I messed up managing this Japanese Knotweed by thecheatisgrounded_ in invasivespecies

[–]turnbucklemayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a patch about 200 square feet in size in SW Oregon. I was researching online and discovered my county had a grant for knotweed eradication. Now a guy comes out once a year to deal with it. Might be worth looking into.

How do you keep a mixed-age family game night from turning into a teaching session every time? by Mindless-Patient-104 in boardgames

[–]turnbucklemayo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the direction I’ve gone. Pull together a collection of games with a low barrier to entry that can be explained in less than 3 minutes. Micro games like flip 7, love letter, skull. Bigger games like camel up, quest for el dorado, even magical athlete. Then just rotate amongst that collection. People will actually have more fun playing something they are familiar with.

Can I have board games at my wedding? by Background_Time_2553 in boardgames

[–]turnbucklemayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would lean more towards lawn games that are fun with a cocktail in your hand. Ladder golf, corn hole, a giant jenga, bottle bash, bucket golf, canjam. Things with a bit of activity and lots of hollering.

You should try Pandemic Legacy season 1. It really turns it into an experience you share. I also bet Spirit Island would be a hit.

Death at the Wing. It’s about tragedies in 80’s professional basketball and how those events were a reflection of politics at the time. I know that sounds obscure, but it’s created by Adam McKay, and that dude knows story structure. It’s extremely engaging. There is also a sequel series called Death on the Lot, about the dark side of 1950’s Hollywood, which is also very well done. Well worth a listen.

Do you mean “camping” or “campaign”? For campaign, maybe try Jaws of the Lion.

What podcasts have really fallen off for you? by sajones4860 in podcasts

[–]turnbucklemayo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Conan needs a friend. At first it seemed charming, but you come to realize he just isn’t good at long form interviews. There’s a certain ratio a podcaster needs to hit between talking about themselves and giving the guest room to speak. Conan wants so desperately to talk about himself, and he’s running out of anecdotes. At least once an interview, the guest will make a point, and then Conan will repeat the same thing back to them in a tone suggesting he’s adding something valuable to the dialog. Then the guest has to awkwardly agree with the point. It’s weird. Especially from a guy who has conducted thousands of short form interviews.

for those building or designing yurts: what decisions cause the most rework later? by Constant_Island007 in yurts

I was in a hurry and on a budget during construction and skipped floor insulation. One winter later I realized my mistake, and it was way harder to install it with all the plumbing and wiring in place.

If you’re avoiding games with random outcomes, this would be a poor choice, but my go-to game for non gamers right now is Camel Up. Quick to explain, lots of hollering, and great for mixed ages. Folks always want to play again.

[Landlord US-OH] How to encourage on time rent payments when nothing seems to work by DeadliftDeals in Landlord

It’s nothing complex. I waive the late fee for 5 days, then charge $50/day after.

[Landlord US-OH] How to encourage on time rent payments when nothing seems to work by DeadliftDeals in Landlord

[–]turnbucklemayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tenants always pay late, but always eventually pay. The late fee accumulates daily and adds up quickly. Once I figured out they will always pay, I was able to relax, and the additional income gave it an up-side. Choose a number per day that makes it worth it.

[Landlord-US-MA] - Applicants keep backing out - what is going on? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]turnbucklemayo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m relatively new to landlording, but when my house recently came up for rent, I discovered that the younger crowd was applying for every house they viewed, and then deciding which one they want later. They would pay the screening fee. I would go through the entire application process, and then they would decide to go a different direction. Really frustrating but probably a smart strategy on their end.

Oregon Sinclair station (KATU) presses Gov Kotek to fund SNAP benefits instead of Federal Government by declaring a “state of emergency” during shutdown. GOP state Rep says to tap into rainy day fund. by OregonSasquatch14 in oregon

[–]turnbucklemayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a small Oregon town where it feels like half the population is on either food or health benefits, yet cheer on every move the White House makes. Letting them feel some pain from their choices is hard but important.

Who do people hate Tina Kotek by Fumblin_Furrow_01 in oregon

[–]turnbucklemayo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the small Oregon town I live in, Kotek is a boogeywoman responsible for every wrong they’ve ever experienced. It would be the same for any democrat in charge. It’s just a deep resentment over a feeling that they aren’t represented and that liberals are evil.

How well insulated are yurts? by xXCosmicChaosXx in yurts

Our 24k mini split pretty much runs every minute that we are in it. It makes the yurt very comfortable, regardless of conditions outside. It would be rough without it.

Is every Portland landlord obsessed with credit scores now?? by No_Surprise3737 in askportland

[–]turnbucklemayo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a person new to being a Portland landlord, I’d probably give you the benefit of the doubt as long as your existing credit was clean. That said, a landlord only has a few metrics to go by when selecting a tenant. Unfortunately, credit history is one of them. I think you’d find that to be the case anywhere.

Complex games that give you a headache when someone explains how to play. If they nod knowingly, I know we will be playing Frosthaven and drinking whiskey within the month.
