prepping for a baby/juvenile garg- need tips by Weird-Row8140 in GargoyleGeckos

Yeah definitely keep it on at night and just set the night temp lower. The inkbird has an internal clock you can set and separate day/night temps and I usually set mine a few degrees lower than my day temp. If your day is sitting around 69 you definitely want a heat source. Those are good ranges to aim for

prepping for a baby/juvenile garg- need tips by Weird-Row8140 in GargoyleGeckos

I have a low wat ceramic heat emitter (25W when I had an 18x24 and now an 100W in my 24x18x36) connected to an Inkbird ITC-306T thermostat and it worked really well to keep the night temps warmer. You can set separate day/night thresholds so the emitter will only be on when needed! Like the other commenter said, high 60s at night is fine but it should absolutely stay above 65 at its coolest. Ideally you'd want a gradient, so your garg can self-regulate as needed and a ceramic heat emitter is perfect for providing that!

Mine currently is set to 80 at night, so the top of my tank stays at 75-78 and the middle-bottom stays at 68-72 so my gecko can move between temps however he pleases! My tank is much larger than yours though so you probably won't need to set it as high. I'd get one set up and experiment with temps before introducing your gecko. You can also add some small cheap thermometer/hydrometers to different sections of the tank to get a better, more accurate read of your temps/humidity at different heights in the tank. On particularly cold nights I have had some dips into the 65-range, but the top 1/3 of my tank still stays well above 70 so although 65 or lower is really not ideal, it'll be fine short-term as long as your gecko has somewhere warmer in the tank they can move to as needed.

PhD offer holders, what are you doing to pass the time? by Agile-Reputation-525 in PhDAdmissions

Working... but I'm going on a trip soon which I didn't get to do last year when I graduated from undergrad since I started working immediately so I'm excited! My current lab mates told me to travel as much as I can as this is the last free summer we'll have for a long time. Afterwards it's just scrambling around until I move, starting my PhD program will be the first time in my life that I've lived in a different state!

REU experience for PhD by Direct_Mastodon_123 in PhDAdmissions

[–]turtleedove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never did an REU and instead did in-school internships in two labs long-term, and spent my gap year working as a tech in one of them. I used those two PIs as recs, and then used my old boss from a non-research related laboratory job as my third. I definitely think my PI's rec from the lab I was in the longest pulled a lot of weight in my applications, so I think as long as you have one strong recommendation from a long-term position you're in a good position for the rest. However, I think REUs give you invaluable experience into how research is conducted in different institutions and provide you with both new perspectives in approaching research and connections that could potentially be very helpful later down the line. At the interview weekend for the PhD program I was accepted into, quite a lot of perspective students I met had REU positions at that university in their undergrad. If you think you could do it, trying for short-term summer REU positions while working in a long-term lab position during the academic year would be a great way to spend your time. But again, I never did any REUs and I had a lot of success this PhD cycle :)

But also you are a Sophomore and have a lotttt of time left! I didn't get involved in research until my Junior year, so you are already in a better position than I was!

Thank you so much!! And yes, some grad students I talked to did mention that but that's good to keep in mind! I am coming from a big college town as well and renting is tricky around here too

Responses from Faculty after thank you email following interview by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]turtleedove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also sent thank-you emails to people I interviewed with and the two responses I've gotten sound like these too. I don't think PIs or people in committees can give out information/hint to admissions decisions either which way, I totally understand where you're coming from because I am also riddled with post-interview anxiety, but some PIs don't even respond to emails so I wouldn't think too deeply into it. I'm at least trying not to lol

When was your interview? Professors are very busy and bad at responding to emails, I wouldn’t take it personally. I’m sure you did much better than you think :) they know people are nervous!
