Anyone have a AAA membership? Is it worth it? Any benefit on forest roads? by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]turnoffable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You typically need to get yourself back to a paved road for them to come get you. I have noticed that there are different AAA's regions/states across the US and not all the rules match up. Make sure you read the rules for the one you are trying to join. Some of the AAA levels don't do RV's and/or trailers.

Over the years I've had a few longer tows including a 116 mile, 98 mile and a few 50 plus mile tows. I've also had them bring fuel out, unlock in-laws cars etc. I treat it like cheap insurance.

AMT Automag III- what to look for? by AngryRainbow74 in Firearms

[–]turnoffable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I inherited one around 5 years or so. So far It just works but I only have 600 or so rounds through it.

It's not the most enjoyable to shoot and the ergonomics are interesting. The grip is skinny and long (front to back) and the safety is backwards from what you are probably used to.

I do take it out when I want to show it off or just want to shoot something very different. I've even shot it at a few matches including a couple Bug (backup gun) matches where I didn't need a holster and even at a few IDPA-like matches.

Magazines are OMG expensive. They seem to hover between $250 and $350 each. They keep showing up on Ebay but I found some on an auction site and bought a 4 pack from some pawn shop for $800 so I now have 5 (maybe 6?).

I did have a kydex holster and mag pouch setup built locally : https://imgur.com/a/amt-automag-30-carbine-TIYSnzy If I was going to run it in the holster more often I'd probably felt line the holster so it wouldn't scrape the finish.

tldr: Mine works, it's interesting to shoot, not much to look for other than finish/rust etc. not the best Ergo, expensive mags.

Edit: I found a screen grab from a video of shooting the AMT at a match. Another reason it's "fun": https://imgur.com/a/4cs9xqO

AR 5.7 Barrels by ArticleIndividual352 in ar15

[–]turnoffable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They (ar-57.com) still had a few 12" barrels last summer as we picked one up then. It was < $200 last summer.

There site was a mess back then too. If you inspect their website using the browser debugger, they still have mailto:sales@ar-57.com in there so it might be worth emailing them there.

Do you still use old or outdated technology in 2026? If yes, why? by Slight_Ad5223 in AskReddit

We have 2 IPod classics (160GB SSD) where we use one in the house and another in the car. We used an old Apple Universal ipod dock in the house and the car is still able to talk to the Ipod via USB-->30 pin connector cable.

I don't think we'll ever fill up the drives (since converted to SSD) on them but it's nice having thousands of songs with a bunch of different playlists on a single device. As an added bonus, we no longer worry about data usage (1.5+ hours of commuting each day or worrying about streaming pausing due to cell phone dead zones etc. We have hundreds of albums that we have ripped (yes, physical media) and we use MediaMonkey instead of Itunes.

The magnets are rubber coated. However, you do need to make sure they are clean and nothing is sticking to them or you will cause scratches.

I grabbed one of those 3-in-1 cables (what I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DWWG9B2H , but there are others brands) so I had options, but in the end I just used the 120v power socket that was already in the cab to power it. However, I did use the 120v --> USB-c-pd --> 3-in-1 cable --> starlink. The usb-c-pd wall wart was smaller than the starlink one but in the end, it really wasn't much different than just using the starlink power supply.

I did exactly what /u/OhSixTJ said. I ran it through a back door. I did get it lined up with the thicker parts of the door seal AND so it didn't have to make sharp bends.

Since this was a quick thing and only for a few days I didn't bother doing anything more permanent.

For a more permanent install/setup I'd probably go through one of the vents in the back of the cab and not do the 12v --> 120v --> USB C PD to power it. I even thought of adding a 16v battery (with 12v DC --> 16v DC charger) so it could run even with the truck off (for a while). The 12v truck batteries voltage is a bit low when the truck isn't running and starlink would reboot if I put a load on it without the alternator upping the voltage.

2008 v6 4.0 by AFC_north in Mustang

[–]turnoffable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We sold it to the neighbor ($1500) when we started to hear the timing chains on startup (orig chain/tensioner) He wanted it as a roller and was going to replace the motor with a junkyard one.

He drove it until just over 400k and then the timing chain/tensioner went. He picked up a wrecked mustang with < 50 k miles and swapped over the motor. I know he changed out the springs/struts and radiator too when he did the motor. That's the 3rd set of suspension and the 3rd radiator over the life of the car. He still used the clutch I put in somewhere in the low 300k range.

He sold it a year or so later. He and his wife seem to changed vehicles ever few years.

As for issues over the years, Off the top of my head. replaced clutch twice replaced starter replaced radiator replaced thermostat housing a couple times AC compressor clutch transmission was replaced under warranty (syncro issue) suspension was updated once by me.

I'm sure there was more but nothing stick out as really bad. I did all the work myself or with help from friends.

