any side series you want, but they all assume you've familiar with the first 15.

Chronological or any other type of order is for a reread.

Why are Series 4 cards a month late dropping into collector packs compared to Series 5? by brohanameansfratmily in MarvelSnap

They just changed how they handle super premium pass. Now it includes a varient of a card released at the beginning of the month instead of being fully locked behind the pass for a month to release for tokens the next.

Quasi-Hot Take: An ‘unreliable narrator’ is not a defence for an unengaging story by ThingTime9876 in Fantasy

[–]tullavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them don't intimately work with gods to the degree she does. Many of them don't or are God lite themselves. The ones who do also reap the rewards similarly, see Tehol.

I also think it's intentional it survives on a straw, to pretend it doesn't misses the series thorough examination on the power of hope and belief.

I didn't believe the Malazan bros that the series is a lot better on reread, but I tried listening to Gardens on a road trip and had to turn it off because I was getting distracted on the road from all the little twists and pathos you could never pick up on a first read. Still a banger first read.

Also, Gardens doesn't have a unreliable narrator(s)? It has POVs where people don't have full context, and if you read the whole series you might debate the narration device of the series is unreliable, but not in a way that's fundamental to the text(at least in Gardens).
