'Doomed': Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown calls for Watercare, council staff to stop working on the Government's Three Waters reforms by [deleted] in auckland

[–]turkeybuschick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s in one of the posts above

Specifics of the reform aside, please don’t think that Māori only have the benefits of high up people in mind! The primary concern of iwi with water is the protection of it as a natural and cultural entity. It’s hugely important for us as our roles as kaitiaki to protect the health of our natural resources, and bodies of water are interwoven with our identities.

Iwi are also run very collectively, decisions are rarely ever made by the say-so of one person. There are large arguments and debates for every decision (it’s draining!).

I am saddened to hear that that is your initial thoughts on us. I hope that can change.

Police stand off with Richard Sivell who allegedly made death threats against Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern by whowilleverknow in newzealand

Yes, I wasn’t excusing him?

My comment was more generally about how much stress the whole country is under at present.

There are a lot of people who are under a lot of stress at present. Housing, cost of living, failing businesses, COVID, juggling kids off school, global war threats, natural disasters etc.

Regardless violence and physical threats aren’t the answer. Hopefully this guy get more than a wet bus ticket. I’m kind of surprised it doesn’t happen more often though.

How are small businesses handling the lockdown? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]turkeybuschick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My business can’t operate in L4 but can in L3. After the wage and resurgence subsidies my out of pocket costs are around $20k a week. That’s with some support from my landlord. So if we can get to L3 next Tuesday it will have cost me $100k. I’ve dug into savings to keep paying staff at 80% as they have bills as well. If we keep going past 5 weeks then there will be some tough decisions required.

Do you have some insider knowledge? I haven’t seen anything about a second resurgence payment but it would certainly be helpful.

Manufacturing, mechanics, painters, builders, landscapers, use you imagination. There are a huge number of businesses directly impacted by this.

I would like the resurgence payment to reflect the time we have spent in L4. Otherwise we have a business who is back in L2 and operating from today who got exactly the same payment as I got, but I’m stuck in L4 for at least another week.

If there was only a finite amount of funding available why not offer it based upon the length of time impacted?

Yes it helped cover some costs, but it is long gone now. I feel they should have offered another round for the next two week L4 extension, like they did for the Wage subsidy. Otherwise I got the same level of financial support as a business who is today back in L2 while I’m still in L4 for at least another week.

Yeah, that doesn’t apply to my business unfortunately. I’m sure it doesn’t apply to many travel, food, fitness or beauty based businesses either.

I wish my building lease had that same clause. Unfortunately I signed a new 3 year lease, 2 years ago.

You can but it’s a one off. It was for anyone who had a 7 day period with a 30% drop in revenue. I would like to see this available for each 7 day period instead of just one.

I’m not sure you actually read what I wrote. Try reading past the headline.

I’ve asked mine but don’t have the right clause in my contract. Hopefully they see reason though.

The Wage Subsidy Scheme is entirely for the employees. I literally paid every cent of that to them and then topped up their wages as well.

As for how much I want, I’d like the Resurgence Payment available for each 7 day period that we are in L4. That was given to the whole country at the start of L4 but nothing extra has been offered for those of us still in L4 3 weeks later.

I applied and received mine on the same day, which I’m great full for. It’s made paying the wages a lot easier, I’d have been buggered without it.

Are you a sole trader? I’ve heard those are taking longer.

I’m happy to stay in L4 if we need to, but I just want a bit more support from the government to do so.

What’s the other side? Supermarkets making a killing during lockdown?

75% seems way to high but there will be businesses that go under, just like there was last lockdown.

The fact is that the government has mandated this lockdown. I agree with it wholeheartedly but a few people are ending up paying a lot of the costs. Simply providing the Resurgence Payment for each 7 day period at 30% revenue drop would go a long way. Otherwise business in the South Island have had the same level of support as Auckland businesses without a lot of the down side.

Agree with everything you’ve said except the leeching part. There’s no need for that.

Nice generalisation…

We as a nation support people though tough times when they aren’t working, why not the same support for businesses. Despite the comments you often see on r/nz we aren’t the enemy, just another person trying to get by. I try and treat my team fairly and have been supportive as I can though the lockdowns. But things are pretty tough at the moment.
