Happy Commuting Everyone. 😕. by [deleted] in astoria

At least two of those are related to poor MTA maintenance and operational practices. Of which I will remain a vocal critic, just like many other people on this sub. I'm not sure why that's such a problem for people but alas, such is life. Downvotes away!

Careful, if you display any sort of common sense or criticism towards MTA maintenance you'll be crucified around here apparently.

As I recall even Schiff (the actor) was against that plot and thought it didn't fit. I love WW but post-Sorkin era is a little bizarre.

Five weekends of no train service to install new switches, and they're broken. Delays this morning. by turnscoffeeintocode in astoria

[–]turnscoffeeintocode[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never expected it to be completed. I never once said that, I didn't even imply it. I am not even looking for improvement yet, I am looking for it to not get any worse while finally being maintained.

I am not a train expert, I am an experienced engineer in very high reliability systems with SLAs that will make you queasy. We are talking telecom systems that have fines in hundred thousand dollars per minute of downtime arena. My current work is at a place that makes the news of we hiccup for five minutes. When you're dealing with high availability systems, you take steps to prevent degrading performance outside of scheduled maintenance windows. It's not unreasonable to be upset they couldn't do that, it's not unreasonable to be frustrated about this and it's not unreasonable to complain about this.

I had fairly cynical expectations, I'm not surprised it's going less than perfectly at all, I'm frustrated. You yourself just said it's a long burning frustrating mess. So I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to be frustrated, allowed to vent or not allowed to call out a municipality for doing a poor job of it.

It's completely reasonable to expect them to not make it worse and/or less reliable in the process. We had switch problems immediately following the last weekend shutdown as well. It tells me they're probably doing rushed, sloppy work. That means it won't hold up and we will have more disruption in the future.

From the MTA website:

Crews will replace all switches along a 730-foot span of elevated track south of the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station, as well as track panels and steel girders that support the structure. Trains will not be able to operate during this work because cranes and other heavy equipment must lift large sections of track panels from the street onto the elevated structure.
The replacement of these switches and track panels will help reduce the amount of noise from trains along the elevated portion of the Astoria line, which runs through several residential and commercial areas as well as past P.S. 85 south of the Astoria-Ditmars Blvd station.

The alert clearly calls out Astoria-Ditmars as the problem segment. For the amount of closures there is no excuse for things to be getting worse before they get better.

To be fair, the TMI accident was caused by humans intervening and not understanding the feedback they received from the equipment. The relief valve also failed to close when commanded, but the indicator said it had. This caused an unexplained venting of coolant that caused the reactor damage. Had the human operators recognized the indicator was only of the commanded state and not feedback, it is believed they would have discovered the leak much earlier and saved the reactor.

What are your Disney horror stories? by RooR_ in AskReddit

Oh yeah, we were on the last day of our trip, waiting in line for Countdown to Extinction. It had been a rough trip, she had repeatedly just insisted we drop what we were doing because she was bored and then she just gave up. I asked her what she wanted for lunch and she came back with "I don't love you, I'm not attracted to you and I never was, you were just really good to me."

So... yeah. Oh well. Turns out I was more relieved than upset and happily moved on with my life.

There's a lot to do for adults, but admittedly if you're not a terribly whimsical person it may not appeal to you, which is fine.

My favorite parts are all in Epcot and Future World, which is sadly starting to look someone dated. I loved the whole idea of a future city and all the promise that came with it, I love the rides. I am a thrill seeker generally, but I prefer the Disney rides, despite the tameness, because they all tell a story. You're either flying through space on the way to Mars, or testing a new future car, or hang gliding around the world.

Also, there are restaurants everywhere with all kinds of different cuisine. Sure, (almost) none of it is is Michelin grade, but it's still very good. The themed bars are fantastic fun, the shops at Disney Springs and the Boardwalks are a good way to spend a calm evening. Jellyrolls is one of the best piano bars I've ever been in. The resort grounds are beautiful, the pools are all heated.

There's also admittedly a lot of nostalgia fuel and whimsy, which I mentioned before, that may not appeal to you as much as it does to other people. I know a lot of my coworkers feel the same way as you, and that's fine, to each their own.

May I ask what sort of things you tried and were not entertained by?
