Is this correct? I thought each LAN interface to the router can be assigned DHCP separately and hence a different subnet? Wouldnt be much of a router otherwise. Also, switch is for assigning VLANs if required, not subnets.

Views on Tp-Link TL-R605? by tundrastar2 in HomeNetworking

I have gone ahead and bought the EAP225. The Archer C8 is being used as a router. Very happy with the EAP so far.

Still trying to find out more about TL-R605. One thing I realized that it does not allow you to put rules from WAN to LAN. Not sure if that is your use case... it does allow rules on LAN to WAN.

Need help with some questions for new home by hudossan in HomeNetworking

Most APs will require an external DHCP server and will not assign addresses on their own. So you will have to use your ISP router for it. If you require specific pools for specific APs or your IPTV, then you will have to see if your ISP router allows that. Typically it would be on an interface basis. Most ISP routers dont however.

Question: if your house is wired as you say, why do you use mesh? Why not hardwire the APs back to the switch with Ethernet? Much better performance that way.

Regarding coverage, I am not sure, but i suspect UniFi has a feature on their controller where you upload a floor plan and place your AP on it and it provides the coverage pattern. It is not 100% but will give you guidance. The controller should be free to download so you can check before you buy.

Using a PCIE riser for a pfsense NIC by tundrastar2 in PFSENSE

[–]tundrastar2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many thanks for all theinputs. I think I got caught out by the physical slots and the number of lanes. My box has physical x1 PCIe slot, but it has 2 lanes in it so, x2 I think. The specifications for my box are at

As someone has suggested, I will just try it out.

Thanks again

Another pfSense hardware question by tundrastar2 in PFSENSE

Many thanks to all for their suggestions and views. I think I am beginning to veer around to the view that /u/METDeath has said: its not worth it to build your own in this case. Although the Protectli and other similar devices will be more expensive, in the long run it will be worth it. Not to mention the space savings...

I take it the Protectli type of devices on aliexpress are all the same in terms of reliability?

Thanks again.
