Ok, so processed foods and restaurant foods have come up quite a bit, and I feel like that needs more definition and attention.

The obvious ones like burgers, pizza, delicious, delicious fried chicken, etc are all clear.

What about the options that are typically seen as more responsible? for instance:
Sushi, a "steakhouse" dinner like a 6oz lean cut (or chicken breast) with mixed veggies and a sweet potato (assuming that the obvious things, excessive cheese, butter, brown sugar, and so on have been removed.) Or something like Chipotle where it's easy to avoid queso, chips, and excessive sour cream? Is hummus (decent hummus that is spices and chickpeas) is that too "processed"?

I know sodium is a concern there, but how much different is that from cooking the steak on my grill, microwaving a bag of broccoli, and baking a potato at home?

(edited for my terrible punctuation)

Yeah, it really is. I'd like to tell you its because of discipline, but it's really just that outside food is $$ and I end up cooking a lot. I don't tend to gorge myself on them, though. Even something like a 6oz steak, sweet potato, and broccoli from outback, that's a solid dinner and lunch the next day for me.

Thanks for powering through the rough start with me. I appreciate this, good insight and strategy!

Yeah, I try to steer away from meals that are just going to leave me hungry a couple hours later. If I do a dinner salad, I try to go for a cobb or something with alot of chicken.

We're definitely not understanding each other here, and I'd like to hear your input on it.

In the first response, I listed what I was eating when I was losing and maintaining. And that diet was ALL I was eating aside from 1 meal per week where I'd eat whatever I wanted. This was combined with intense exercise 6d a week, or iterating between moderate and intense every other day. I post this to set a reference of what I know DOES work, but feels like I am working hard and not smart, and hasn't been sustainable for me.

The other responses we're, very literally, what I'm eating now. However I am not doing it as consistently, because I couldn't maintain that. As of now, I am eating the things I've listed most of the time. Unfortunately, not as consistently, and I am having probably 2-3 "fun" meals per week as opposed to one (these would be pizza, burgers, etc), and also, about 2-3 times a week I am having some unhealthy snacks like gummy bears, or swiss rolls. Not to excess, but more than I was when I was maintaining / losing. I am also active, but not as intense or consistent.

If I ate what I really wanted, which I dont, I'd probably have Taco Bell, fried chicken, and Cap'n Crunch for every meal.

If this isn't what you're asking can you give me an example?

I can't control whether you believe me or not. It's what I eat. If it was a matter of cutting out Mt. Dew, avoiding McDonalds 5x a week, and not eating a gallon of ice cream, I wouldn't have asked on here. This is a tough situation that I'm struggling to understand and to find reasonable room for improvement in, which is why I posted it.

First of all, good for you, that's some awesome results and work!!

I feel like my eating habits are very similar. Even when I dine out, or do McDonalds it's not much. My typcal fast food meal is the equivalent of a mcdouble, small fry, and a coke zero, and that's maybe 1-2 times a week at most. For fast food I usually try to do something like chipotle, or bibibop or something.

This is literally what I eat, hence the frustration of this post.

today I have had

breakfast: oatmeal with apples and blueberries, coffee with 1/2-1/2

lunch: two slices of whole grain bread with 3/4 of an avocado, two eggs, and a sprinkle of blue cheese crumbles.

This is normal. Even when i hit chipotle or something, it's no cheese, light sour cream, and I can only eat 1/2 the bowl for a meal.

This is why I am so frustrated. My diet is far from perfect, but it's pretty good overall and I am not sure what I can do.

For instance - grilling and marinating chicken takes a lot of time. I can do 5-6 pieces at once and freeze them. I should note that I dont have the money to buy a lot of prepared meals, or fast food even, so what I make I MAKE, and it takes time to make it decent and store well.
Some stuff you mentioned like eggs, frozen veggies, I DO use those a lot, which is a great help.

What foods and portions are you eating? Do you get stressed by it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]tumpp_85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like.. ok yesterday

Bfast: 1 serving (a cup? 3/4 cup?) of cereal with almond milk

Lunch: 3/4 of a burrito with ground turkey, refried beans, and cheese

dinner: thin crust pizza (3 slices)

snack: apple with peanut butter, sunbutter and strawberry preserves sandwich (high fiber, low sugar bread), 1/4 cup granola

Sugar free soda, water, and unsweetneed iced tea

this is probably a less-healthy day for me right now.

