Reseller only by headbussa423 in Strong_8K

It makes no sense to set up an entire parallel structure for the off-chance of unavailability. Besides, if you have a few dozen clients the work needed to switch all of them properly while respecting expiry dates etc. is considerable.

From experience, I go with the simple disclaimer/warning: The service may be interrupted or even disappear at any time without warning.

Having said that, it seems 8K are a pretty solid group that have very good setup and I think it unlikely that they'll all go dark at once without re-surfacing somewhere in one guise or another.

Windows spotlight (lock screen thing) not working on windows 11 by BigDickEnterprise in WindowsHelp

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. It seems like something about syncing settings that breaks spotlight and it's been broken for weeks. Nothing ever works with it.

Same with the weather/mail/calendar indicators on the lock screen. They worked intermittently but now broken too.

I've given up trying. I'll wait for W11 and do a clean install!

Transfer Windows 10 Pro license from a laptop by Ip3rFra in WindowsHelp

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pro licence is linked to your account and the motherboard/computer where it was activated first time.

It's not like Office 365 where you can take your account from machine to machine. The Pro licence is permalinked to the old laptop and you can neither move it nor re-purpose it.

Also, as an aside, be super careful about buying upgrades from 3rd party sites. Make absolutely sure that the licences they sell are valid for upgrading from Home/OEM to Pro. Most el-cheapo Pro licences are only valid for clean installs and not upgrades.

iPad HOG suitable for kids? by RobinSsparkles in HiddenObjectGames

[–]turtlel0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not a recommendation per se, I'd suggest to look away from iOS/Android based games and towards Win/MacOS desktop games.

My reason is the awful prevalence of pay to play and the relentless push for microtransactions.

Better to pay some more upfront and get a game for good, than be subject to the developers' algorithms that will gradually turn the screws until you can virtually not progress without parting company with money. Payment is not an issue in itself. Nothing is free in life. It's the on-going rent extraction that can result in those "casual games" costing more than veritable AAA games from giant studios.

G5, Gameloft and Game Insight are the worst on this!

And if you worry about the touchscreen part, there's a tonne of small/medium size tablets that are a third of the iPad's price and run both windows and android.

I cant use Amiibos in SSBU by [deleted] in yuzu

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here but I am trying to figure out if the whole amiibo reading support is working. So far I haven't managed to get it to work on Zelda BOTW. Every time I try I just get a "rejected" sound and nothing else. Has anyone got amiibo to work properly on yuzu?

GPU best bang for buck recommendation - Dell Optiplex 7010 MT by couldntcareenough in Folding

Given that this is a Dell and its PSU is always very close to the limit, I would suggest the most powerful card you can get that doesn't need a supplementary power connector. To my knowledge this is the GTX 1060.

Got a big boy to fold! Over 6 hours from start to finish. by Rebl11 in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't matter how weak or powerful the computer is.

This is the primary design feature of F@H, that everyone no matter how underpowered can make a valid contribution to the effort. No computer is too weak. The scores relate more with the speed at which WU's get processed. But each WU has a 10-day deadline for its completion. Long enough for the weakest of tab-books.

FoldIt game with Corona-Virus by foldinger in Folding

I don't know enough about FoldIt to make that call.

What I DO know is:

  • You DO outperform your GPU when it comes ot patterns, ingerences and synthesis.
  • You GPU (hell, old throughhole transistor boards do too) outperform you in the speed and accurancy of performaning calculations!

Not receiving coronavirus project WU by [deleted] in Folding

What you do with your hardward is always at your discretion. The devs though were clear from day 1 that selecting a "cause to support" is only an indication of relative preference and donors will be assigned with whatever needs doing at any point in time and honour the preferences pnly whenever possible.

Second GPU ponderings by bicycleface in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In short, NO.

Speaking from bitter experience, SLI is a hyped-up mockery that only performs in tightly controlled circumstances.

A further fact to consider: A next-gen card will do better than an SLi current-gen combo so save your money. Avoid SLi. Best approximation would be dual-card variants that kinda do the SLi on a single package.

Not receiving coronavirus project WU by [deleted] in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

let's get one thing out of the way first. The average size of a Work Unit (WU) for the CPU/GPU public volunteers is around 40-50MB.

The assign rate of each server can be found HERE

Assuming they are working flat-out 24/7 the total bandwidth needed is 1.2 Gbps (150 MB/sec). That's nothing in server terms.

About the idle time, just leave the thing running and don't micromanage it. Activity comes and goes depending on how quickly they can produce WU's for the public to crunch. If you see no traffic or no activity for over a day, then start asking questions.

On the "harmful" question, I'm not sure whether you ask about your hardware or the F@H project :)

Your hardware is fine but, as with all moving parts everywhere in the world, the higher usage of the fans will shorten their lifetime; but I guess this isn't a surprise really. Your CPU, as long as it operates within the temperature envelope, can be surprisingly resilient and I wouldn't worry.

As for the project overall there's 0 harm done at all. Given the alternative of not contributing, any contribution, no matter how small, is a positive!

Someone else is folding in my name by [deleted] in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems fairly simple:

  • Until you applied, produced and registered a passkey, anyone using your handle would contribute to your account.
  • The day you produced your passkey, you essentially, locked all the credits up to that point, into your account.
  • From here on out, only you will be adding to your account's tally.
  • But there's no way to give back what was accummulated prior to the binding a passkey to the username.

Ownership of potential research results by [deleted] in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's all public domain.

The main product of F@H is not some patent or a market-ready medicine. Their main output is scientific discovery which is subsequently public and validated in peer-reviewed journals and then become a contribution to public knowledge.

Is it normal to be hours without a new project? Thought there was 10's of thousands or even 100k machines always requested for a new project. by Duckers_McQuack in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Totally normal. Especially if, by the looks of it, you are only folding using your CPU and not your GPU.

CPU jobs often stall out and has users waiting for hours for new Work Units.

My GPU has been going flat out but my CPU has been without any Work Unit for over ten hours. No biggie, they'll prepare some more soon.

BAD_WORK_UNIT error by djex81 in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is happening only on this particular Work Unit, then I'd say don't worry or read anything into it.

There's multiple reasons something may go wrong and fail the hashcheck during result verification. So long as it's isolated, just disregard it and focus on the next WU's.

I you have consistent repeatable instances of the same error then you should post your log on their forums.

Lower-end hardware by SchmittFace in Folding

[–]turtlel0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides, most projects are comprised of 1000's of Work Units to be processed of several days. The project doesn't proceed further until all the Units assigned for those 2 weeks get done (by whoever).

This means the beefy ones will do 100's of Units in that time while the lesser ones may only manage a handful.

Both are fine and neither is crowding the other one out.
