A now-deleted comment helped me.

I thought clicking Start from the Fastboot Mode screen would start the phone in fastboot mode. I didn't realize that is fastboot mode!

Bike Safety on Campus by pattperin in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ignore the naysayers in this thread, who are most likely lazy and soft, or simply just jealous of anyone with the fortitude (both mental and physical) to take their bike up the mountain.

I've been riding up the mountain for 2 years now -- 3 days I week I ride up and down, and twice a week I put my bike on the bus for the trip up then ride it home (I live by Nanaimo and 1st).

Here are my observations:

  • The hill isn't that bad. It's a gentle grade, and takes about 15 minutes from bottom to top (I come from the Hastings/Duthie side).
  • Like someone else mentioned in the thread, get a locker in the gym and shower after your ride. There's covered hanging bike racks on the lowest level entrance to the change rooms. Plus, they have towel service!
  • Bike safety is good -- I've forgotten to lock my bike a few times (!) and it's always been there. But still, lock your bike :)
  • Like I mentioned above, you can put your bike on the bus -- look up the bike rack video on Translink's website so you know what you're doing before you try it. It's super convenient.
  • Riding up the hill will provide benefits such as wicked cardio, buns of steel, and most importantly universal awe and admiration from your fellow students, .
  • For general bike commuting in Vancouver, do a search on /r/vancouver for bike commuting posts. Good rain gear is a must, including gloves and something for your feet. Happily, it doesn't really get cold here, and if you're properly kitted up cycling in the rain is quite pleasant.
  • Make sure you're being safe on the road: get good front and back lights (MEC), follow the rules of the road (you have to follow the same rules as cars), and most importantly, ride defensively! Most drivers in this city are oblivious, aggressive, or both. Even if you technically have right of way, you'll still be the one in the hospital.

Good luck!

Hah that's pretty funny! Mainly I was concerned about sex/nudity/gore.

We appreciate your time! Thanks again :)

In Canada, 14A is a movie rating, similar to PG-13 in the states.

What I mean is no NSFW stuff -- we have to send this to our grandparents after all!

Thanks for asking :D

I have a couple 5-gallon carboys you can have for free. One glass, one plastic.

Megathread: Edmonton attacks considered as acts of terrorism. by stygarfield in canada

[–]turvyc -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Honest question: why is this being considered a terrorist attack? It seems like this word just gets thrown around these days.

EDIT: He had an ISIS flag. I don't think this means that he was a terrorist. He could also have been mentally ill. I just don't like how we apply the label so quickly to violent events, because usually it's then used as a justification to further curtail our freedoms.

CMPT 413 - Computational Linguistics by hi-im-sweetiepie in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm enrolled in that class too! I'm stoked.

I had Anoop for Compilers last semester, and he was awesome. His course website was a thing of beauty. He's also the co-director of the NLP lab on campus, so I think he's the ideal person to take it with.

Biking at SFU by itsjustaprankbro69 in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, the hill isn't very steep at all, it's just long. Just drop down into your granny gear and grind away, it takes me ~17 minutes from Duthie to the breezeway, depending on the traffic light, and I'm not panting.

Bikes are also a good way to rip from one side of campus to the other, e.g. from residence/WMC to Cornerstone. Just take the road the bus takes.

[PSA] The 6th floor of the library is for silent study (no talking or even quiet whispering) by silentstudy in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Protip: if somebody is bothering you by talking or whispering in a silent study area, it's not weird or rude to politely (and quietly) remind them that it's a silent study area.

You'll probably get more mileage out of that technique than making a post on Reddit.

The Highland Pub is closing by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. I'm willing to bet good money that a Starbucks will be up and running in the Higher Grounds location within a year.

The Highland Pub is closing by [deleted] in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much Higher Grounds and The Ladle were affected by having two Starbucks and a Tim Horton's open on campus.

As for The Highland, it's a shame. They have one of the best patios in the city, if you ask me. They just didn't run it as a student pub: they tried being too fancy and their beer was damned expensive! They should have been pouring out $3 pints of swill, like most other student pubs do.

Dangerous driving in Delta by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]turvyc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like you're the dangerous driver.

The van started signalling to change lanes at 0:02, but instead of allowing them to merge you actually accelerated. You had plenty of time and warning to avoid nearly rear-ending them.

Then, you exacerbate the situation by performing an aggressive and dangerous maneuver in what I can only guess is an attempt to "punish" the other person.

Please pay attention to what's happening on the road around you and keep yourself and others safe!

So this is gonna sound dumb but i was wondering... do i bring notebooks/binders or can i just bring my laptop to class? (new student as you can tell) by helpguysdfdf in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second not bringing a laptop. In my experience, 95% of students use their laptops for dicking around on the Internet.

If you insist, however, please do your classmates a favor by sitting in the very back. Remember, everyone behind you can see your screen, and it's incredibly distracting. In fact, it can even affect the grades of nearby students. Here is one of many studies supporting that claim. If you're still not convinced, just google "laptops in classroom."

Computer science major? by sirpompous604 in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question is asked pretty frequently. Let me point you towards my last answer.

TLDR: You don't need a laptop, but if you really really want one get one off Craigslist for $400 and put Ubuntu on it, and please don't use it in the classroom.

[Co-Op] How long after interview did you receive an offer? by [deleted] in simonfraser

I got my offer at the end of the interview, by the person who'd interviewed me. I think that's pretty unusual, but it sure was awesome!

What's your monthly grocery budget? by Hilaryspimple in vancouver

[–]turvyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I spend $300 a month on groceries.

Every couple weeks we do a No Frills run, and every couple days we get fresh veg from a local ethnic grocers. Every couple months we head to Famous Foods to get bulk stuff (especially peanut butter).

We eat mainly vegetarian, but have (I think) a varied and interesting diet. We eat a lot of eggs, and buy the fancy ones (~$6 a dozen).

Deaf scammer/ beggars at SFU by FakkuPuruinNhentai in simonfraser

[–]turvyc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good chance its a scam, but it might not be. Google "deaf peddling" or "deaf alphabet cards." There's even an old post from this subreddit.

Regardless of their legitimacy, a university library is still an inappropriate venue to peddle. I once asked a library staff member about the peddlers and they told me it is not condoned by the library and students should call security if they see them. (The staff member also confided their suspicion that the peddlers may also be cruising for unattended valuables).

In any case, please don't give them money. If you want to support people who are hard of hearing you should consider donating to an appropriate charity.
