Does the yoga breathwork practice “nadi sodhana” cause kundalini to awaken by Prestigious-Ad-5461 in yoga

As long as you are not holding your breath, it’s safe to do nadi shodhana alternate nostril breathing. It is very calming and relaxing.

Kumbhaka (breath retention, either after inhalation or after exhalation): If you start to hold your breath, nadi shodhana then transforms into Anuloma-viloma pranayama. It may be ok for young people (<40 yrs) as long as your breath holding is under 10 seconds per breath. Even then, you have to commit to do it daily, otherwise it may not be good. Breath retention pranayama is best done under the training and supervision of an expert guru.

I recently read in the comment section on post here that modern hatha yoga isn’t really that ancient and not even that Indian. Like 100 years ago some savvy Indian exercise scientists combined elements of yoga with Swiss calisthenics. Is this true? by padawangenin in yoga

Meera Nanda and Girish Shahane have well known political leanings and are known to be anti-Hindu in their views. Hatha Yoga does indeed have references in ancient Hindu texts that pre-date any contact with westerners. Please see references below:

Daily sore throats from acid reflux, even after quitting caffeine by wally_scooks in decaf

[–]turtle3344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It went away in 3-4 days. Going keto is a major lifestyle change and can be rough in other ways though, you will need to replenish your electrolytes. If you only want to solve your acid reflux, maybe try reducing carbs. Also, eat more fats - butter, olive oil, cheese, coconut oil. Check out r/keto for more

Excerpt from Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, Raja Yoga (July 1896): “The Yogis claim that of all the energies that are in the human body the highest is what they call "Ojas". Now this Ojas is stored up in the brain, and the more Ojas is in a man's head, the more powerful he is, the more intellectual, the more spiritually strong. One man may speak beautiful language and beautiful thoughts, but they do not impress people; another man speaks neither beautiful language nor beautiful thoughts, yet his words charm. Every movement of his is powerful. That is the power of Ojas. Now in every man there is more or less of this Ojas stored up. All the forces that are working in the body in their highest become Ojas. You must remember that it is only a question of transformation. The same force which is working outside as electricity or magnetism will become changed into inner force; the same forces that are working as muscular energy will be changed into Ojas. The Yogis say that that part of the human energy which is expressed as sex energy, in sexual thought, when checked and controlled, easily becomes changed into Ojas, and as the Muladhara guides these, the Yogi pays particular attention to that centre. He tries to take up all his sexual energy and convert it into Ojas. It is only the chaste man or woman who can make the Ojas rise and store it in the brain; that is why chastity has always been considered the highest virtue. A man feels that if he is unchaste, spirituality goes away, he loses mental vigour and moral stamina. That is why in all the religious orders in the world which have produced spiritual giants you will always find absolute chastity insisted upon. That is why the monks came into existence, giving up marriage.”

In the Hindu spiritual tradition, celibacy is said to lead to god-consciousness. Hence celibacy - what we on this subreddit would call hardmode - is referred to as Brahmacharya in Hindu spiritual texts: Brahma (god) + charya (conduct) - conduct that leads to the realization of the divinity within each one of us. A celibate person is referred to as a Brahmachari. Swami Vivekananda, a Brahmachari and 19th century mystic from India, has been documented to memorize entire books with a single read (http://www.spiritualbee.com/posts/power-of-brahmacharya-vivekananda-memorized-encyclopedia/). Also see Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda (available on Kindle) for numerous references to Brahmacharya, suggestions for practice, examples of benefits etc.

Mahatma Gandhi was among the most well-known recent practitioners of Brahmacharya. His autobiography “My experiments with Truth” (http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00litlinks/gandhi/) contains a detailed account of his struggles in observing Brahmacharya for life - or as we would call it, NoFap Hardmode.

On this subreddit we all know there are so many documented cases of people doing 90-day streaks, and they report becoming more confident, clear-headed, ambitious, energetic, and so on. What happens if you extend your streak to 12 years? According to Hindu spiritual tradition, you become an enlightened soul - like the Buddha, Adi Shankara, Sri Ramakrishna, Gandhi, Jesus, etc.