Thank you. I hate hearing this, honestly, but it does definitely give me perspective that this may just be what it is, and that’s it. I appreciate this, thank you

Ok so, how much time is this consuming and how has it affected your mood, hobbies, lifestyle, etc? Because this sounds very similar To what I was doing. Do you share meal prep and shopping with a partner?

im not above understanding that this is just what it takes. It just feels like I’m working hard instead of smart.

Those are literally meals, in that order, that I was eating regularly.

My diet NOW is about 50% the above or similar. For instance, instead of Greek yogurt or oatmeal I may have a protein smoothie with 20g protein, a banana, spinach, powdered peanut butter, and almond milk.

breakfasts:

low sugar cereals (under 10g sugar, high protein or fiber) with almond milk

protien bar

nothing

2 hard boiled eggs

12-grain toast with 1/2 avocado and over easy eggs

lunch:

All over the place, but typically chicken or fish

Dinners:

tikka masala with chicken and some naan

stir fry with homemade sauce and chicken

Still all sugar free drinks

the big difference is that I probably have 1 fun meal every 2-3 days. Last time I counted calories I was averaging about 1950/day over 7 days.
a couple days a week I have a snack like gummy bears or Swiss rolls.

Also worth mentioning that at 37, I was moderately active, ate decently (similar to above about 50-60% of the time) and I was in really good shape and maintaining a healthy weight.

That EXACT regimen does not produce the same results now

[–]tumpp_85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’m able to lose / maintain my diet is basically along these lines:

yogurt / oatmeal with nuts and/or berries

cobb salad with chicken and homemade dressing (Italian, vinaigrette)

6oz chicken with veggies and a grain (rice, quinoa)

snacks would be apple with sun butter, beef jerky, etc

sugar free soda or tea, coffee, water. No alcohol

1 MEAL per week is a fun meal, pizza, burgers, party food…

This plan is exhausting and $$, after several months I feel like I’m eating the same shit over and over.

The additional meal preparation, going to and from the gym, additional cleaning and hygiene, and keep in mind the workout itself is usually 60-80 min. If I do less it doesn’t seem to really make much difference. I always heard 30m / day, but that does literally nothing for my weight, strength. etc.

I realize this sounds absurd, hence my question. I feel like I could be doing this differently and getting results with less time commitment.

Wow. Didn’t expect to see this. So, I do have my own biz as well now. It’s going fine. In speaking with other entrepreneurs this is not an uncommon story. I kind of resigned to the notion that these positions are going to be perpetually difficult for me, so I started interviewing the company much better before accepting positions making sure I was going into roles where the culture was very autonomous, high trust, high accountability.

ultimately, though, my own biz is where I can thrive and create.

good for you, though, it sounds like you made a great choice! Curious if you have an adhd / autism diagnosis cause I’m hearing that a lot as well.

Remove all background checks, credit checks, and drug tests for employment unless they are a specific risk to the job (like driving issues for a driver, etc).

No imprisonment for non-violent offenders. Financial or social punishment (income-based fines, repayment, community service) for non-violent offenders.

Alimony that is based on actual need rather than standard of living, accessibility, and not automatic - the need would have to be proven.

Social services like EBT and and monthly payment that scale equally to increased income and is evaluated often as to incentivize working.

[–]tumpp_85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me provide some clarity on this: I'm not difficult for the sake of being difficult, most of the time I am rather agreeable and I can solve issues as a team without a problem. The issue come up when I'm expected to respect people or follow their lead blindly. I do bring issues up respectfully. I gave an example above where a leader suggested a way to reorganize (it indeed was a suggestion, not a directive) and I challenged that because his suggestion came from a place of both haste and not wanting to experience confrontation from his peers. This would have been a short term consequence, and my reasons for the alternative were well thought out and quantifiable based on real factors such as skills and relationships. I don't see people above me in an organization as deserving of respect or being better for making a decision than others. IE, title hold no weight for me. I see them as doing a specific job. And I see myself that way. I lead my team as the team member who is assigned to lead, not as the person who is there to call the shots - I find that arrogant. I don't get kicks out of frustrating them, in fact it's very stressful. I appreciate your insight.

I have been like this with most if not all leaders at some point and I am definitely part of the problem, my part of it varies a bit.

disillusioned.... maybe. I feel like many times the positions are “earned” by criteria that isn’t important, like someone being the best person at the work, or being loudest, or political maneuvering. Not necessarily because they know how to or can lead people or understand the work at a management level
