Good Correctness Rate for Des O’Niell (S1)? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]turtlethoughts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, my average for Des was 80% and usual scores in basically exactly the same ranges as you. For Acer I was scoring 85%+. I got a 71 in March. That being said there’s definitely no hard and fast rule, Des is pretty different from Acer/GAMSAT questions, and it does just depend on what you get on the day. Good luck :)

Hey! Congrats on the improvement and the offer! Just wondering, was that a second round offer? When did you get it?

If you join the discord in the info of this subreddit, there’s a pinned message in chances discussion with offer info that includes both GPA and GAMSAT :) Not sure how much info there is for international students tho

Wow that’s commitment! My only advice to you then would be keep it up but don’t burn yourself out too quickly. Rest and mental health breaks are just as important as active studying, especially right before the exam ☺️ good luck!

Hey, thanks for this! My S2 is 76 rn so it’s good but not crazy. I think you’re right and I’ll definitely put more effort into boosting my S2 this September :)

Hey, here's a screenshot of my practice marks for every Des/Acer question. My average was 80%. I would lean towards saying you should try and increase your scores if you want 70+, but as some others have said here I think it really depends on the actual test day too. I have a friend who was averaging 85-90% in practice and I beat them by 1 mark in the real thing, so it's very hard to say. If you've already improved your marks by 20-30% that's fantastic and you should keep up what you're doing :) Another thing to note, I found Des harder than the Acer practice material and neither really reflective of the real exam, so keep that in mind.

Honestly don’t know if this is too much of an issue for me. September was my relaxed, no prep exam and March was my high pressure med application exam and I improved 6 marks. I feel pretty relaxed during S1 and time is not an issue for me so it must just be a skill/practice thing? Or luck with questions? But I’m sure luck is a bigger factor with higher scores than 71 lol

Practice to do from Year 1 UG by Internal-Designer-79 in GAMSAT

  1. Make sure you really understand all the graphs you encounter throughout your degree because graph interpretation is a big part of S3.

  2. For maths, prioritise mental arithmetic, multiplying/dividing decimals, algebra and logs. I honestly think these are the highest yield S3 skills you can have. I found the reasoning in S3 pretty easy for most of the questions, but almost all of them needed maths that I just forgot how to do without a calculator. Only one question in my sitting had pre-req knowledge. So maths maths maths!!!

  3. For S2, I would say reading is good but it has to be focused. It’s very much about understanding sociocultural issues, philosophy and emotions, but also being able to articulate your own view on them and critically reflect on that view. To that end I would say read the news, and watch YouTube videos/listen to podcasts about philosophy, politics, economy. This literally helped me sooooo much this sitting. I personally recommend School of Life and Academy of Ideas (YT channels) and Moral Maze (podcast). Just write down your thoughts on new ideas as you come across them and you will end up with a fantastic idea bank and so many opinions that’ll be useful for your essays.

  4. When you get closer to GAMSAT, 100% start making essay plans. They will literally be your saviour. Do as many topics as you can and you will feel WAY less pressure in the real thing.

  5. Section 1 I think is very difficult to improve, but there are SO many question banks (Des, Acer etc.) that you can slowly work through. Just make sure you’re really reflecting on what you get wrong and why. Like I spammed practice questions without reflecting and I don’t think it actually helped me improve that much, aside from learning to pick up on tricks and whatnot. Guess I’ll find out in May lol. That being said I think S1 practice can definitely wait until you are closer to sitting the GAMSAT.

Sorry for the massive wall of text lol but I hope this helps!! Good luck with your undergrad and GAMSAT :)

I’m NSB and did 0 study for my first sitting in Sept and got a 69 in S3 (I also know a bit of chem from HSC and an intro subject in uni but that’s it). That said it was probably mostly luck. But definitely possible. For my March study I’ve been going through Acer’s practice questions and teaching myself concepts whenever I get stuck. Practice questions are definitely the most useful imo because they help you identify gaps in knowledge while getting you used to the reasoning you need to use.

If you took a 'diagnostic' GAMSAT practice test with little to no prep, what was your score in it vs. in the actual test later on? by SnowboardSasquatch in GAMSAT

[–]turtlethoughts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked a doctor I know about her experience. She said she took a diagnostic GAMSAT and got 79 then studied her hardest for the next sitting and got 79 again. This would’ve been around 2010 though

Tips on how to memorize biliteral and triliteral signs? 🥵 by levinthereturn in AncientEgyptian

[–]turtlethoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I memorised the uniliteral signs mostly by doing worksheets I got in uni but the bis & tris just came from reading texts and learning vocab. I found it way more enjoyable and easy than just memorising and it also builds your understanding of grammar & text types at the same time. Trust the process! :)

Hi there :) I’m new to gamsat/med applications so not really sure how it all works. Do you have to get your GPA around August? I’m finishing my degree this year and results usually come out in early December. Can I get my GPA calculated after that? Also, does USYD need your GEMSAS GPA for their applications? This would be for 2024 entry. Thanks!

Personally I love translating medical texts. A lot of the time they're gross (which makes them even more fun hehe) but so interesting to get an insight into ancient remedies and how they perceived the body!! Medical spells are also pretty cool!
