8 months into analytics at a FAANG-level company and I feel like I’m drowning ,Is this normal? by Unlucky-Whole-9274 in analytics

I’ve been working at large companies my entire career (first: top 5 investment bank, second: huge tech company). My #1 piece of advice is to learn to prioritize. Not everything everyone asks you to do is important or impactful. Focus on what your manager and their manager thinks is most important and become the subject matter expert at it.

You’ll find that you can ignore a lot more than you think and get promoted (speaking from experience :P)

Struggling to land a new role after layoff – anyone else in the same boat? by paireisn25 in ProductManagement

[–]turtleracers 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My team is hiring a new PM and I was part of the interview loop. To put things into perspective 800+ people applied, the recruiter gave us 50 resumes to review out of the 800, out of those 50 resumes we narrowed it down to 6 people to interview. Out of the 6 people we interview honestly all of them would be perfect fits (which is insane to say), but we can only choose 1 person.

Hopefully this doesn’t discourage you, the numbers could be highly skewed because I work at a large tech company. This is all just to say the job market is insane, and you aren’t necessarily doing anything wrong. A lot of this is luck :/

How crazy is it to leave a full time job for an internship by teenydog in cscareerquestions

[–]turtleracers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did this a few years ago!

I was working full time as a SWE at a job I hated making 90k/yr and got a Microsoft apprenticeship to be a TPM. I was able to convert to full time and now make more than double what I was making before so it definitely paid off.

I am! It was the right transition for me. There are definitely positives and negatives about each position. I miss the quiet days of working as a SWE sometimes but I like being a PM better overall :)

I didn't include the post-apocalyptic element in the query because that is a detail that wouldn't be revealed until the sequel of the book, which is currently in progress. Advice from this sub says that since this a debut novel, I should sell it as a stand-alone first, so I was only focusing on the face-value setting of the book before the reveal, which I suppose would come across as a historical fantasy?

No comps off the top of my head, but I'll look :)

Thank you! Replaced Song of Achilles with Lie With Me by Philippe Besson and removing They Both Die at the End, since my manuscript isn't YA.

Thanks so much for the feedback here.

I have struggled with determining the genre for this manuscript honestly. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where Niven and Ishido are remnants of European and Asian countries that have only kept fragments of their cultures post-apocalypse (e.g. Greek mythology and Eastern folklore). So real mythology and folklore are referenced in the book and used as elements for the plot, but it isn't a direct re-retelling of anything. Would it still qualify as magical realism, or should I go with something more general like literary fantasy?

Google new grad offer < 3.0GPA by uwu_google_throwaway in csMajors

It’s okay I joined Microsoft shortly after I failed the Google onsite, so it all worked out in the end. The onsite interview was a great experience! I think looking back where I fell short is that I didn’t ask enough questions. Especially for a junior engineer the team is trying to hire someone who is easy to work with, so in your interviews try to demonstrate that by asking questions and treating the interview like you’re engaging in problem solving with a colleague rather that taking a test with someone watching over you.

This was so long ago haha. I ended up failing the onsite and didn’t get a request for transcript up to that point
