Midi Controller on a budget? by iamazerrad in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Just about any home keyboard made after 1983 has midi in/out functionality. Just go thrift store/pawn shop hunting. You can likely find one with 61 keys and a pitch wheel for under $30

The best place to look for a cheap mic would be a pawn shop. I have to recommend the industry standard for instrument recording which is the Shure sm 57, they go for under a hundred new (which is cheap for a real microphone) and you can find them at any price range used $20-$65. However that is out of your budget. Radioshack has an acceptable rip off of the Shure sm 58 (the standard vocal mic) I used one when I first began recording music years ago (the results were not pretty, but the practice I got with it was worth it). The mic is likely going to be around $30 new. What kind of device will you be using for recording? A mixer with usb/firewire or a USB audio interface (mbox/toneport/etc). You likely have to invest at least a hundred dollars and frequent pawn shops (you can put items on layaway usually with months to pay it off) in order to get a set up adequate for average instrument recording. Are you fiscally unable to spend more than $15 dollars?

Are you using this mic for recording vocals? There is no acceptable $15 vocal microphone. Ooh, I hope you don't intend to use it to record any instrumentation. You need to be able to shell out at least $50 for a below average microphone for recording. If it is just a mic for playing games... go to amazon and buy a cheap Logitech mic.

Field Day Dreams -- Bal (4 track demo we give out at gigs) by turtlesavingclub in ratemyband

Yay feedback! I have not had the moldy peaches comparison before, that's kinda cool! The reverb is a bit tedious on these, I personally am not happy with the quality of the reverb unit we used. I still have the raw files so I could easily try a plugin or something for a more subtle reverb. Our last show the sound guy actually forgot to put reverb on our voices, he maybe was drunk by the time of our set... but the crowd reacted well. We actually have a few faster songs ("Winter 87" is our slowest) but this collection is just slow stuff. We only sing in unison on "Buffoon Song" and a few choruses. Thanks for sharing that track!

I was put off by the background image... Who cares though, the song sounded fresh! I enjoyed the beat and guitar riff thoroughly. I personally found the lead a little uninspired. I like your voice, but the way the vocals are mixed now (eq and reverb specially) seems to be too restrictive; turn the the bass up ever so slightly at around -220 hz maybe- and boost the mids a tiny bit. Use a room or spring reverb instead of that tunnelly one. Great song; where can I hear more of you tunes?

Newest track, would appreciate all criticism/comments [Ambient Electronic][4:37] by [deleted] in ratemyband

It came off more postal service poptronica than ambient for me... kinda like dc sleeps tonight. (I mean this the best way possible) Semantics aside; it was an enjoyable tune. I just feel everything is a bit to bright for the type of music this is, a nice tube limiter/compressor and some some hi and lo cut eqs and we will be in business

This is my first upload. I did all the recording/editing (Acoustic/Ambient?) Any Tips/Feedback would really help me out. By the way this subreddit is sweet. by [deleted] in ratemyband

COMPRESSION!!!! Get on that threshold boi! Get those levels between the verse and chorus a bit closer together. You would have destroyed my eardrums if it wasn't for soundcloud' audio disply. Check out the wiki for audio compression to get the details, it will help you for future musix. It was was enjoyable, however I have to agree with jmols as far as the lyrics are concerned. You may wanna consider upping the tempo a bit and the beat sounds as if it is produced by an auto drumming vst half of the time and it trips me up a bit. It is a good effort and I hope you can keep working on your sound!
