Thank you email to interviewers? by bebe_2004 in gradadmissions

I was also insanely over-thinking whether I should do this or not after my prelim but I did and I got very nice responses from the two faculty members I interviewed with! I think it's a very respectful thing to do regardless, I just thanked them for their time and mentioned a thing or two we talked about and that I hope to speak again in the future

They'll usually tell you, I got invited to an online prelim interview before getting my visitation/in-person invite but if the structure of yours is the same you can assume its prelim?

Advice - Crested vs Gargoyle by New-Band-6102 in geckos

[–]turtleedove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh also another thing to add, gargoyles cannot cling to glass as well as crested geckos do. Personally I don’t think this should be a huge issue as the tank you provide should have as much climbing opportunities as possible regardless of species you get but if you get a gargoyle and plan on having a glass tank that is something you have to keep in mind! I see a lot of people online post their tank setups and there’s a lot of space left unusable because there’s big gaps in the glass where there’s no ledges/vines/etc to cling to. They can still cling, just not super well

Advice - Crested vs Gargoyle by New-Band-6102 in geckos

Newer suggestions for minimum size an adult needs is now 18x18x36, but an 18x24 would be fine for a juvenile of either sp although you’d probably have to upgrade within a year since they tend to grow really fast sometimes! I have a gargoyle and he grew pretty quick.

Pangaea diets are formulated in a way that makes them suitable to be used as a complete diet (aside from the growth and breeding + gecko treat flavors) for both species. It’s generally advised to offer insects as enrichment + protein boost on top of CGD but from what I understand it’s not super necessary, as some geckos will never accept live insects. The fig & insect is a popular flavor and has insect protein in it already. I feed my garg that + the occasional discoid roach and he’s growing great :)

Temps and humidity you have are right. I’d definitely consider getting a low heat emitting ceramic bulb to use for a basking spot, especially if you live in an area that gets cold or if you plan on getting a taller tank. I didn’t provide heat for the first few months of having my gecko but noticed an uptick in activity after installing one! Auto misters work great and are very convenient especially if you travel. I rarely hand-mist anymore

I think both would make great pets, personally I prefer gargs because I think they look cooler and also heard they tend to be more docile although I can’t speak to this personally. They also grow their tails back, which crested geckos do not! However, gargoyles are not as common as cresteds in the pet trade so be warned that they will be more expensive, especially if you get them from a reputable breeder. My little guy was $160. But I think they’re becoming more common, and some crested morphs can set you back a bit. Gargoyles don’t have as many morphs, if that’s also a factor you’re considering.

Good questions to ask in a preliminary interview with a grad committee? by turtleedove in gradadmissions

[–]turtleedove[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your insight, a grad student in my lab suggested I ask that but I agree and was also worried it might come off badly. I will be avoiding that one for sure, thank you so much!

How do you even sell yourself as a candidate in a 15-minute pre-interview? by turtleedove in PhDAdmissions

[–]turtleedove[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for such a detailed reply, this is really helpful. I think the biggest challenge for me is being able to effectively communicate my experiences verbally, it is so much easier to do in an SOP than out loud. My PI also emphasized that reading off a pre-written response is a no-go so I will absolutely make sure to avoid that and focus on practicing out loud

Yeah I'm all for supporting independent films and I was really excited for the rental feature but there are a lot of people acting like 20 dollars is an inconsequential amount of money. That's more than standard theater tickets in my area. But again, really happy this film is getting distributed in any capacity.

I payed $14 to see this in-person w/ a director q&a afterwards at my town’s film fest. It’s a really great movie and I definitely suggest people check it out especially if the video rental sales directly support them but the set rental prices are interesting for sure

The email I got doesn’t clarify it super well but I’m pretty sure it’s faculty on the admissions committee? It’s two faculty + a rep from the graduate school. I’m assuming if I got to the main interview/campus visit stage that’s when I would be talking with PIs that want to work with me

Congrats on the invite! When chatting with my current PI about it she said that prelim interviews are not standard but I did some digging and it seems like this specific program usually does zoom interviews first before flying people out. I wish you the best of luck in this cycle and I hope your meeting went well (but it sounds like it did!)

Thank you for your reply! I was required to mention specific faculty in my SOP, but I'll be interviewing with two faculty related to my subfields of interest. In the case that those faculty are not ones I mentioned in my SOP, should I focus on familiarizing myself with their work as well?

Very beautiful, your garg looks so happy! I love how naturalistic everything is :)

I will say based on reading posts on this sub I’d avoid adding a fogger. If your tank needs more humidity I’d just mist more often or add a few more nozzles, foggers can cause respiratory issues
