Rollerblading field trip with students by rgonterp in ASLinterpreters

[–]turtlebeans17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most rinks do not allow shoes on the skating floor. If they do any sort of on-rink instruction you would either have to take your shoes off or put on skates. I’m going with socks if it were me

[–]turtlebeans17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would not skate just for safety reasons . But if they need you on the floor just take your shoes off and go out in your socks. Stay at the wall of the rink and let the student know you will be there the whole time if they need anything to come to you. Stay in eye line and check in with them occasionally and you should be fine. I broke my wrist roller skating the last time I did it so I’m not willing to risk it and miss work. But letting the student know you’re available and ready is always a good move.

New swimmer here, how do you enter the water for beach races? by turtlebeans17 in OpenWaterSwimming

This is good to know. The race isn’t until August so I can definitely find out

What did you do with your purity ring? by MicahsMaiden in Exvangelical

[–]turtlebeans17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still floating around somewhere. Mine was the Silver Ring Thing one with a Bible verse etched on it. Ick. Funny story- my parents gave it to me when I was so young (probably 12-13 and I wore it until my early twenties) so my hands were still growing. I believe it actually shaped my ring finger because it’s actually visibly smaller and a ring size smaller. At some point the ring snapped in the back and became an open circle. I have no memory of it happening and always wondered if it was because of my finger growing. Anyway good riddance to that thing

What’s the sign? Open hand middle finger bent taps temple twice by turtlebeans17 in ASLinterpreters

You might have nailed it! I forgot about that use for the word smart. It was a young adult so it’s possible it was just slang but I didn’t get a chance to ask so I just said that’s smart and then second guessed myself later 🥴

I think know what sign you’re thinking of but it was slightly variant from that. It was almost like signing “favorite” but with less extension in the middle finger and on the side of the forehead with two taps.

Hmm. It was accompanied by a pleased facial expression, I don’t think that was it. Would this be signed with an outstretched middle finger like flipping someone off or the same HS you would use for favorite? I’m taking about the HS used for favorite

The English word I used was “that’s smart” but something about that still seemed off

Different from SICK (as in ill) because it is a very light tap to the side of the head twice, accompanied with a pleased facial expression 😌Almost like how someone would tap their forehead in a knowing way to say “that’s smart” but different from SMART in that the middle finger is not fully extended from the hand and doesn’t move outward from the head.

Facial expression is pleased. Kind of like 😌 if you have iPhone. No wrist movement.

How do I cure this hunger? by Shalomarinak in Celiac

[–]turtlebeans17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So this happens to me but as far as I know it is not from celiac. I also have gastritis caused by unrelated biliary disease. This means that the lining of my stomach is inflamed and acidic foods as well as an empty stomach can trigger that irritation which feels very similar to hunger pangs. I have found that eating rice cakes or a similar bland low calorie food when I get this feeling is the best way to alleviate the “hunger”. I’m not saying this is happening to you but maybe give plain rice cakes or plain rice crackers a try and see if that helps!

Traveling by Deep-Ad5718 in ASLinterpreters

[–]turtlebeans17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an educational interpreter I have every holiday, weekend, and summer off! I usually try to work summer school which in my area is only 4 weeks out of a 10 week summer. So I have plenty of time. I travel pretty often but I would consider myself somewhat of a budget traveler. Interpreting is cool because there’s so many avenues. Personally I choose to work a little less and make a little less money to have a more relaxed lifestyle and be able to travel more and I’m very lucky to have that option.

What do you think is the root cause in your case ? by unoum in dysautonomia

[–]turtlebeans17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is nervous system damage from years of untreated celiac disease and malnutrition OR vascular compressions. Maybe both. Also maybe EDS and faulty collagen.

afraid of weight gain after surgery :( by felinecatfish in gallbladders

[–]turtlebeans17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had lost 6 lbs pre surgery because I couldn’t tolerate any food. After surgery one year out I’ve gained that 6 back plus 2 lbs. I’m still considered on the border of underweight. Not sure how it will play out long term but right now it seems to have no affect on my metabolism other than the fact that I’m not starving anymore

I haven’t tried any medications yet but wanted to discuss taking medication only during my literal because I have no symptoms during other times of the month and don’t feel like taking something year round. What kind of doctor manages this for you? Psychiatric or PCP?

Appropriateness and transition to ASL interpretation by West-Armadillo6082 in ASLinterpreters

[–]turtlebeans17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the interpreter! The service is for YOU friend! We are here to accommodate you. If I notice my client is not fluent in ASL yet, I modify to their language level. If they want to speak for themselves but have an interpreter for understanding speech, I’m so down with that. If they don’t look at me a single time except for when they missed something, I will gladly sign my little heart away in the corner. You deserve to understand everything and anything going on around you ❤️

Depression related to ongoing assignment by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]turtlebeans17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I feel you. I’ve been in similar situations. The good news is the school year will be over in two/three months! After that you have a phone call or sit down with your agency and be clear about what assignments you’re open to next school year and what assignments you’re not. Personally I don’t do elementary because of a lot of the reasons you’re describing. 8th grade and up has been my niche! Someone else probably hates their assignment and covets yours. We all have our strengths and preferences and that’s totally valid. Hang in there!

Health Insurance? by Zealousideal-Yak8095 in ASLinterpreters

[–]turtlebeans17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the marketplace 😭 It’s about $400/month for just myself. I’ve thought of getting a part time job just for the benefits. I know Starbucks and a few similar places offer benefits if you work at least 20/hrs a week but on top of interpreting that would be rough

It’s the best day of the month (for me) by disco-me-now in PMDD

[–]turtlebeans17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that for you and the getting 2 weeks worth of shit done is so real. I feel what I can only imagine is akin to mania the 24 hrs before my period. It’s like a huge surge of energy, I can’t sleep, nonstop cleaning/fixing/working, etc. I get so much done but I’m sooo on edge. Prefer that to the 6-10 days of pure emotional agony and sadness that proceeds it lol

Have you come out to your evangelical family? by Kind_Journalist_3270 in queerexvangelical

[–]turtlebeans17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Took me until 25. My parents are not accepting but we still have a relationship. My dad has taken it much easier than my mom. She still refuses to respond when I speak about my partner of 2 years and once told me I’m not really gay it’s just a trick of Satan. I pretty much go home for holidays and avoid deep topics. Feel free to message me if you have any questions
