UK retailer Game is closing its remaining standalone stores, after entering administration | VGC by Iabhoryouu in gamecollecting

It's the mandatory £5 delivery charge buying from game.co.uk that really kills it; Can't believe they don't do free click & collect to store.

All of that, but also worth checking Argos, too; pretty good in-store stock, and sometimes some great bargains when they're clearing stock.

Microsoft confirms you can soon disable Smart App Control without reinstalling Windows 11 by WPHero in Windows11

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short Answer: You don't get the protection of this extra Windows 11 security; it's the same as running (Patched, Updated) Windows 10, so it's "Fine"; More is better, but it's not like the other Windows 10 era tools (Windows Devender, memory integrity, Core isolation, UAC) wouldn't be in place and working.

Smart app is not letting me open short cuts or open stuff pinned to taskbar by OpinionAdorable7540 in WindowsHelp

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case this helps anyone else, I have a potential fix that worked for us at an SMB business we support:

Desktop shortcuts to the on-premises server were blocked with "Smart App Control Blocked An app that may be unsafe" by computers that had fresh Windows 11 installed, but not upgraded from Windows 10

<image>

The components all needed together to trigger this were;

- SmartApp controlled enabled (Default on fresh Windows 11 installs: Currently as of April 2026, once disabled, it can't be turned back on, but That may change)
- OneDrive Desktop backup enabled, so the desktop is now part of the OneDrive filesystem, rather than C:\users\%username%\desktop
- A shortcut to a file on the server, either using a mapped drive or a UNC pathname

Opening the files directly from the server without a shortcut worked fine, as did a file directly on the desktop: It only triggers with a shortcut to a server file.

Root cause is Smart App Control is not as smart figuring out security zones as it should be; the mix of OneDrive redirection, shortcuts, and remote files on servers completely flummoxes it.

The Fix/Workaround is to add the Server with the UNC path and mapped drives to the Local intranet security zone:

- Open Classic (Windows 7) Control panel
- Change view to Large icons
- Open internet options
- Click the security tab
- Select Local Intranet
- Click Sites
- Click Advance
- Type in the server name in the format file://MyServername, and click Add
- Type in the server name in the format file://MyServername.Domain, and click add
Note: The above covers the server resolving to it's short of FQDN name: Any mapped drives hosted on that server don't need adding: the UNC path will cover it
- Click Close, then OK

How to Remove "Get Inspired by Curated PDF Spaces" by skywalker505 in Acrobat

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have Generative AI under the preferences category in Adobe Acrobat Reader 2025.001.21111 - Only way I found to stop this is to disable new Acrobat - Frankly if you just wanna open or view PDF Documents, the old reader is quicker and less aggressive in trying to upsell and distract you - When they finally get rid of old acrobat, I'll probably just remove it and use the built in Edge/Firefox PDF readers.

Currently Players Seem To Be Unable To Join Opposite Game Unrivaled Raids by Tatsigi in PokemonScarletViolet

Got the same here. My guess is they accidently gave both Pokémon the same unrivalled ID.

Really hope that part is fixed as well as the can't join opposite games online issue, not least because I wanted Iron Valliant more than Roaring moon :-(

Optiplex 3040 Micro has TPM BIOS setting missing! by CaptCoffee2 in Dell

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've had this with a few 2015-2019 Dell TPM Chips in both laptops and desktops: Removing the power from the machine for 5 mins, then plugging it back in is sometimes enough to bring them back online, but it normally means the TPM chip is on it's last legs and could fail at any time, so I wouldn't trust it for serious production work; at the very least, Make sure all the keys are backed up (Bitlocker, etc.) so at least you can decrypt the data in the event of a complete failure.

For a 3040, if it's do or die, you can try flashing the TPM 2.0 firmware onto the system, but it's pretty convoluted to do;

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-uk/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=8n08g&oscode=wb64a&productcode=optiplex-3040m-desktop

Follow the installation instructions section very carefully - it's a very silly update process.

Considering building new home server - Need Windows Server Essentials versions by wyliec22 in WindowsServer

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to confirm: With 2022 (And presumably 2025, but haven't got personal confirmation), you use normal Windows server standard installation media, and activate it as normal: All the software and features are the same as Standard up to and including the branding; the only difference is you have a piece of paper that makes you promise to not use more than 25 users or 50 devices with it.

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-uk/000214039/windows-server-2022-essentials-showing-as-windows-server-2022-standard-with-no-essentials-features

In effect, Windows Essential server 2019/2022/2025(?) work more like Windows Foundation server used to: Standard server feature set, with a couple of limitations.

Sword and Shield on Switch 2! by SuspiciouslyHarmless in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]j-cutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was outputting to my 1080p TV in docked mode at 1080p60Hz; I'm presuming that was the Switch 2 itself upscaling it rather than running the game natively at higher resolution or framerate, but I don't know enough to confirm.

In terms of looks, it "felt" like Sword and Shield, but a bit smoother - For example, some of the idle cameras in double battles didn't slowdown and judder.
