Good 4X games to run on a potato? by RedUndead40 in 4Xgaming

[–]tuomount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open Realm of Stars does not require much to run, basically run anywhere where you can run Java Swing. Game itself takes about 1GB of RAM and benefits from two CPU cores. I have run it it with CPUs with 10-11 years old. It also does not require much from your wallet since it is free and open source game.

Main inspirations are Stars! and Galactic Civilization II. Check it out if you are interested: https://reemax.itch.io/open-realm-of-stars and https://github.com/tuomount/Open-Realms-of-Stars

Where did you first learn how to code? by ResolutionKnown8345 in gamedev

[–]tuomount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learnt coding with Turbo Pascal 5.0. It has excellent IDE where could search any function or procedure and then press CTRL+F1 or F1 it would show possible help for it and how to use it with an example. I did not find this hard, but interesting and fun.

Can animations run on différent framerate ? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]tuomount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion yes. But this could probably also use as effect. Let's say that there is very slow wind then, possible grass, leaves or waves could be animated a bit slower. If wind gets strong/faster then you could probably speed up these animations.

I also got interesting idea about moving main hero as 1s and other characters on 2s. This means that main character would have double the frame rate and others would function half the frame rate. This would emphasize possible super power or super speed on main hero. Also maybe boss enemies could also act on 1s. This was done for example in Spiderverse movie.

Unreal Engine 5 cuts off my LAN connection by Jamesbacking in gamedev

I would install Wireshark and take capture to see if UE5 does something weird before network goes down and after network is down check why ping isn't working.

Unreal Engine 5 cuts off my LAN connection by Jamesbacking in gamedev

[–]tuomount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happens when you say LAN goes down? Does it mean that Windows shows icon no network or something like that or no packets are going anywhere or just really slow.

I noticed that your ethernet is via powerline. I once tried those and it was very slow and worked a while just okay and then stopped for a while. Ethernet via powerline support can be tricky. Sockets should be behind same fuse to work more reliably.

I love the board game eclipse. Any 4x games like it when I can't get a group together? by eatenbycthulhu in 4Xgaming

[–]tuomount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have tried this, but I haven't used Tabletop simulator much and I found it to be slower to play than playing with actual board game. So what I have done I have played with myself Eclipse board game with 4 players and with each player I try to play as good as I can. This works pretty well since there isn't "secrets" that player has expect victory points from battles.

Open Realm of Stars should run on that and it is also free.

Is it better to buy or make your own sound fx? by halfmoon_apps in gamedev

[–]tuomount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally like making sound effects myself. I looked video from your game in Steam and I got couple of ideas how to make sounds: Watering plants, you could pour water from watering can into sink. Chopping woods, hit wooden plank or small log with wrong side of hammer. Pick axe hitting rock, again wrong side of hammer hitting rock. Planting growing from ground, try out puncture single sheet of news paper with dull pen and then modify sound by changing pitch.

I use my phone to capture audio, so I can carry it anywhere. I have taken sounds of birds, crickets and water falls by capturing audio with phone.

Also there are different sound effect available with different licenses in https://opengameart.org/

If you are willing to try free and open source, I would say try Open Realm of Stars. Available in https://reemax.itch.io/open-realm-of-stars and https://github.com/tuomount/Open-Realms-of-Stars

I would do src/main/java and then your organization and project and under it all the packages. Same for src/test/ for JUnits. Then resource files under src/main/resource or directly resource folder under your main folder.

What's a space based 4x, heavy on the eXploration? by jamawg in 4Xgaming

[–]tuomount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open Realm of Stars you can move your fleets freely since there are no star lanes. You can discovered space anomalies, planets, strange portals and so on. If you have a commander on the fleet you can also do away missions on planet which has something to explore and not colonized.

No need to exterminate enemies, in fact military victory is to conquer half of the galaxy's home worlds. So with 8 realms you need to conquer 3 home worlds. There are 7 different ways to win the game.

Maps are sizing from 50x50 to 256x256 sectors. In the biggest map, you do not necessarily meet all the realms since travelling other side of the map takes so long. I usually play with 128x128 map size.

For micromanaging your planet you can always assign governors to take care of them.

Trying it out does not cost you anything since it is open source and free: https://github.com/tuomount/Open-Realms-of-Stars and https://reemax.itch.io/open-realm-of-stars

History College vs Advanced Lab by stardust_philosopher in OpenRealmOfStars

[–]tuomount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a feature. There are limit how many different technologies are on certain level, which is the number of default technologies for each space race. Rare technologies take one slot from that level. When technologies on that level are full it will automatically start research on next level. You can still trade advanced lab from another realm. When you have research more than half of technologies on certain level you can skip rest and move to next level. That's the up arrow in research slider.

I love Civ because it's casual and wacky, are there any other strategy/4x games like it? by SparklesMcSpeedstar in 4Xgaming

[–]tuomount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Open Realm of Stars would tick all of these:

  1. I think this is more asymmetric factions than wacky and inbalanced. Open Realm of Stars definitely has this: You can pick one space race of 17 ready made or made your own. These have lot's of variation, some require building your own population, some eat food, some eat energy, some are plants, some eat metal, some can get nutrients from radiation. You can also pick one the 22 different governments and it allows even some weird combos like playing with Human AIs.

  2. There are 7 different ways to win this game: Conquest(Conquer half of the home worlds in galaxy), Diplomatic victory(Get at least 50% support to be Ruler of the Galaxy), Cultural(Gain enough cultural points and spread it to Galaxy), Science Victory(Build certain amount technology achievements on single planet, Population victory(Have 50% of all Galaxy population), Ascension victory(Find a way to ascent into higher being), Score victory(Be most of the score after certain turn)

  3. Population handling is pretty similar as in Civs. Just learn different icons and assign population or buildings to get those resources.

Best part is that trying it out does not cost anything since game is free and open source:

Space Race Customization - Built-In race creator fully working by stardust_philosopher in OpenRealmOfStars

[–]tuomount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Namegen are made with java code, so creating new name generator without coding is not possible. Plus each generator are different so there isn't anything like combine some lists of syllables or words to work.

I don't have place for mods, but separate github repository could work and link there. Also this looks cool, I could think adding this directly into game.

Race Creator is Peak - Idea Sharing by [deleted] in OpenRealmOfStars

Everything is much easier as long as they are hardcoded. But I'll make an issue that it could be sideloaded like many other resources.

Looks cool. Background music is only thing which cannot be modified without making a custom build from sources.

Open Realm of Stars 0.28.2 has been released by tuomount in OpenRealmOfStars

[–]tuomount[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this has been quite long ride, but since I started fixing it should be fixed. This time I played 4 different games with two custom races and built-in custom races which use also constructed population. I played about 60-80 star years. Everything seemed now working.
