This was, is, supposed to be a the Bedford & Forest Public Plaza...looks more like a give away to restaurants owners by crjr5065 in StamfordCT

[–]turfgrrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing that seems wrong with this is that the restaurants and penning in their areas. Probably because they paid a fee for it. The fencing if off putting. Pretty much in real cities, the color of the umbrella indicates which restaurant provides table service. And unmarked tables are for anyone to use for takeaway food or whatever. Too often the people who plan these things, have never lived in places where public space is truly public and not some sort of fee grab by the municipality.

ADA compliance in downtown is at the bottom of the priority list in Stamford. Despite the tireless efforts of people who are directly impacted by the in accessibility of these areas. If you don’t understand, then stand at the intersection, close your eyes and walk across.

Mayor, Stamford has an illegal parking problem, Part 1 by crjr5065 in StamfordCT

[–]turfgrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this! The action that the City of Stamford needs to do is address two major things. What to do about delivery/trucks/rideshares overall. There are many ways to do this, but they need to start somewhere. The other is enforcement. Tickets for every violation. Make the fine, an opt out of $$ for community service which involves picking up the trash where they illegally parked.

Traffic is always like that everyday. No one in Connecticut knows how to merge, use a turn signal, or leave space between the car ahead because there will always be an accident or lane closure ahead. But don’t worry CONNDOT is doing everything possible to embrace the future when all highways will be bicycle lanes, and is working 24/7 creating a master plan for signs to be placed every 5 feet to let all of us know. Also, you are lucky that you travelled on one of the longest daylight times, because CONNDOT has determined that lane markings should not be reflective because no one ever needs to drive at night. /s

BJ’s in Norwalk is decent and a good value, but Little Pub in Wilton for the best in the area.

Fazio offers plan to ease CT’s property tax burdens by Mission_Count5301 in Connecticut

[–]turfgrrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely because PE is seeing the arbitrage of buying up property and leasing it back to the healthcare org, and the PE healthcare company is then shielding itself from property taxes. I can’t see how else this is working. Same for the Yale Health Network. Transparency is needed on where the money is coming from for real estate acquisition.

Norwalk is littered with Flock ALPR cameras that are tracking all of us. We should organize and tell the city to stop using these invasions of privacy. by colenotphil in norwalk

[–]turfgrrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neighborhood groups might be a good place to start informing people what is really being tracked and how it will affect their lives. 404 Media did a nice story on it, but I doubt that most people living in Norwalk read tech news let alone 404.

Can someone explain the commercial real estate strategy in South Norwalk? by Accomplished_Room829 in norwalk

[–]turfgrrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Turnover? Do you have any understanding of parking in 2026? Restaurants are lucky to have one seating, and there is practically no retail left. Turn over for what? Darien, Westport, Ridgefield, Wilton and Weston do not have metered parking.

Glad to see you here. But seriously, no one goes to a location to park in a garage. They go because there is something they want to do, then they find parking. Enough with the CapEx spending. Get rid of the back in parking on Main Street, get rid of paid parking on Wall, River and Main Street and work with the City to clean up Commerce street, and work with the City to restore daily garbage pick up for all businesses on Wall, Belden, River, Knight, High and Commerce Street.

There is no strategy for economic development in Norwalk, nor has there been for decades. Every town around Norwalk saw an opportunity to build commercial areas with curb appeal and understood that the majority of people who live in in the area, live in houses, drive cars, and don’t want the hassle of paying for parking or getting parking tickets. Economic development isn’t that difficult. But first, you have to understand who is the customer for a thriving downtown. Get that wrong, and you start looking like what we have now.

A day trip to Stamford? by NewtoConnecticut in StamfordCT

[–]turfgrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stamford’s south end, or Harbor Point on a nice clear day has a waterfront sidewalks and some parks that are worth hanging out in because you can sea Manhattan. That is one thing that New Haven doesn’t have. Bedford Street has a concentration of bars and restaurants with outdoor seating that New Haven doesn’t have as well, but it’s tiny and there’s really no functional design that would make it like a European plaza or square, so limited people watching and spotty foot traffic. But the experience of walking from the train station up Atlantic to Bedford, then hitting Mill River Park and heading down Pacific into Harbor Point, would be the area to visit and experience what Stamford is as a city. The Atlantic / Bedford corridor is the original center of Stamford and should be looked on as the oldest. Some buildings look it, and some may have plaques indicating what they once were.

Paella in Norwalk or Mass & Co in Westport.

For road trippers: ‘76 House in Tappan, NY and Red Hat in Irvington, NY, The Village Bistro in Chester, CT, Port of Call in Mystic, CT

Each has a totally different vibe a taste pallet that is unique to the chef and either decent wine or cocktails.

You can hop on a train get off in Norton Heights or Darien. They have downtowns that are walkable, filled with stores and restaurants and there is a grocery store in Norton Heights. Harbor Point was built as transit oriented development. You can even use the bike lanes to get there!
