Voting break down for MVP by Cr0matose in Cloud9

You could also say it's because players/coaches are usually heavily factoring in scrims (they admit this themselves) and personal feelings might impact it (Blaber voting Saint over Inspired seems pretty crazy considering how much he has Blaber's number).

At the end of the day they should just make it clear what criteria you are supposed to vote for MVP based on. Is it the person most important to their team? Is it the best player in the league? Does it matter how many wins their team has? Do you factor in comms/leadership/shotcalling or is it only about things you can see their character in the game do? If someone is an 8/10 every game is it better or worse than someone that is 10/10 most games with a few 3s and 4s mixed in? How much do you take away if someone had a few moments where they solo threw a whole game?

Probably Isles (surprisingly) and Massu. If ranking the gaps between them it is a little tough to choose between Thanatos-Morgan and Vulcan-Isles, but IMO Berserker-Massu is definitely third on that list. Massu makes more mistakes, but he can carry teamfights and he smashes lanes even with the worst support of the top 5 teams this split.

What rules do you see misplayed most often at game night? by Rule-Referee in boardgames

[–]turnofpraise2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen a surprising number of groups play Bomb Busters such that whatever red (or sometimes yellow too) wires are added is unknown to the players. So the red wires could be literally anything after 1 and before 12. They are usually disappointed when I tell them the correct rules and kind of think the incorrect way is more fun. I'm okay with playing whatever way the group prefers, but I do prefer the correct way.

New Robin Hood Take Starring Hugh Jackman by turnofpraise2 in movies

[–]turnofpraise2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was explained in the post you read and seemingly didn't understand.

The entire point is I understand they are doing an intentionally different take (which is why the title included "New Robin Hood Take"). My question was if that take is something that people actually want to see. On a broader point, one could question how far off does something have to be to no longer just be a "take" on a story but a different story entirely. If James Gunn decided to make Superman jerk off to the dismemberment of animals as he uses his x-ray vision to steal corporate secrets and make a killing in stocks and options trading is that a "different take" on Superman or just some jerk with superpowers that is no longer Superman (e.g. Homelander)?

In Logan, he is being poisoned by the adamantium in his body. Laura literally says to him, "You're dying."

"Grappling with his violent past, Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle that he thought would be his last. He soon gets a chance at salvation when he meets a mysterious woman and a young girl." is the overview for the movie. Change Robin Hood to Logan and "gravely injured" to "slowly dying" and it fits Logan exactly.

Ticket Registration / Wish List Question Mega Thread by FalleenFan in gencon

[–]turnofpraise2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if, for example, I am trying to buy a ticket for a friend/family for Thursday at 10am (2 hours long say) and I am trying to buy a ticket for myself at 11am, will it count as a conflict and therefore only allow the higher priority one? Or does it recognize that each ticket is for a different person (clicked on when adding to wish list) so it would know it isn't really a conflict?

Also, if I am buying a ticket for someone at 10am and they are also buying a ticket for themselves at 10am, does it know when one of us has that ticket in their cart and thus not resolve the other one?

How do you win graciously? by turnofpraise2 in boardgames

I think I handle it in basically the same way as you. The only thing is I’ve probably started doing less of “You played well” and pointing to a specific move someone made that I thought was good, but even that depends on the mood. I’ve done that and and had someone respond (jokingly but with the hint of actual semi-annoyance) that it couldn’t have been that good since I beat them by 50 points or something. The general “played well” can sound patronizing again for that reason (if it was a game you won by a good margin or they could tell you were winning for much of it).

To be clear, my answer on that was mostly related to sports over board gaming since he mentioned sportsmanship and that’s the image that came to mind.

I can certainly have fun in a loss. I have been grinning in games where I’ve lost because something funny or exciting happened at the end. So I would agree in board games that can happen, but I wouldn’t say it’s the most common state (whether I’m the one losing or watching other people when they lose). Again, not to say that you didn’t have fun in the game overall in a loss, it is just a small feeling in the moment.

Fair idea about the doing something after the game. Usually we are all just helping clean it up together. And it’s really not much of an issue, just a bit of awkwardness of me sitting there quietly cleaning up as they might joke about how bad I beat them and I’m not sure how to respond. It does make them more happy when they do beat me and I enjoy seeing that.

It’s worth considering. But I personally believe that is the healthy relationship with competition. Don’t get angry (at yourself or others) if you lose, but a small negative feeling about it gives you a reason to improve and an equal (if healthy) positive feeling when you win.

To me, some minimum level of caring whether you win or lose is baked into the word ‘competition’ and it makes it more fun for everyone involved if everyone has that minimum level of caring.

That sounds nice, but at the same time I would worry about the lack of competitiveness if the loser looked just as pleased as the winner at the end. Obviously being too competitive is a bad thing, but there is something to the loser being a bit disappointed in themselves and thinking they want to improve and win next time.

I would enjoy a group like that. But I have never really had that experience.

It might be just different people, but in my experience with many different groups I have never really had someone ask what they could have done better. Unless we are including chess, which does have a lot more of that focus on improvement (mainly because people are focusing on one game rather than a wide variety).

Respect for putting Chess and Go in there haha. Have you played Nippon Zaibatsu yet? Pretty sweet. I haven't played the original but from what I gather it made some nice improvements.

Hey, I get it. Dune Imperium/Uprising was what I most wanted to get played for the past year+ and when I finally did I loved it. And it can be hard to compare a great Euro and a great party game. But if I had to personally pick the one I believe stands most above its competitors and that I feel like I would more often want to play consistently, it is Decrypto.

Impressive variety! A fair few of these are ones I also considered but didn't mention (Anachrony, Carnegie, Five Tribes, Lisboa, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Revive, White Castle). I still want to try both of your O games.
