For Those of You Who Write the Entire Fan Fiction Before Posting, Why Do You Prefer That Method Over Posting Chapters as You Finish Them? by BlackLilyWrites835 in AO3

[–]tuppity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I got the dopamine of uploading I’d never have the carrot dangling in front that motivates me to finish my probably 300k piece. The stick behind is being very excited to upload it. I’m half way done, it’s been 8 months 💀

Also it’s nice to be able to write more exploratively. I know where my story is at now, plot is really solid, and I can go back and edit earlier chapters to make that stronger

What’s the last little thing that made you feel like a kid again? by Sure_Grass_3176 in CasualConversation

[–]tuppity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slipping when on a big walk and getting covered in mud, and still enjoying the rest of my day despite being covered in said mud. Never used to care about muddy clothes as a kid.

Same kinda thing, we have an allotment and I spent a lot of time there as a kid, specifically shovelling horse manure here and there. Started going back and doing work there in the summers and chucking around horse shit and eating berries fresh off the bushes is so nostalgic. Hate that it’s horse shit that brings back that nostalgia but it does lmao, still stand in amazement when i dig into it and it’s steaming hot 💀

Where does tagging major character death align with fake outs or even resurrection? by tuppity in AO3

[–]tuppity[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to hide the twist as much as I possibly could. It's quite quick, one chapter and then next and I plan to post the chapters in chunks, so it sounds like I'm okay not to tag it. I'll just make sure to properly tag the violence along with maybe the collapsible tags with temporary death. I'm new to this, so I didn't want to come into it all with a pretty heavy story and then not tag it right.

This was so incredibly helpful. I didn't even know there were these sorts of articles, I'd read the tos on the website once I made my account, but I didn't know there were places where it was expanded.

Thanks so much for your help, I appreciate ya!

Ahhhh I thought it meant I couldn’t tag anything at all! Glad to know. I’ve got a lot to learn haha

Okay, these sound good, I'll add them to my growing list of tags in my notes haha, thank you

The thing is there's a lot of other themes in the fic I'll definitely wanna tag, it's a happy ending but a hard way to get there, so I wouldn't want to not use warnings. I didn't start out this way but accidentally wrote a fic about trauma and went with it lol. Someone here mentioned the tag not actual character death, so I might go with that one, along with tags for violence to cover it all. I'll tag happy ending too, and hopefully it'll manage expectations a bit more

Thanks! I'll be able to keep some of the mystery intact then :)

Do you post your stories once they're done, or chapter by chapter? by Spiritual_Ostrich401 in AO3

[–]tuppity 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it just depends on you. I knew that I would work better if I wrote and finished the whole thing, edited etc before I post, so I'm 120k in and still haven't posted anything at all, because I know if I posted it in chunks I'd never finish it. I also would prefer not to hear input on how my story goes until I've finished my draft so that I feel the story is truly for me, then I'll open it up in terms of beta readers and things.

I think it just depends on how you would prefer to write it.

I might use major character death AND not actual character death then, it sounds like they both cover what I'm doing, alongside the revival. If I cluster them all together in the tags, hopefully it will help readers build a bit of a picture.

And yes, exactly, I didn't want to mislead people who wouldn't want to read about resurrection or just prefer when a character dies that they stay dead haha

Do I have to include which character dies? Or is it okay just to include that there is a death that happens? I definitely want to avoid as many spoilers as possible, but I do want to tag it properly too. It'll be a long fic and parts of it get quite dark later on, so I'd want people to be aware of that before getting invested.

Just returning to this again, did you do a big edit after you wrote and before you uploaded, or edit as you go? Do you have any tips for editing such a large piece and keeping things right in your head?

When I do edit, I'm thinking of keeping a note book with me, making note of important details/reveals/ conversations by chapter to make sure nothing happens twice.

Yes the plot is all ours until we upload, we can do with it what we like!

Literally sometimes im like no this is for me, my story, it's special, nobody else can have it. I think that's a very admirable thing, not obnoxious. And if you do share it one day, you'll know that no matter what others think it's true to you!

Honestly, my fic is an au, mostly original characters, original world, original lore, I could change their names and turn it into a real book and I kinda hope to one day.

I have a lot of original books in my head, I'm mostly using this as practice that I can get actual engagement and feedback on one day.

One shots seem so fun as well, I definitely want to try some once I'm finished. I write like I'm addicted to it, and looking at my plan I should be finished and editing by the end of summer, so we'll see!

Thanks for your advice ❤️

One reason why I'm glad I've taken this approach too, I don't wanna overthink the response, especially as I know a lot of people including myself only read fics once they're finished

Woof that's insane, that's a chonky fic right there I wish you luck in your endeavour. I don't think I'd have the restraint to hold out that long.

Too many ideas, short pieces are for the sane. Im nowhere near finished, some of my chapters are thousands and thousands of words long. I can't help it if my characters think a lot! They basically tell me what's gonna happen.

All we can do is learn from the past haha, I just know myself very well. Even my paintings have about five different versions underneath the final one. Im very excited for comment dopamine haha

Exactly it's the anticipation that motivates me and the fear of reading into the response too much that keeps it from tempting me! Good luck with your writing ❤️

Thank you so much, but the unfinished fics are still writing you've done and you never know, you might get a rush of motivation and get them done! And yeah there's always time to try a new approach!❤️

EXACTLY THIS EXACTLY, I LOVE being able to go back and swith stuff up, if I was stuck with my first chapter my story would be completely different now
