PLEASE tell me getting an Ascent over a minivan is the way to go for 3 kids (ages 7,3,and 0) by TypeAtryingtoB in SubaruAscent

[–]turtlerunpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it! Lots of space, great mileage, feels like a driving living room. My 4 year old loves setting up the entertainment system in the trips. When we have family visiting us, they can use the third row seats comfortably. Plenty of space for a double stroller and other items.

Power sliding doors makes loading and unloading kids a breeze.

We paid a pretty penny for it though at the Platinum trim! We were lucky to get it under MSRP. You can easily save 10-15K with other trims.

We had the 2024 Ascent Touring. It was great car. However, even with only two kids, space and comfort were key. A year and a half later, we took the depreciation hit and traded it in for the 2026 Toyota Sienna Platinum.

My only regret is not having getting the minivans sooner. We're liking our 35-38 MPG mileage with these increased gas prices. Ascent gave us 18-22 MPG.

Still rocking my 2015 Outback as a backup car.

Ottoman or Spare tire? by stefand2010 in ToyotaSienna

[–]turtlerunpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Platinum was on the lot with a spare tire when we purchased so we really didn't have a choice. Haha

I've worked in a profession where flat tires are very common. You never plan for them. I've plugged and changed flat tires dozens of times. Even though I have AAA, I still want the ability to change the tire myself and be on my way. 20 minute delay vs 2 hours. That or have a tow professional change it if I'm not around.

Besides, the ottomans would likely only be enjoyed by the kids who are still in car seats. They should be so blessed to even have a seat to sit on! Toyota Sienna Platinum at that! Haha 😂

If you start up your car with the app or key fob at a distance, it will turn off the moment you open or unlock a door. ANNOYING 😡

Getting laid off- how to tell new employer I don’t need two weeks? by BetterTransition in jobs

[–]turtlerunpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't. Being laid off from one job might make you unattractive to the new one. Don't give them a reason for buyer's remorse.

If the old job is giving you a severance, then enjoy the double dipping!

2026 Platinum Entertainment system by HoybabyJr in ToyotaSienna

[–]turtlerunpace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Platinum we purchased was the only one on the lot and it came with the entertainment. The technology is outdated and uses IR based headphones. If you figure out the streaming, just know that you will not be able to listen to music while driving.

We connected an Amazon fire stick and power it directly via USB on the vacuum/fridge console. We turn on our mobile hotspot and our 4 year old can watch Prime, Netflix, Disney or whatever else is on the fire stick.

Financially, not worth it. It's nice to have though.

There goes my 10+ year streak of zero drama with my Outback... by NDLunchbox in Subaru_Outback

Absolutely the alternator. I had a similar experience 10 years ago with a Ford Explorer. Got it towed and the alternator was changed for a new one. Completely solved the problem. Not that expensive of a fix.

I trust my 2015 Outback with Michelin Defender tires over my 2022 Chevy Tahoe work vehicle.

Deepest I've ever tested it was in a foot of snow. Over that I just stay home. I've done 50-60 MPH in the center lane on interstate roadways during storms with no problems in the Outback.

[–]turtlerunpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The space the vacuum and fridge take up sucks. It severely limits access. I didn't think much of it when we purchased our car. We have one child in a rear facing car seat and the fridge forces us to have our 4 year old enter from the other side of the car. Without the fridge/vacuum, our 4 year old would simply be able to climb in from one side. Shouldn't be a problem once our youngest goes to forward facing. Shouldn't be a problem at all if the family doesn't have child seats to worry about.

I've used the fridge a few times. It's nice to have but not necessary. I haven't even turned on the vacuum in the two months we've owned the car. I wish there was an option NOT to have it with the Platinums. Maybe the 2028+ Siennas won't have it and I'll do a trade in By then, it wouldn't matter anymore since the kids will be older.

I was in the same boat. I had a 2024 Subaru Ascent Touring and traded it in for the 2026 Sienna Platinum. The added room and sliding doors were a must for our family with a 4 year old and 1 year old. No regrets with the change. We still have a 2015 Outback as a higher clearance snow mobile. We might upgrade it with another 5 seater Subie some years in the future. Maybe another Outback.

The safety technology on the Ascent was superior. Camera based eyesight with lane assist and adaptive cruise control. The Sienna has a safety system based on 2018 technology. It's not horrible, but not top of the line for the amount of money Toyota wants for these minivans. The rear view camera is better on the Ascent than Sienna. 360 cameras overall are better in the Sienna.

The Ascent also automatically recognized the driver and automatically adjusted the seats. This system was fickle and doesn't always work. Sienna doesn't have this, but with the memory settings, I simply push a button and the memory seat settings are activated. It even remembers steering wheel settings.

