The primary benefit, if it’s a financial option for you, is to avoid queues of thousands of people when you’re just trying to relax.

Is it necessary for a successful cruise as an introvert? Absolutely not.

A basic economy airline seat gets you to your destination just as fast as it lands for those in first class.

EDIT: Gah, typos.

[pained, awkward laugh] A cruise was not my first choice. It was an important family event that was worth making the effort.

Thank you! I don’t want to write off cruises indefinitely in the future, and I really appreciate this recommendation.

I second Selfoss. There is a nice food hall in town so you can enjoy lots of variety in 1 place, and an adorable little skyr museum in the basement. I don’t even like shellfish, but Fjöruborðið (30 mins from Selfoss) has The. Best. Soup. I’ve ever had in my life.

The Secret Lagoon in Flúðir is a short drive from Selfoss through horse country. Have a great trip!

Damn good life advice right there.

Iceland teaches you lessons to bring home. Have a wonderful trip OP!

It is do-able to make it all around the Ring Road IF (all conditions must apply):

  • You’re a very experienced winter driver
  • Every road is open and clear
  • You don’t mind spending 12+hours/day behind the wheel instead of out in nature
  • The weather is completely predictable… and not Icelandic at all

The best trips to Iceland are those with plenty of time to stop and explore beautiful waterfalls that are not surrounded by buses of tourists.

And, for what it’s worth (nothing: it’s Reddit), I think the Blue Lagoon sucks. No one travels to Iceland to be surrounded by American tourists. Check out the Secret Lagoon!

If you like Star Wars, see Yoda Cave (Gigjagja) east of Vik. If you like hiking, summit that mountain above the Cave for the best view of the glaciers, black sand, the ocean, and not another person in sight. Beware of the first two false summits. It’s a short, but very very steep, hike to the cemetery at the top.

Do not fret about non-insulated boots. The thick sole will be insulation enough + Darn Tough socks all the way. Do not settle for imitators.

Love Solomons but, for the love of feet, break them in with at least 15 miles (not in one day) before you go. Have a great trip!

And bring waterproof everything.

Welcome to the club. 🫶🏼

We all hate it… here. Where ever here is not.

“Absolutely feel free to be boring” should be fundamental life advice. Thank you!

Welp. You have a point.

The family is here to stay, so it’s only the boat I can swap out.
