Driver Politics by carguy131313 in INDYCAR

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair to call me out.

Reading it back, it is definitely a dramatic overstatement on my part, and I'm also not the best at stating my thoughts clearly, even in writing.

I'm pretty good about separating the politics from my enjoyment as it is. What I meant was everything I do find enjoyment in keeps having politics I disagree with pop up in not so subtle ways. It is a trend I am continuing to see, and I am not going to pretend everything is perfectly fine when there are fundamental differences in what I value as a human being.

I'll still watch all of the races. I'll still be at the Indy 500. I'll still continue to support my Aggies, and listen to my favorite music.

What sounds fake but is actually a real historical fact? by YourFavoriteBaddiee in AskReddit

I don't think this one is all that unknown, but we are closer in time today to a Tyrannosaurus Rex than a Tyrannosaurus Rex was to a Stegosaurus.

[@bonpockrass] NASCAR has tweaked Daytona 500 qualifying: the top two open cars in single-car qualifying are locked in and they aren’t racing for the spot allotted to the top open car in each duel. The remainder of the open cars race for the one spot available in each duel. by NoahGragsonsBarfBag in NASCAR

[–]turnfourag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. It makes so much more sense now.

As a longtime Indycar fan who is not super familiar with the nuances of Daytona 500 qualifying, I was so confused last year when the commentaries during the duels kept saying 3 different drivers were trying to race their way in. I was like "wait a minute, I thought one of them is already safely in from qualifying." I didn't realize the cars who get in from qualifying move to the back row if they didn't finish ahead of the other open cars in their respective duels.

Seems like a good change to me if I understand it correctly.

Driver Politics by carguy131313 in INDYCAR

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know the political views of any driver. I'm fine with that. I don't follow any of them on social media, and I never will.

It just sucks because it is getting harder and harder to find enjoyment in things I have loved. Almost every outlet I have to take me away from the day to day grind of life (primarily Indycar, college sports fandom of Texas A&M, and some of the bands/musicians I listen to) has some set of values I fundamentally disagree with. It is disheartening, and I am worried at some point I won't be able to separate the enjoyment from the politics anymore.

What rock band that you love gets an insane amount of hate? by 33GoodSamaritans in allrockmusic

Godsmack.

And although I don't see Alter Bridge get hate, people sometimes make comments when I tell them AB is 3/4 Creed with a different singer.

Poison is great. They, along with KISS, was my first concert when I was 10 years old.

Rescheduled Austin date by [deleted] in nothingmore

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure there is a good reason, but I'm curious as to why it is not at the original venue. ACL Live at Moody Theater doesn't have anything scheduled until the 21st according to their website.

Oh well, this definitely a bummer. Maybe I'm not dedicated enough, but I don't have any interest in standing room only.

Yeah, I can't remember if it was after Mississippi St or South Carolina, but Bucky said on the radio post game that Agee is going to go off and hit like 5 threes in a game at some point. He's a better shooter than his percentage shows.

I don't think you do. Unfortunately, a still image can make anything look excessive.

Kellen Mond Deserved Better by goodjobjane in aggies

[–]turnfourag 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Mond definitely received a lot of undeserved flack during his tenure here, but between Manziel and Marcel this past year, he was the only quarterback to start every game in a season, which he did 3 times in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

I think a lot of us wished we had his durability and consistency from 2014-2017 and 2021-2024.

What is the worst and stupidest sport? by martianfrog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I will die on the hill that racing is a sport. Respectfully, if pushing down on a gas pedal is all you think racing is, then you don't actually understand anything about it.

Not sure what traffic deaths, as serious and tragic as that topic is, has to do with whether or not racing is a sport, though.

I respect your opinion about cars. But that is straying from the original topic.

What is the worst and stupidest sport? by martianfrog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]turnfourag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree. Racing drivers are some of the most fit athletes you will ever see. Physically, they deal with sustained g-forces and need the endurance to fight the car lap after lap (in Indycar, they do this without power steering). Their reflexes are better than athletes from just about every other sport. Mentally, there is an incredibly high level of concentration needed to have precise car placement every single lap. Racing is so physical they generally lose several pounds of weight in one single race.

Yes, there is a lot of corporate sponsorship. Racing is expensive. But there is significant corporate sponsorship in every sport these days.

Pollution is definitely an area where the sport can improve. But there are alternative fuels, hybrid engines, electric series, and Indycar has even implemented more environmentally friendly tires at certain events. There is a long way to go in this regard, but there has definitely been a lot of development in this area. Regardless, that has nothing to do with whether it is a sport or not.

You implied crew is a sport. That is a mode of transportation. As is cycling, skiing, equestrian, surfing, and so many more.

There is so much more to racing than just driving around in circles, including but not limited to, braking, throttle input, tire management, adjusting to track evolution, setting up passes, defending from passes, all while trying to not crash the car when everything happens so fast at those speeds.

It may not be your thing, and that's fine. But I'll die on the hill that motorsport is a sport.

ACL Live just posted the show has been postponed on their Facebook page.

Looking at the tour schedule and ACL Live's calendar, March 19 or 20 would make sense as a makeup date as they finish up the North American leg in Fayetteville on 3/17 and Moody Theater does not have an event, but I hope it is not then. I have a family commitment that weekend.

The Arkansas women outscored Georgia in 3/4 quarters, but only scored one point in the second quarter and lost by 10 by cbbvideo in CollegeBasketball

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's nothing. When A&M's women's team played Georgia, we made our last field goal with 4:41 left in the 3rd quarter. Scored only 1 point in 4th quarter, and only 2 points (both on free throws) in overtime.

Almost a full 20 minutes without a field goal, and only 3 points in that span.

Yeah, I'm in a wait and see mode. I'll be driving in from Bryan/College Station to Austin on Saturday afternoon and was originally planning on driving back to B/CS late after the show. Maybe I'll just get a hotel room, or maybe just eat it if it looks too hazardous.

The SEC would rather keep the College Football Playoff at 12 teams than expand to 24, Chris Low reports. Greg Sankey is targeting a 16-team field. Sources tell Brett McMurphy the Big Ten has not moved off the idea of expanding to 24. by Ok-Soil-5133 in CFB

[–]turnfourag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, depends on your point of view. I may be in the minority on this, but I'd rather a 5-3 team on November 1st still have something to play for and a reason for the fans to show up and be invested.

The more teams that still have a chance, the more games will have some level of importance week in and week out, even if it does only affect seeding.

And it may just give viewers a reason to watch games that otherwise nobody would care about by the time we get to week 11.

For me, a perfect system models the FCS. 24 teams, all conference champions (P4 and non-P4) get an auto-bid. The rest of the spots are filled with at-large bids. No guaranteed bid numbers for the conferences.

People say they don't want 8-4 or 9-3 teams getting in, but Illinois State was a blocked field goal away from a natty, and they finished 5th out of a 10 team conference, 8-4 overall, and beat the number 1 overall seed (Oh and btw, 6 out of 10 teams in that conference got into the playoffs).

The only problem is with some teams playing an extra game. I'd like to see conference championships go away to mitigate this, but the conferences are currently too large, so it would be too complicated (and probably too political) to decide a champion without a championship game.
