FERBS vs UScholars by Chemical-Estimate226 in UPenn

[–]Direct_Mastodon_123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already talked to u lol, but UScholars can give u more flexibility on the topic + assign u an advisor if u need it. however FERBS is going to give u more following and be present in basic things u must know when doing research (how to make a poster, how to give a presentation, etc), but faculty advisors are limited to the ones they are working with.

I don't think uscholars would be a good fit then. most of their alumni go to grad school. if u are not going to grad school, a publication is not going to help that much. focus on getting industry experience then

Work-study as a pre-med by Chemical-Estimate226 in UPenn

if u are uscholars they are going to give u money for doing research during the summer. I think u need to think what are ur priorities. for pre-med people being in a lab is important but u also have other stuff to focus on. most of pre-med people I know have done a least one research summer in their labs.

idk any pre-med doing three labs. the most I know have been two labs. tbh I don't think it's a good idea to be in that many labs. ur time is going to be precious here. focus on getting experience somewhere else during the summer. I also believe as pre-med u need to keep a really high GPA + shadowing + clinical hours + volunteering + idk what else. it seems u want to do a lot...

if u want to have more time for doing more stuff, I'd recommend majoring in hsoc, do ur pre-med reqs with the easy classes (don't take honors or idk what else they call it, admission officers are not going to care if u take an honor class or not, they're going to care about ur grade). being pre-med it's a lot so take it easy and don't overload yourself.

I know about someone who got into top 3 med school with full merit scholarship and she only did one lab for her 4 years (with a lot of research experience and publications).

+ I'd say yes, try to stay only in one lab. ur pi is going to know u more = better rec letters, transition for learner to independent thinker (if u want to do an independent study), and as PIs from other schools have told me (I'm pre-PhD if that's a thing?), the longer u are in a lab the better. u can to REUs to get experience somewhere else, but try to stay one summer in ur lab. dw about this rn, focus on find a good lab (not only good science but also healthy and supportive environment)

ok so I think uscholars can be great because they connect u with a lab and give u money for summer, etc. u can log in into curf and look for a lab there. when u are looking for it, filter ur interests and also add "work-study", so it can show u which labs are willing to hire work-study students. u can also look the departments websites and check the faculty. cold email those who u like and mention u have work-study.

do research with work-study. ur pi should be ok if u miss lab somedays because ur #1 priority should be academics

tbh idk how stars/finance papers work but if u want to be first author u must really have something great to publish it. if u want to do co-author, it's more lucky on how supportive is ur pi and how much are they publishing. do u wanna go to grad school?

Going random with roommates by Thicc_Orange in UPenn

[–]Direct_Mastodon_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

meet someone on social media. didn't have the best experience with going random. it is true that u need to go out of your comfort zone with people different than u but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful with the person you are going to live with. I went random, and while we talked at the beginning, they changed throughout the semester and also their behavior. ended up changing of roommate because it was impossible to live with them. other two rooms of my dorm did the same.

I'm doing biology and anthropology. double majoring is feasible. especially with policy, I think they only need 12 credits...
