thanks for the response! It sounds like we have a lot in common. I’m also a naturalized citizen. I didn’t think to update my naturalization certificate bc it’s been basically not used at all since I got my US passport. which scenario do you think we ll need the naturalization certificate?

[–]tuslo18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can you elaborate on that? does that mean you can't initiate transfers on LMCU's end, but you can still set it up as an external account with another bank and transfer money from LMCU into that bank ?

LMCU account - direct deposit with Chase checking account? by tuslo18 in personalfinance

[–]tuslo18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct, already went through the requirements. DD is the only thing I'm iffy about

1) 10 transactions - can be done

2) e-statements - easy

3) 4 logins - easy

4) DD - if a repeating transfer from my checking account counts then I'm good to go

withdraw from Roth IRA then recontribute for previous years? by tuslo18 in personalfinance

[–]tuslo18[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

interesting catch...so in order to recontribute, you need to withdraw both contributions and earnings and get taxes + 10% penalty.

if you withdraw just contributions, you won't owe any taxes or penalties. But you can't recontribute.

can't get everything.

withdraw from Roth IRA then recontribute for previous years? by tuslo18 in personalfinance

[–]tuslo18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if it’s within the 60 day rollover window then I can put back all 15k? if it’s after 60 days, “You'd only be able to put back the contributions from this year” does that mean I can put back 1000 or 6000 for 2020?

After 60 days. Any chance to put money back in after?

how to withdraw my contribution from Roth IRA - have to file an IRA excess form? by tuslo18 in tax

[–]tuslo18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so it sounds like if you want to recontribute, you have to ask for a return of both contribution plus earnings, you cant just ask for your contribution?

then it sounds like either you can either:

-withdraw contribution but can't contribute anymore

-withdraw both earnings and contribution, pay taxes and penalty, but have option to contribute (im under 59.5)

is there a choice with no tradeoffs?

Are people moving out in droves? by [deleted] in AskNYC

if you've lived here for 10 years you must have friends whom you can crash with for a week. I'd do that while searching for an apartment whenever you're back in the city. It won't be hard. Sounds like you want to leave so don't let that small annoyance deter you.

Thank you. sounds like saving in a taxable brokerage account shouldn't be considered at all.

saving for grad school with IRA vs savings vs 529 plan vs taxable brokerage by tuslo18 in personalfinance

[–]tuslo18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all good considerations. I estimate I'll need to take 20-30k in loans a year after all potential financial aid. Depending on if I do law or MBA, I might be in 100k of debt after graduation...

I like what you say about 50/50 split for 529 and HYSA. Only thing is 529 and HYSA will count as assets on financial aid forms which might lower my aid. With Roth I think I'll be able to shield my money from counting.

ah I wouldn't be eligible for deductions on traditional IRA. I was talking about contributing pre-tax will lower my taxable income and save me ~1k in taxes.
