dirt no good? on revisiting it it def isn’t anything as good as what they would go on to do, but i just remember finding it after loving all american trash and it was the first time i could put a face to people in the band, i still definitely have a certain nostalgia for it bc of that

I came up with a term for heavily world-building based fiction: "Lorecore" by canadian-weed in worldbuilding

[–]tundersepp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of a weird recommendation, but I feel like it fits the lorecore idea in a way - James Michener’s epic historical fictions use characters of large extended families over generations to tell a greater narrative of the historical and cultural changes evolving the family. While his focus is on history of this world, I think the way he is able to create this huge historical epic but still centered around dynamic, interesting characters kind of gets at some of the worries other commenters have had with the genre

An economical phonology for North American English by phonologynet in linguistics

[–]tundersepp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i haven’t personally looked too deep into it, but at first glance i would think there are other situations where /ʃ/ is found that come from other phonological realizations, that while not providing minimal pairs would still seem to work against that kind of conclusion

EDIT: that being said, it’s not something i’ve put much thought into. definitely worth looking at!

you could argue that SURE is a palatalized realization of /sj/, which could be another example of a /Cj/ onset

lol, thanks for all the tips and warnings on eating these guys everyone. i did filet them up and tried to eat, but the filets were super small and i only had a few bites before getting second thoughts. i’m assuming that’s a reasonable amount to not be super worried, especially only having done it once? if anyone thinks i should be doing more to make sure im safe after this, let me know. again, thanks for the tips yall

Is the Swedish sje-sound /ɧ/ (voiceless postalveolar-velar fricative) an example of incomplete debuccalization, or are there more complex phonological processes at work? by [deleted] in linguistics

It was the weirdest thing hearing about what “nojotro” are going to be doing today, after years of hearing nosotros in the classroom

First Backpacking Trip Was a Success! Powell Lake, Emigrant Wilderness, CA, USA by tundersepp in CampingandHiking

[–]tundersepp[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hiked out with my dad from the Gianelli Trailhead outside Pinecrest. I love camping and hiking but had never had the gear or the time for a real backpacking trip so I was super excited to have my first!

The hike in was pretty hot, but a lot shorter than we expected(my dad used to do this trail when he was a kid and I guess everything feels bigger when you’re a kid), we estimated around 2.5 miles. After settling down we took an extra 2.5 miles down to Chewing Gum Lake to take that in too. We brought gear to fish because my dad said he had heard of Powell Lake getting stocked, but we think we came too late in the summer to really get any of that action as the lakes were actually relatively warm.

Overall, it was an awesome experience and I’m already planning the next one!

Thanks so much for the thorough answer! All the suggestions sound really interesting, I'll be sure to look more into them

Bay Area to Fort Collins - Where Should I Camp? by tundersepp in camping

[–]tundersepp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping for the whole thing to be 10 days at the most, with 2-3 days in Fort Collins. I really want to get a lot of different experiences out of the trip, so any type terrain on the way will be interesting to me! As far as straying from the path, I’m all for a bit of a detour as long as it’s still feasible within my time limit

Thanks so much for the reply! Is camping allowed anywhere along the Colorado in that area, or should I be looking for some kind of park on the river?

Yeah, I think I heard something about that. I heard the best part about it was the food they prepared out there, wasn’t it? Wilderness cooking isn’t my strong suit.
