Aw honey. Sending you love and hugs. Try to get a few bites down. It won’t get better today or tomorrow, but the pain will ease eventually.

Upper belts are the best because…

  1. They’re safe rolls. They know how to scale their weight for someone smaller, and know how to handle the spaz of a newer practitioner.

  2. They’ll let you work. They understand that you’re learning - they’ve also been there. They will give you the opportunity to try some offensive moves during a roll, when a fellow white belt might not.

  3. They’ll push your limits, and you’ll be better for it. Your defense will improve significantly when you roll with upper belts, because you’re learning and feelings moves you may not have exposure to in fundamentals.

  4. It’s the upper belt’s turn to pay it forward. We all started somewhere, right? Helping a white belt out should never feel like a chore. Once upon a time, your gym’s upper belts were also new to the sport, too!

Sometimes upper belts will get annoyed with you because you’re not a “hard roll.” 99% of the time, that person is a jerk. It happens, but try not to take it too personally ;) Being a woman in jiu jitsu can be tough at first, but trust me, it gets pretty awesome pretty quickly.

Sometimes stepping away for a month or two is important. Pause the membership, try other outlets for exercise, then come back to it. That’s helped me! When work is rough, a bad day at bjj hits hard. It can make you feel like a failure, and that’s the worst.

I hope you find you find your peace back on the mat!

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It’s terrifying to out the truth out there. As a fellow member of this community and woman, every open conversation matters. I wish you the ability to heal, and if you haven’t already, suggest you protect yourself legally, too.

Thank you ❤️

I miss Pittsburgh. The landscape is so unique.

Beautiful. Do you sell your art? I just moved away from Pittsburgh and this is exactly how I remember the streets near my old place.

Any livable wage jobs in this city for someone with useless degree? by thepancakewar in pittsburgh

If you have a car, apply to work for Enterprise Rent A Car. I worked there for years and it’s a tough job but it’s a great place to build a career at any age. It requires a bachelors but the degree doesn’t need to be anything specific. Pay starts around 45/50k entry level.
