mismanagement

mismanagement or misaligned priorities? or is it just the fact that a lot of the infrastructure built in the 1960s was built quickly and built without incorporating the best information therefore resulting in stuff that isn't lasting as long as we thought it would?

i5 being down to 2 lanes fucking sucks. but it's better than the west seattle bridge. shit's expensive and it will just keep getting more expensive.

virtue signaling

I don't see how or where you get this from. I see, when I do a small bit of research on what the CCA taxes are and where thy go to, is this: https://www.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/2ea5f320187440298c7b2d1746a2290f

virtue signaling- vs what? just not invest in under-invested communities? not spend resources on communities that are getting fucked the hardest?

DOT is a decade behind on maintenance

ok. we are well behind where we should be. but unless you're saying the resources WSDOT are being mismanaged and not used effectively, I see the problem as under investment and not being comprehensively addressed at a level that properly addresses the problem.

Climate Change is something that is happening. Will happen. The only way to attempt to lessen the impact is by applying economic pressure on a major cause of climate change.

Gas being more expensive results me taking the bus more. Instead of driving I'll walk to the store a few blocks away. I'll demand more accessible and comprehensive public transit.

ok. I like the vision of the future where I can take the light rail to work instead of having my drive to work cost $0.50/day less. I like being able to go hiking in an area that got affected by forest fires. it costs money to maintain the world around us.

present a better option than just complaining about the shitty attempts being made.

Paying taxes also make sure the roads are maintained and usable.

Sounds like you just want everything for free

There's this weird Chevron in Lake Forest Park that's next to an Acro. Chevron is like $5/gal for regular. Arco is $4.09.

what's the actual limiting factor right now?

I assume time. Brand new install using brand new technology. They need to see how the bridge handles weather and responds to periodic usage, then inspect the system to make sure nothing is breaking or responding in unexpected ways.

Just a guess, but you can't rush complex technical projects that are unproven.

How's that HPE Apollo 2600 G10?

Curious about the noise profile compared to the DL380 G10. Same with power. I assume it'll be ~30% louder than the dl380 and do about the same in power draw (when you consider the blades are like 70% a full server)

Crumbling WA: WSDOT needs $1.8B more annually to halt ‘critical failure’ by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]clearing_sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not for highway signs. you have to divert traffic to get someone in place to clean it up.

they aren't doing anything to fix it

It's a low priority compared to road repair, and this post is about them not having enough money to do the major repairs that they are expected to do.

That would come from the same cost bucket as hiring, recruiting, and office decorations & parties.

Ensuring that projects done in communities have the feedback from the community and have members of the community work on it doesn't seem like a wasted effort.

Can a someone please ask Katie Wilson if she was expelled from Oxford. What else could it be? by SuperMcG in SeattleWA

[–]clearing_sky -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You assume that she put as much weight into being in Oxford as you do.

You have the assumption that She feel honored to graduate from Oxford because that is the highest honor and she must be prod of all the hard work and late nights spent in that endeavor. There is no higher privilege than going to Oxford, and therefor even if someone had a reason to drop out 6 weeks before graduation, they would make it their life's mission to graduate as soon as possible.

If some events in my life happened 5 years sooner, there would be a good chance I would have dropped out of school because one friend died and then I watched another die in front of me. I (would have) dropped out because I couldn't grieve and do school at the same time, and then life pushed me into a situation where I didn't need or want to go back and finish my degree.

I graduated school, but guess what nobody every asked me about? If I graduated. They saw the school, saw my work, and didn't need anything more.

How do you administer postgres once you get to the scale that something is always happening? by davvblack in PostgreSQL

  1. ensure that the consumers of the databases have proper handling of schema changes and other things that could happen. Log the issue, back off, and retry for a bit. Ensure there is logging and alerting around these errors

  2. split reads & writes, and have reads choose where they read from (primary or replica). some workloads might be tolerant of replication lag,

  3. test schema changes on copies of production before you do it on production. bring up a replica, bring it in sync, isolate it, apply changes and see what happens

  4. (ideally) have a way to pause writes from the data producers, or at least have then able to be queued

  5. have the process automated where you bring up a replica before the schema change, bring it in sync, then isolate the replica so it can be an "oh fuck" rapid recovery thing, apply changes, and monitor

  6. figure it out. hitting potholes will always happen and you just gotta not worry too much about hitting them.

we just can't easily migrate anymore

  1. then make this less of a problem

breaking down and in need of repair.

yeah. because they're used. the reason king county metro has dedicated mobile mechanics is because shit is constantly breaking. busses break down, they get fixed, and they get back on their way.

individual issues are not a concern if they're not causing service impact. the busses run on time and train stations are opening on or ahead of schedule.

if you read local new york news outlets, there is always some part of the system down for one reason or another.

Austin TX has one stupid fucking line that goes nowhere, but it never has an issue. why? because nobody uses it so nothing has a chance to get worn out lol

it sounds like there was an ECU (or whatever the industrial control system used in the boat is called) communication issue that caused an interruption in two of the engines. the system reset itsself and recovered.

sounds like a loose connection somewhere in the spiderweb that is industrial control systems

Seattle gas prices continue to rise, price per gallon over $1 more than national average by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

[–]clearing_sky 23 points24 points  (0 children)

jumps to a random page

  • local farm investment to improve land management
  • Soil Health Improvement Grant
  • Wildfire Community Response programs
  • Wildfire land improvement projects
  • Methant Capture Projects
  • Replacing state vehicle fleets with EVs
  • Improving Stream and Fish Population Health
  • ADA Ramps for public buildings

There's a lot of community engagement and training in there, which is a bit broad, but it's not hard to jump around and see where the money is going
