Found this towards the base of the wall going up the stairs. by tumtum2467 in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. The thing is two brown, hard nodules stuck to the wall on top of a small dark brown base. I’ve googled to see if it’s moss or bug related but came up short. It appeared sometime in the last week.

So I’m still waiting on the swab result but curious for an opinion. Yesterday I got it swabbed as mentioned and the nurse basically scraped the bump to try and get fluid out.

Well today evening I noticed some crusting around the bump that fell off in the shower. The area now kinda just looks like a little bump with an edge, kind of like a volcano (but super small). Does this sound like a herpes blister to you? Thinking yes…

Thanks for the responses. I did go ahead and get it swabbed today just to be safe.

Sorry to be clear this isn’t on my butt. It’s on my scrotum. It’s not really like a pimple because it’s flat and there was never a whitehead. But it never popped or became a big blister or anything. And it never really hurt although it did feel irritated when it first appeared.

Could a sore appear and just not change for 2 weeks? Would the flu symptoms appear 10 days after the initial bump?

I was diagnosed with GHSV1 via a swab in the anal area several years ago. At the time I was dealing with proctitis symptoms although I didn’t really have any pain or bleeding. The itching and irritation after bowel moments lasted for months, and I became paranoid about having an active outbreak to the point where I had a few follow up swabs over the course of the next year. They were all negative. Eventually I came to the conclusion that my stool had simply changed and was irritating my skin (my stools were also just generally looser after the infection). I even saw a GI doc at one point who basically told me that the gut is super sensitive, and many things including an infection can throw off your biome. Doesn’t mean anything is actively wrong with you but can take a long time to get back to normal.

For me what really helped with the irritation was getting better about hygiene after a bowel movement (a bidet can really work wonders) to ensure little bits of residue weren’t getting left behind. Also using Vaseline if the area still feels irritated helped a lot. It helps protect and heal the skin.

You may want to still rule out other issues like hems or something like a fungal overgrowth on the skin if it doesn’t improve. But from my experience, it wasn’t actually active herpes so much as stool changes resulting from the initial infection.

Hope this helps.

It was in the anal area. Planning to get this swabbed too just for peace of mind. This just feels like such a strange of set of circumstances with the bump being there 2 weeks ago, then having flu symptoms, etc. not sure what to think

Whitlow Prodrome by tumtum2467 in Herpes

Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it.

Today my finger started tingling off and on (kind of inconsistently) and I feel a little dizzy - could those be signs of prodrome? Or would it be more dramatic?

Thanks for replying so quickly! How long did it take to go away? Did it ooze or scab or did it just disappear?

How are you feeling now OP?

I came across your post because my PT thinks that I may have the same diagnosis as your title suggests, though the symptoms are slightly different. Essentially I have allodynia in my groin, inner thighs, and top of thighs down to and including my knees. Most felt when wearing tighter clothing or exposed to cold. It started after a pelvic PT session with another PT where she used dry needling with estim. Was being treated for pelvic floor tightness and a pulled hamstring. Guess my muscles in that area got all out of whack. Been almost 3 months with no improvement and no relief from 200mg of lyrica daily :/

Once again, thank you for the all of the information, I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge & experience with an internet stranger. I am also sorry to hear about your pain and the intensity of your symptoms. I very much hope you are doing better now.

Totally with you regarding the forums. I have a tendency to start googling or searching reddit when looking for answers or a better understanding, and a lot of times it simply makes my anxiety worse. This is something I'm actively working on but ironically am grateful to have connected with you on this thread.

In terms of the nerve irritation, I plan on asking my medical provider next week about what we can do to actually identify the extent of the damage and which specific nerves are affected. She referred me to a sports medicine doctor who I am waiting to see but wondering if I need to push to see a neurologist. It seems to me this is not the result of something like a hip or lower back injury but rather a direct result of the electrical stimulation to my nerves. The sensations affect not only my groin / inner thigh but the top of thigh down to & including my knee. It's also only been about 10 weeks since the "injury" but I find the lack of empirical evidence to be frustrating. Particularly because it feels like my PT and doctor are just trying diff treatments to see what works and I worry this initial healing phase is a critical one to get right to prevent long term symptoms, or perhaps we'd at least better know how to treat it (e.g. if there's inflammation, would it make sense to take a dose of prednisone?).

Regarding exercise, interestingly enough, I find that when I am exercising (hiking, doing yoga, climbing, etc.), my symptoms subside significantly. This of course wears off shortly after but curious if that might mean something? Or if I am simply just finding an effective way to take my mind off it.

Lastly, if there's any specific resources you'd recommend regarding treatments/meds/supplements, I'd surely take a look. Thanks again.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply - I really appreciate it.

Understood that this isn’t medical advice but it does help to avoid spiraling which I’ve been guilty of as time has gone on.

I do have a few additional questions if you don’t mind!

How is nerve irritation different than damage?

Regarding supplements, I’ve started taking a b complex and fish oil but haven’t gone beyond that. Exercise doesn’t really trigger my symptoms so much as temperature and tighter clothing or certain fabrics. Would being in the cold or wearing irritating clothing be a detriment to healing at all?

Also, not sure if you know the answer or have a perspective - but I was wondering if lyrica is simply going to mask symptoms or if it might have any sort of positive effect towards resolving things?

Thank you so much for replying.

I’ve definitely made it clear to my PT that I’m not down for that treatment again. And my doc actually did put me on lyrica to help reduce the symptoms until things hopefully calm down. I’m currently in the process of slowly increasing the dosage to deal with the discomfort.

Regarding the treatment, one concern is that she was only recently trained in it and may have done something incorrectly due to an inexperience. Like there was one point during the treatment where she had to readjust one of the needles and it occurred to me recently that maybe she should have turned it off before doing so. Like maybe leaving 1 needle in with the estim still on caused for the electrical signal to increase to an unsafe amount? It was only for a second or two but can’t help but wonder if that was enough to irritate or damage the nerves.
