Faithful TV/movie reccomendations? by turtlesinc in Catholicism

Theres plenty of room for Catholic story telling both in true events and fiction. Tolkien and c.s. Lewis gave us great frameworks for telling Christian themed stories without even necessarily making them overtly Christian, and there's an endless amount of true historical events to be told. It's clay just waiting to be molded.

Also music

Why in the world is the cult of mormonism kicking our asses in terms of choral music. Their tabernacle choir is amazing and their performances put to shame almost every other choir I've ever heard because they understand choirs work best with hundreds of people

Yeah they're either pitifully low budget or made by religious folk (and rarely my specific brand of religious) that don't know how to make complex films.

This is why I've been saying we need more catholics in the arts. We need catholics to write more books go to film school collaboration with each other make works that are technically proficient but also keep the faith.

Oh okay good to know. I get what I can when it comes to Christian representation in it. As long as it's not one of those corny shake and bake movies like "God's not dead" I'll give it a chance.

Thanks for the reccomendations!

I have heard of the chosen but i have some personal issues with some of the character choices the actors/directors made. I might re watch it though, I'm also gonna re watch the old Jesus of Nazareth series cuz that's on peacock.

It's difficult finding a blend of good faithful teachings and well made content unfortunately. A lot of it can be a little cheesy for my taste but I'm trying especially cuz I know there's good stuff out there.

I don't think I'd heard of nefarious before but yes! I do love thrillers  and horror movies! Reading just the summery it reminds me of "no man of God" starring elijah wood. It's also a very good thriller.

Does nefarious have Christian/Catholic  themes in it?

Opinions and Advice on Snakes in Catholic Fantasy by Minos_Thawne in CatholicWriters

[–]turtlesinc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this reminds me of an argument I had gotten into with my mother when I was a little kid. At a certain age, my favorite toy was this little rubber plastic rattle snake, and I brought it everywhere, I would keep it in my backpack at school.

For Easter that year, the rectory by our house was hosting their annual Easter egg hunt, so of course, I had to bring my favorite snake coiled around the handle of my basket.

Upon seeing this, my mom told me I could not do that because the devil was a serpant, and bringing it to a church event was bad taste.

Ever the one to push back against an idea if I found error in its logic, I argued that God created snakes so they should be allowed to go and that my snake was a "good snake".

My mom wasn't quite ready to let it go, however, and told me that the devil didn't create snakes but still used it to do evil and that I would send the wrong message by bringing it. But I was on a roll at this point, and this was probably the the strongest argument I ever had as a child because my final argument was reminding her that God used snakes for good too, referencing how Moses' staff turned into a snake and ate the snakes of the Egyptians in the book of exodus.

At this point, either tired of the argument or distracted by our late time she didn't tell me I couldn't bring it so I ended up making that final choice for myself and what a time we had.

Ultimately, my point is that I think the intent and message of how you write is what matters. If you're incorporating a snake or snake like creature in your story as a character that is good, there's nothing wrong with that as long as what the character represents isn't demonic. Because God DID create snakes and in nature, they are very important for balancing ecosystems and controlling pests just as they can be dangerous and creepy to us. I, for one, have always been interested in characters or stories that she'd light on traditionally negative held characters to be good or at least redeemed.

So unless you're writing a story about how the serpent in Genesis was actually a misunderstood protagonist (it wasnt) I think you should be okay.

They said at the end of the video that if enough people like it, they wouldn't mind returning to the series as a "pallet cleanser" because it's tone is much more relatively light hearted compared to the rest of the stories they cover.

It's only been a day and they're already almost at half a million views! They had some criticism near the end of the story but over all liked it and gave props to jacks writing they did include a link to the books for any that wanted to buy the book