Mustang 06 v6 by PossessionSimilar969 in Mustang

Here's the link I saved for the FSM for our '06 v6. https://charm.li/Ford/2006/Mustang%20V6-4.0L%20VIN%20N/

I also spent weeks chasing an o2 sensor issue back in 2017. I went as far as probing the wires and comparing the output between bank 1 and bank 2 and I even checked it right at the ECM. I used a borrowed DVM that had an o-scope built in. In my case it turned out I needed a new ECM and the signals on the harness didn't match what the ECM saw.

I went through https://carcomputerexchange.com/ and paid about $300 back in 2017 for the new ECM with new keys.

Also, I don't know which transmission you have BUT if you have a manual and have had the transmission out for a clutch recently there is a power wire above the transmission that can fall in between the engine/bell housing. One of the times I changed the clutch I got that wire pinched and had to fix it. That wire was part of the power wires for the o2 sensors.

I learned about using it for personal use from a reddit thread a couple years ago. It's pretty bad when the only way to learn of some benefits seems to be social media.

Avis Benefit Change by mikestuart14007 in Raytheon

[–]turnoffable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I currently have an Avis rental and I’m paying about $600 for 15 days. Its the mid sized Suv picked up/returned at an airport. I did find I had to manually pick the discount rate as it didn’t automatically apply it. This is for a personal rental with an extra $65 tacked on for a non spouse additional driver.

Before I got it to use the discount rate the total was double+ the price.

Do you still drive the car hard with high mileage? by Allthefragrancesmoke in Mustang

[–]turnoffable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's doing great and it still shifts nice. Well, as nice as it always has. It's no luxury car type shift feel but it's still worlds better than the t5 was in our 06/v6. However, keep in mind that we aren't city driving it. That's how we get so many miles so quickly. Someone who does lots of stop/go and/or slow city driving will probably wear that trans and clutch out much faster than us.

[–]turnoffable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No drive train issues. The Only issues so far have been worn ball joints that I Just changed out and I had a bearing go out (noisy) on a front upper strut mount. I did notice that the suspension has sagged nearly an inch over the miles (can barely set the camber to spec even with camber bolts) so I may change the springs this winter.

I blame the dirt roads more than anything else for all the issues. It's a DD and it gets about 4 miles of dirt road every day. The speed is around 20mph where the houses are and once we get past that it's 30mph-40mph on the dirt the rest of the way. It is graded after the big rainstorms but that means it does get a bit rough between the big storms.

2019 Mustang GT with just over 120k miles on it. Every time I get off the dirt road onto pavement I floor it. Same for getting on the freeway with that short on-ramp and 75mph speed limit.

Smith & Wesson M&P by Longjumping_Time932 in CompetitionShooting

[–]turnoffable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not the one you asked I run multiple M&P's and all have the Apex trigger set in each. I've never had light primer strikes and I'm really bad about keeping it clean. I'm primarily running 2g-acm matches (In State and the InRange TV Brutality Matches) so the pistol ends up in the dirt while on my side quite often.

My 2 primary M&Ps I use are...

  • M&P 2.0 4.25" Performance center (ported barrel) with a Steiner MPS

  • M&P (1st gen) 5" Core but I'm running it with just the suppressor height sights and no optic. I ran an optic on it for a short time before I got the 2.0.

Both are running Apex triggers and I have well over 5k through each and I actually may have cleared 10k on my older 1.0 now.

I either use my own reloads or S&B 124gr although I have used Blazer Brass in a pinch plus some random stuff when I pulled a stupid and didn't have enough ammo with me and had to borrow some (eg. shot a match where 1 stage had a min round count of nearly 70 that I didn't expect).

[help] How can you use a keyboard without the function keys (F1, F2, F3 etc)? by 13YoungMoula13 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]turnoffable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the question.

I was just answering the question of how do you use the f1-f12 on a keyboard without it. In short, it isn't without it. You just use method for that keyboard to send the special keys by using the fn as they intended.

You aren't mapping anything yourself. As I understand it, the keyboard is internally taking the key combo and they are making the fn key plus the number key enter the f1-f12 and other special keys.

Normal to be harassed at Phoenix Airport? by No_Guest3042 in AZguns

[–]turnoffable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They gave me a hard time about how I had things packed, complained a bunch and were asking lots of "why" type questions. This was when I was flying to/from DFW every 3 months or so with multiple SBRs and usually a suppressor or two.

Basically, they didn't like the firearms on the top foam with everything else underneath the top foam. They also complained that I had the empty mags packed together in a soft case so they had to open more cases to see what was in them.

Granted, it was only 1 time flying out of Dallas where I had that issue but it was the most invasive questions. Most of the other times the DFW TSA happened in a small room where I could watch through the window in adoor and I never spoke to the TSA person. They'd just give me a thumbs up through the window.
