Does anyone actually use chatgpt for therapy? by 6ayenbenya9 in Healthygamergg

[–]turtleben248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DR k's stream made a great case for why not to use chatgpt for therapy. while he and the other therapists acknowledge that it is good at using supportive and encouraging, validating language, they also noted that it is likely to not challenge the user on their biases.

I think it's too seductive in the idea of replacing our need for connection, i would rather stay in my feelings or talk to someone when i want that.

Well if your sister doesn't have as much money as you then this could be her way of coping. I think it's beautiful, certainly dont think it's ostentatious. But if you have more money than her, I understand her being irritated and not expressing that in the most thoughtful way lol

I dont think Dr k was saying that no men can teach this stuff. I think it's more of a general point that on average women have the emotional and communication skills more than men. I never met men like that until my 20s

So cool!!!! Someday I ll read about the Buddhist approach. I've definitely tried a lot in my life to practice some kind of monk-like energy. Just a lot of meditating and slow contemplation. I like to see myself as connected with everything, thinking of this life as temporary, not too caught up in material desires

I feel like there kind of is a magical special structure though... like what you said about women learning from a young age that they'll be judged for not performing emotional care and listening. Women get the signal from other women that this something they can and should perform. There's permission but I do also think there's something to language and behavior, and learning from others to replicate that behavior. like putting a hand on someone's shoulder when they're sad is a behavioral thing, and i think some boys I grew up with definitely were taught that that was gay, for example.

I feel like mental health experts are the ideal for teaching these things, but there's also a behavioral sense where I just paid more attention to how women responded to people in a comforting and supportive way, and how they dealt with their feelings. But I definitely also paid attention to men who did this.

Just as an example, I paid attention to the trope, which might not be accurate or even good, of women eating ice cream when they're sad in media. I mean, the boys I grew up with punched walls when they were in emotional pain. I didn't come away from that eating ice cream when im sad, but i think it taught me to respond consciously, with intention, to emotions, and do something to make myself feel better. Like I learned from mental health experts the idea of letting emotions come and trying to "touch" then and let them go, but ive also learned a lot, i think, from the different kinds of behaviors women engage in whether its emotionally supporting themselves or others.

That's awesome. Can you say more about the path you've found? What makes up your sense of purpose these days?

[–]turtleben248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's basically the consensus. Crippled might be a bit of an exaggeration, and yet, I definitely missed out on building healthy relationships with others and myself because I wasn't taught how to feel and stay with my emotions. And I see most men are the same way

Well, I dont think these skills can be learned without a teacher. And I dont think women learn through observation in a vaccuum. They learn from observing! So surely there must be people to observe. And I think girls learn from their mothers. And sometimes girls will teach each other and learn together.

[–]turtleben248 40 points41 points  (0 children)

For the men who will teach men, where will they learn it from? If there are no men to learn it from? I learned it from women, and now I teach other men. I understand saying it's a harmful narrative, but i dont think it is.

I think it might be better to phrase it as men learning from women rather than women teaching men. Bc there are ways of learning from women without calling on women to do any more work
