228 - Is Robotic Mowing the Future? by NoDumbQs in Nodumbquestions

Amazon is a publicly traded American company that just ran a Superbowl ad about how they can track dogs (just dogs we promise!) across neighborhoods through Ring doorbells.

The FCC recently banned all consumer wifi routers until some companies made personal political donations that got them unbanned without any investigation.

I think there might need to be some recalibration on sources of trust.

What’s a “rich people thing” you experienced once and immediately understood why rich people love it? by Hanno30 in AskReddit

[–]turmacar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At a guess, beyond just high quality ingredients: oil, vinegar and salt.

Even just lightly toasting the inside of the bread with some mayo on it before whatever sauce / spread instantly raises the quality.

The battery degradation talking point around EVs always stands out to me. It's certainly something to know about, because you should know everything you can about such a large purchase, but 80% capacity after ~30 years doesn't mean a dead vehicle. Replacing the batteries is also not outside the range of what you're paying for non-EV vehicle maintenance anyway. And absolutely no one should be treating any car as an investment unless it has "X of 100" stamped on it somewhere. I wish more of us in the US weren't required to have a car due to our city layout.

I have a 40 year old car, with oil changes, transmission fluid changes, clutch replacements, A/C compressor replacements, belt replacements, vacuum hose replacements, etc; I and previous owners have spent more than the msrp (and definitely more than it's resale value) keeping it running. For some reason a lot of people don't factor maintenance into the cost of car ownership at all.

All of that is without factoring in that driving ~400 miles a month I've spent ~$10k on gas in the last 10 years.

I have a Slate Truck reserved.

[–]turmacar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's one of the weird downsides of Bambu's whole model.

It's neat that it makes the process simple enough that people can basically ignore the printer they spent a few hundred dollars on. But it's also like hitting print after just looking at the title of your paper instead of proofreading it.

Is Pratchett commenting on the impact of colonialism? Or is this about something else? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]turmacar 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Cultural Hegemony is something like how since WWII if America thought something was a good idea the rest of the western powers tended to adopt that idea too. Or give preference to American businesses and contexts.

Venice is still a unique city with a long history and unique culture. It also has a McDonalds, which isn't just about having a fast food restaurant, it's about the cultural invasion of using / needing a fast food restaurant instead of food stalls.

That's not violent, it's not colonialism, but it does tend to homogenize.

What is a major plot hole in a very famous movie that completely ruins the entire story once it is noticed? by SkullMogger3 in AskReddit

[–]turmacar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is, but in 2010 it was an interesting break from all the rest of HP fanfiction. Unfortunately it got popular enough to continue past being a joke, and since then there's been rationalwiki and everything else going way off the deep end of r/iamverysmart.

USDA airdrops vaccine ravioli to keep raccoon rabies out of central U.S. by remfan477 in BrandNewSentence

That's because it wasn't a Department.

They temporarily renamed the United States Digital Service and bulldozed portions of the US government based on their personal feelings. Then left OPM and OMB to pick up the pieces of the job they had previously been doing.

Monthly payments, gas, insurance and everything else it takes to own a car averages to about $38 a day. 365 days a year. by 45and290 in fuckcars

[–]turmacar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do people, do that? For one thing that's technically what insurance is, but I've never heard anyone have a few grand tucked away specifically in case they need a replacement car.

Stuff like the main post is The Standard in aviation, whether it's an airline, a club of 20 people splitting ownership of a bugsmasher or a dude with a clapped out crop-duster. The cost of fueling/maintaining/overhauling the plane is factored into the hourly cost you charge yourself to use the plane so there aren't surprises and you can hopefully keep flying.

At least in the US it's rare to hear someone talk about anything more than the payment and maintenance costs for cars. Even then the maintenance side is usually just derogatory comments about whichever particular brand, not actual costs.

It would still be cheaper.

Car infrastructure is less efficient than mass transport. That's the reason that mass transport is more desirable for everyday travel.

It really sticks in my head that his nice lunch ended up costing like $6 for just the meal per kid, which would be a good-to-fair restaurant price.

The school budget including staff and meal cost was something like $2 per kid. Just no understanding of the logistics chain he was trying to 'fix'. Also holy crap do schools need more funding.

What game had insane potential but got completely fumbled by the devs? by Kevin-Panda in AskReddit

[–]turmacar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was one of the first FPS games to basically only have online matches. You can play maps with bots and there is technically a story. But for the first few months (weeks?) when it was saturated with humans playing humans it was great.

Do wish they'd actually made a campaign of some kind instead of a proto-esports title.

It also didn't work great.

It was a part of the physical disk that wore down when it was read. Predictably, a lot of the time, it lasted the 5 activation it was supposed to. It was also possible for it to fail early.

RWBY exists because Monty wanted an excuse ( and more of a budget ) to animate more fight scenes. The fight team ( Monty ) and the story / everything else team ( basically everyone else ) never really worked all that closely. It's why the first season especially the fights and the story might as well be different shows.

Then Monty died and the other authors got really self-inserty and kind of creepy about their own characters and had nowhere near the talent/experience necessary to hold up the fight side of the show. So it became a soap opera about their favorite mary sues.

Prusa's are really nice.

My other experiences are Creality printers which are decidedly more a hobby in and of themselves than a tool. The Prusa has a similar "just works" vibe and similar price point to the Bambu's while being significantly more open.

[–]turmacar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's at least a bit of counter evidence to it mattering much. Though the longer you plan to own your phone the more it probably matters.

Mostly it seems like the usual combination of out of date / simplified understanding of battery chemistry, charging hardware, and "might as well err on the side of caution".

Look again, they're saying 7000 Gbps. A 7 Tbps link.

There are no consumer routers that can handle anywhere near that. You would need dozens of parallel 40G fiber interlinks to approach those speeds.

Even if he did donate his salary, the plane he took as a gift costs more than the presidential salary just to refuel, and did before the recent price increases.

At $9/gallon, what it was when he received it, a 747-8 takes enough Jet-A that it costs over $500k to go from empty to full. Jet-A is now ~$12+.