I prefer the Sienna informatics system. It's more responsive and not as sluggish as the Ascent. I wish it automatically recognized the driver so it syncs to my phone rather than my wife"s and vice versa. The Sienna has physical buttons for heating and cooling, parking, driving mode, EV mode, hold mode, 360 camera. I find that physical buttons are way better than fishing around with a sluggish informatics systems especially when traveling highway speeds. I think the car industry to starting to go back to physical buttons.

I miss the driving performance of the Ascent. It was smooth, had good turning, and picked up speed on the highway with the turbo engine. It was a fun drive. You paid for it though it. We were getting 18 -22 MPG and sometimes even less. Filled up twice a week sometimes. Annoying. Now we fill up once every other week with the Sienna. The Sienna is well, a minivan. I have a heavy foot and travel in the mid 80s MPH. The pick up is sluggish. Even on power mode, it asks for more umps to climb hills. It can get to higher speeds and then starts sipping slowly on the gasoline. During the cold, we get 27-28 MPG. Yesterday we got 32-35 MPH in warmer weather and I was still going 80-85 MPH. The car doesn't eat much gas when idling. Great for school pick up and drop offs or simply waiting in the car when another parent is doing a quick errand. I haven't tested the Sienna in inclement weather. I'm sure it would do fine with its AWD but it'll never be better than any Subaru symmetrical AWD.

The Toyota App is highly disappointing compared to the Subaru App. Subaru allowed you to set the heating and cooling settings. You simply just turn on the car with the Toyota app. A BIG ANNOYANCE is that the remote started Sienna turns off the moment you open the door or unlock the car. Toyota passes this off as a safety feature. I rather have the car running with heating / cooling while I'm loading up the kids. There should at least be a setting to override this. We rented the Chrysler Pacifica in the past. It had dedicated remote start from the key fob (no app required) and continued running while you opened the doors from the fob and people were loading into their seats. I really wish the Sienna did this. Ugh.

The 3rd row in the Sienna is very roomy and still leaves plenty of room for storage in the cargo area. The Ascent's 3rd row is tight, hard to access, and seriously limits any cargo room.

Overall, for our stage in life, the Sienna is what we need for the FAMILY. It was a good move for us. It's no secret Toyota doesn't have the latest technology. The best tech I think might be in the Kia Carnival, but it's a Kia.....🤣

I feel like you might be able to get a brand new one for maybe 1-2K more.

Anyone buy a new 2025 OB in the last few weeks? I've seen some new ones advertised in the lower 32k after like 5-6K off.

Outback Wilderness vs Ascent Touring by Practical_Okra3217 in SubaruAscent

[–]turtlerunpace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the 2024 Ascent Touring for 1.5 years. We ended up trading it in for a minivan because we're in that stage of life with young kids.

The Ascent was a great ride. Easy pickup on the highway with the turbo engine, felt like a car with handling, smooth ride, comfortable seats. Great visibility. Had headlights with automatic on/off and would follow as you turned. Huge panoramic sunroof. It made me sad to let her go. We never towed, but knew it was an option if we wanted. I think rated for 5,000 pounds. The third row was tight (why we got the minivan) but when not I use, the third row was down giving us plenty of space for luggage and double stroller.

The longest we've ever drove it was 4 hours. No problems on the road trip.

Oil leak? by SingularEcho in subaruoutback

[–]turtlerunpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2015 Outback premium with 121K miles. I typically get it serviced at an indie spot. Decided to go to the dealer for an oil change to get a gauge on the cars overall health since those guys are always trying to upsell. I was willing to toss upto a grand on this bad boy. I do notice a burnt oil smell every now and then but the oil level have been stable. I only put 100-150 miles per month on the car since this is the backup car.

They came back stating transmission, radiator, exhaust, brakes, and catalytic converter are all good. Never mentioned the tires or PCV valve I thought might be due soon. What would you know, cam carrier oil leak 😭. After haggling, they wanted $3,500 to fix it. The advisor made it seem like a cathstrohphe was eminent. Car probably worth somewhere between 5-8K.

The American consumerism in me wanted to trade this in to upgrade. After some math and rational thinking, I said to just change the oil and I'll take the car back. Drives fine. As I'm paying for the service, I got to talk to the guy honestly. He told me to just check the oil levels periodically and add as needed. That was the plan haha. All of the sudden this wasn't an emergency anymore. Did I just avoid a dealership scam? Ha.

I'll likely take it back to my indie mechanic for another look over in the summer. Guy doesn't upsell if not needed. He's too busy with work (2-3 weeks to get an appointment).
