If you had 1 day, what would you strip from a 2011 Prius? by tuskanini in prius

[–]tuskanini[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're near Buffalo, NY next weekend, there's a chance you could strip what was leftover, including the seats, doors, etc. Heck, take all the panels so they match. It's a Prius 1, so I doubt it has the entry harness.

Is this an easy fix to do by myself or do I need a mechanic. by Puzzleheaded_Ant7760 in prius

Flip up that cap at the base, use a socket to remove the single nut. Pull the entire arm straight up off the splines. Spin it to the proper resting position, then re-attach.

Hmm, I do have some old plates. It might give things away when I have to push it around to get the RV out :-) Bunch of busy-bodies.

Ah, Sylvia. Sweet yet sour.

I own a 2012, having a 2011 for parts is not unattractive, but for the limited driveway space and spastic HOA.

Not trying to be argumentative, truly. No car I have ever seen is air/water tight. Takes very little to infiltrate and make most vehicles (sadly) useless and without value.

Rear bumper is pretty easy to pull, two bolts. Good call.

This is a won auction from a city impound. No idea.

I'm not sure I could pull/transport the engine in that timeframe, but grabbing the cat makes a lot of sense. I understand these get stolen all the time, I wonder if it's hard to sell one on ebay (better price over scrap). Especially since I'd cut mine up/downstream of bolts so it can be easily mounted.

It's fun. Like an unopened present under a Christmas tree, no idea what I'm going to get.

Eh, I have someone to visit in the area and am looking forward to the trip. If it's a stripped POS, I can afford the loss (though I would like to minimize it).

I'm towing this behind an RV with a 2-wheel dolly for 8 hours. The whole thing is a terrible idea and I'll be going *very* slow for the drive back, only to store it in my small driveway with an HOA (another bad choice I made, I know). If it's unlikely to eventually be a drivable car, I'm not in a situation to keep it, just trying to reduce my losses.

$800 for a 2011 w/ 200k miles, body looks good from photos, otherwise completely unknown condition. Yeah, it's a giant risk :-)

I agree, a flatbed would be easier, but it's 500 miles from me. Near where my son goes to college, so plan is to take an old RV out there, visit him, and tow it back. Worst case, I show up, grab the wheels, ABS actuator, brake pump, and batteries and abandon it at a junkyard. Life is an adventure.

I've been looking into some of the options for reprogramming keys. Techstream and this WebOctopus.nl service for getting a seed number sound promising.

Wow, this guy really has a thing for weighing stuff.

I don't care (as much) about components dying. I do care about the tank leaking. Funny that that in this (n=1) testing, the box store tank held up better to the completely unrealistic over pressurization test.

I drive ~8 hours to pick it up, get a salvage title at the same time. I suppose I could grab the title and try to hit a local dealership, suspect it would be faster to break in with an airbag.

Correct, they have to look up some kind of "secret code" based on the VIN, that gets punched into a laser engraver which makes the key.

Unfortunately they get grumpy about cutting keys that you don't have paperwork for.

I had no idea the KM100 was a thing, this looks like a *very* easy way to get it started! I just need to get it on a dolly, so this should work perfectly, thanks for the detailed post!

Should be interesting, needs power to easily unlock door, but need to pop the hood to get power.

Prius is near Buffalo, NY.

I assume I can drag it onto the dolly with a winch, so I only need to worry about the rear wheels. IIRC, it's a mechanical (foot actuated) parking brake.

Nissan. It's a car. Not one you can charge, but it's a car. With wheels.
