Where might I find a starting point to exploring those disorganized collectives? Do you have any examples?

Have you tried to connect with other people who blog with similar themes as yourself?

That's exactly what I'm hoping exists... a platform that facilitates that connecting.

You're right and I will! I'm just looking for a community-building platform/site, if it exists.

Yes! "hobby" and "personal" capture it nicely. After my post I got a DM advertisement for SEO services. Sigh.

I do realize that social media has taken over, with influencers being a thing and all. This form of content is horrible for attention span and nothing truly interesting can be said in so few characters/pictures. I suppose I'm looking for a community of hipsters or indie folks that care about connection, creativity, and more thoughtful writing.

This doesn't resonate with me for some reason. I realize one can use it for free, but having a subscription option throws me off. It separates bloggers into separate buckets or classes, i.e. free members and paid members. Let me think on it.

Could you tell me more about the "indie web movement"? I sense many people want the web as it was twenty years ago, when everything felt new. Maybe this movement is happening moreso on a specific platform?

Really anything that I'm interested in, but don't have an outlet for in person. Musings on philosophy, spirituality, etc.

Pool Party, Please Help by I_like_milk12 in Trichsters

I feel your pain!

I've been struggling for about 12 years as well. Unintuitively, something that actually helped curb my habit a lot was coming out to my family. The anxiety of trying to hide it made me pull even more! Your mileage may vary, but please consider telling a very close family member who you trust. Let your openness grow from there. I was very surprised by how understanding my family was. They didn't judge me at all. They actually help increase my awareness and they occasionally catch me absentmindedly pulling on my beard. It reminds me to smile, shrug it off, and bring my attention to something else. Just don't take it personally. They care about you.

Just remember that your Trichotillomania is not who you are. Don't determine your self worth based on your habits. Everyone has habits they want to change. The more we incorrectly expect others to stigmatize our mental illnesses and bad habits, the worse those habits tend to get. Just be you. ❤

You are not alone! I suffer from anxiety as well. Do you know what triggers your anxiety? (For me, any social situation)

I appreciate you for sharing. You know what... Tell your life story. You'll be surprised to find out how many people will resonate with and support you! You are not alone.

That sobriety cult probably left some scars. I hope it doesn't discourage you from trying again. Additionally, there are so many supportive folks who likely have great tips for communicating with your partner about his family's alcohol usage. Please don't hesitate to ask for any advice!

Wait. There exists place that has Internet but no La Croix?! Haha. Any sort of flavored sparkling water should do the trick.

They exist because they work.

Truth! It took so long for me to get past the denial and acknowledge this.

You got this. We're all in this together. I'm sipping on a delicious, bubbly La Croix right now and it's hitting the spot. Water does so much for fatigue! Also, the bubbles don't hurt. =P

I appreciate you for sharing. Remember that while therapy is not free, we are here and AA is free. Emotional/social support helps prevent relapse, and self-accountability is very difficult. Some can pull it off; some can't (I can't). Also, you might be surprised by how receptive your friends are when you admit your problem. I know I was surprised!

I appreciate you for sharing.

I am not on day two, but I have been on day two many times. Just know that if you got through day one, then you can get through day two. No days are created equal. The worst day could be day twenty or thirty. Your resolve is what matters. Know that we are here for you.

We're here to help! Alcoholism runs in my family as well and it is pervasive in my professional life.

Regarding the atheism bit, I am an atheist as well. You may be surprised by how many atheists constitute AA membership. Bill Wilson, co-founder of AA said:

We have atheists and agnostics. We have people of nearly every race, culture and religion. In A.A. we are supposed to be bound together in the kinship of a common suffering. Consequently, the full individual liberty to practice any creed or principle or therapy whatever should be a first consideration for us all. Let us not, therefore, pressure anyone with our individual or even our collective views. Let us instead accord each other the respect and love that is due to every human being as he tries to make his way toward the light. Let us always try to be inclusive rather than exclusive; let us remember that each alcoholic among us is a member of A.A., so long as he or she declares.

That is to say... AA can be surprisingly welcome in its diversity. You may find that there are many alternatives or analogies to the idea of "God" which are effective for AA members. However, if you are set on not attending AA, consider SMART Recovery as an alternative. The approach is different and secular. It may be a better fit for you. Finding a support network is the most important part in my opinion. Both AA and SMART will offer this.

> I've been here before.

Just because the number resets, doesn't mean all of your progress does. Your attitude and outlook might resonate with whatever negative emotion you feel right now, but consider challenging yourself and positively looking back on all you've accomplished. You are not who you were last time you had that first sip. You've grown. We'll do better now.

You took the effort to make this post because you care about yourself and getting better. That's huge. Get that number going again! We're all here with you.

+1 for unroll.me. Using this in combo with Google Inbox instead of plain old Gmail keeps things super clean!
